California must be one of the most song-written places ever.
How about a Thursday choons thingy to salute the firefighers ?

Since 1880, average global temperatures have increased by about 1 degrees Celsius (1.7° degrees Fahrenheit). Global temperature is projected to warm by about 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7° degrees Fahrenheit) by 2050 and 2-4 degrees Celsius (3.6-7.2 degrees Fahrenheit) by 2100.

Those bloody medieval bastards in their 4x4’s, using paraffin heaters to keep the old thatched cottages warm whilst jetting off to Ye Olde EyeBeefah for a well earned break with all the other Serfs and Landowners alike

Climate change is a fact
Mother Earth will change and there is not a God fearing thing anyone can do to stop her. Fact.
In just the last 80 or so years we’ve had Hiroshima and Nagasaki, countless smaller and larger nuke tests, Chernobyl and others alongside volcanoes, tsunamis and other natural earth changing events but still Mother Earth turns.
Yet millions and millions of lemmings follow this modern day witchcraft cult that we’re going to kill everything if we turn the boiler on, drive a car or don’t subscribe to Nutty Millibands new green army. Let’s not even consider what we spat up into the atmosphere over the industrial revolution which was minuscule compared to CO2 and sulphur emitted over Jurassic times; and compare that to how clean a lot of industries are now.
If you believe you can do your bit to change the earths temperature then knock yourself out, fair kin play to you. But is it right that you can force your views onto others and belittle those with a different opinion; are you so convinced what you’re being told is right????

I’d sooner concentrate on reduction of waste and rubbish.
What we are doing to our rivers, seas and natural land areas across the globe is disgraceful. Yes I’d agree the fossil industries are also at fault here and their contamination of areas needs further improvement absolutely.

Enough of my waffle… I’m off to stick my fingers in my ears (and this wasn’t really a thread to take down this rabbit hole…. My apologies)

Spot on.

Maybe our LA friends can advise but I guess this must be down to cutbacks and mismanagement?

As others have said, the climate situation is a known issue so how have this been allowed to be so bad? Or have we hit a tipping point where we just can’t cope?

The "perfect storm" phrase is getting used. We've had .2 inches of rain this season. Essentially, no rain for about half a year. The place is a tinder box.

The winds were incredible, gusts 60 - 90 mph. Once the fire started I'm not sure there was a way it could be controlled.

However, investigations into mismanagement and arson are starting. Reportedly the fire teams were trying to use hydrants that had no water pressure and a reservoir was "offline" and couldn't be used. LAs mayor is looking at a recall. Phone and electric lines managed by utilities are also going to be scrutinized. I wouldn't be surprised if some sicko kicked off at least some of the fires and that is being investigated.

I'm not going to dive into climate change, but if a little Los Angeles history helps, the first nations people in this area, the Kizh, practiced controlled fires over 500 years ago to stimulate plant growth and control fuel sources for potential natural fires. The first Spanish explorers here noted the smoke from local fires. The upshot is that fires, and trying to control them, have always been part of life in the region.

Save your breath. The far left will simply dismiss any info that doesn't fit their narrative.

Interesting on the history and thanks for that as I wasn’t aware
Sounds much the same as parts of Greece, Brazil etc

Not wishing to go all Jungle Book but I’ve understood the crassness of humans who think they can control fire.

The single most important thing out of all this is the very best of luck to you and your fellow Angleians no matter their standing, status, wealth or roles in life.

Actual science has shown how humans are changing the earth and has done so for many decades. Yet you claim to know better. What qualifies you to assert that?

Lblock, it's impossible to discuss this properly on a MB. If you'd like to take it elsewhere online so we could actually talk with each other, I'd be happy to do so. Send me a PM if you'd like to do that.

This bloke - an LA resident - says there are far more prosaic reasons for the devastating fires than climate change.

Make your own mind up, but he makes a compelling case. (Warning: some people may be offended by the appearance of Mr Trump in this video).

History

Just to say:
- Research into climate change and global warming takes into account the impact of natural variations, like volcanic activity, what the sun is doing etc. It takes those things into account. This is critically important to understand. Also, the earth is a connected system so climate is about the global picture and global temperatures. At times, regions will appear to be moving in different directions, like when the UK experienced the medieval warm period.

- People who care about the environment are not just on the far left. As examples, Thatcher was the first politician to make a major speech about global warming and I have recently seen a Tory grandee implore people to act to fix the climate in a major article in the Daily Mail.

These are general points, they're not aimed specifically at you, LBlock

"Things had started becoming increasingly desperate at Loftus Road but QPR have been handed a massive lifeline and the place has absolutely erupted. it's carnage. It's bedlam. It's 1-1."

Sometimes it appears that we're reaching a period when our senses and our minds will no longer respond to moderate stimulation.'
@spiro Agnew 1970.

I think i reached that point in the Danny Rampling goa trance tent at creamfields 1999.

I was watching 'the masked singer ' a week ago at home with Jo on ITV a week ago or so.. I was sober...I thought is this it??. Is this the Parameter of the 5 known senses?

Saturday night with a load of minor celeb FGM off cut w ankers singing 'walking in memphis ' dressed as a pepper pot ??

But No!.. people drawing ley lines between Trump and wild Burning fires laying waste to all life on this thread convinces me that life must go on.

Classic LFW.

I initially read that as the "Danny Rampling goat race tent" which sounds much more fun.

Fair play to the emergency services there . Fighting fires fanned by 100 MPH winds can’t be fun .
They never get enough credit .

Had an email from Discogs last night saying anyone buying from, or selling to, folk in the LA area may experience delays.
Talk about the bleedin' obvious !

I'm not going to contest the water and forest management points but the fact does remain that the area is unseasonably dry due to lack of rain. From my earlier post, sourced from the L A Times:

"It’s safe to say this is [one of] the top ten driest starts to our rainy season on record,” said Ryan Kittell, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Oxnard. “Basically, all the plants are as dry as they normally are in October.”

California’s wet season can run from October to April, although most of the precipitation occurs from December to February".

Cant believe how much 'air time' the BBC news give to it!!!!! Who really cares??

Me cuz I live here, 20 mins south of Palisades fire.
It’s pretty nuts out here right now.
All this finger pointing is out of order.
South and South East get hurricanes, others get tornados others blizzards.
We get fires and quakes and mudslides. It’s expected.
This one was twinned with high winds and areas that hadn’t burnt in a long time.
Sure improvements can and will be made but politicizing it just leads to the greater divide of this nation which is such a shame to see.

Climate change denial isn't a political issue, it's a hard of thinking issue. There is literally no point in engaging with people who think it is 'a far left thing'.

Let's keep buying and importing those solar panels, electric car batteries and wind turbines from countries that use coal factories to produce them! At the same time, let's increase our "carbon footprint" for these "green energy" solutions to be transported thousand of miles to our little island. Net zero is a con, it'll make us all poorer whilst having no impact whatsoever on saving the planet whilst the likes of China and India keep using coal. We are a laughing stock.
