Oldham grooming gangs: Government blocks national inquiry 05:53 - Jan 3 with 6055 viewsAnotherJohn

Jess Phillips has rejected a request from Oldham Council for a Home-Office-led national inquiry into historic child exploitation in Oldham. It seems that Government prefers to frame this as a local issue, and is insisting that it is for the Council to decide on any future action. The Tories, Reform, Maggie Oliver and even Elon Musk, are wading in to excoriate Starmer. One allegation is that his leadership of the CPS may have been part of the problem. Some suggest there is a continuing establishment cover-up to avoid further inflaming racial tensions.

For some reason a few people want to shine the torch away from Asian grooming gangs.

For me it’s just a case of making sure the light shines on other similarly abhorrent issues.

It’s quite right at this time it’s these gangs are front and centre.

Doesn’t mean that overall anyone else should get a free pass.

When people raise the issue of ' identifying those in authority who turned a blind eye' I think we can expect some diversion.

I can’t see the figures in that.

Here’s what I saw (with the big caveat that I haven’t looked at the original source)

Again, I find what’s happened with the gangs to be possibly the worst thing I’ve ever read about.

Doesn’t mean we should ignore other ethnicities.

There is this report of a recent study based on FoI requests about arrests stats.

https://www.msn.com/en-gb/travel/news/migrants-3-times-more-likely-to-be-arreste

I don't know how valid these findings are as many will say they come from a group that campaigns to lower immigration, and there seems to be a glitch in downloading the full report.

https://centreformigrationcontrol.com/migrants-disproportionately-behind-country

I'm assuming this is the same report, but there may be a recent update focusing down on sexual offences.

Since being released from prison, the men have fought a long legal battle against deportation, mounting multiple legal challenges and appeals over several years.

During the tribunal hearing in London on Monday it emerged that Aziz had been told he would not be stripped of his UK citizenship and deported.

Aziz had renounced his Pakistani citizenship in July 2018, just days before the Court of Appeal ruled he could be deprived of his UK citizenship.

Human rights laws at it's best.

Its an utter disgrace when you set it our as clearly as that.

They should be deported and if they appeal then they should stay deported whilst it is heard.
Only if the appeal is successful should they be considered to be allowed back in.

Currently it appears not to offer justice - and indeed places other citizens at risk. What about their rights ?

Every professional who turned a blind eye should face jail.
I think thats the only way to ensure it does not happen again.
Its hard to believe the scale of all this.

OHL - you would think local Plod would notice these young girls with these older men on a very regular basis. I am amazed that they would have that doing nothing was appropriate. Its just not sensible at the most basic level.

Politicians …. You just got to love them. Jenrick, who’s not been short of offering his opinion being asked some searching questions. I’d have thought if you’d done nowt on an important issue and the brown stuff was hitting the fan, you’d keep your head down and say nothing.

He was a minister of state and runner up in the Conservative leadership campaign.

In my opinion, we need a much higher calibre of politician that we’ve got.

I tried to find the table Gwyn posted from the Ministry of Justice website and haven't yet succeeded because the information seems quite hard to locate from the various documents available. No doubt it is there somewhere. The latest 2024 stats relate to what was happening in 2022. However, as the stats may relate to different stages such as recorded offences, arrests, cases that proceed, convictions and sentencing, figures from just one stage could be misleading. It would be helpful to have more accessible stats.

I did find these pages:

Absolutely. We saw the Hillsborough and postmaster inquiries kicked down the road for decades. Now they are doing the same here. But when they want to limit the freedom of the press or find out whether Boris had a party or not these inquiries are rushed through.

The grooming gangs thing is not a local issue. It’s a national scandal.

There was one that published in 2022. It wasn't specifically on grooming gangs but did include them aswell as care homes, the Church and other settings. The root cause is the same people in a position of power taking advantage of vulnerable children / young people. The recommendations from that haven't been enacted yet.

I'm not saying we shouldn't have another but what will it really achieve?

I suppose the argument is that a new inquiry would:

Investigate one area ("grooming gangs") in detail rather than spread attention across the 15 investigations covered by the 2022 inquiry.
Draw the findings of the various local inquiries (in I think 5 towns) together, consider the much larger number of towns alleged to have been affected, and offer a national perspective on the problem.
Allow investigation of certain sensitive issues concerning "community relations" that were kept at the margins in the 2022 inquiry.
Look in more detail at the parts played by high-level police officers, social workers. schools, residential homes, the CPS, civil servants and politicians, including forcing them to provide evidence.
Consider whether the perpetrators have received appropriate sanctions.

I'm still undecided myself whether a focused public inquiry or an entirely new, more action- oriented intervention is needed. Listening to Starmer in Parliament today, I got the sense of a government that wants to draw a line under this through limited reforms, like mandatory reporting, which are all well and good but leave an awful lot of loose ends as well as culpable people unpunished.

Yes - without any individuals being personally accountable it will look weak.
Grenfell same.
Savile at the BBC same.

Nobody seems to be accountable meanwhile victims wait.
And new victims are created.

Cant they take the recommended actions now - and start a new national inquiry now.

The people at the top all protect each other, it's all corrupt. Police in some areas were told what was happening, reports were made, parents voiced concerns and still nothing was done.

It's not a local thing and it needs a national answer but the people at the top are reluctant to be called racists.

Yep.

What we all seem to want is accountability, the recommendations from the 2022 inquiry actioned and a focussed investigation into the failings of this particular issue. And fast.

The question is whether a national inquiry will achieve this.

They're fair points, but the grooming gangs abuse constitutes relatively few victims in localised areas. I don't think a national inquiry focusing on that will get the results people think, especially when those results are already known.

If you consider the other areas the 2022 inquiry covered including schools, children in care and abuse in religious organisations the victims are far more numerous, come from all walks of life and could be anywhere in the UK. Surely any one of those would be more worthy of a full national inquiry?

If any source of abuse is worth an inquiry then internet grooming is that. If Elon Musk could put his dog whistle down for a bit and actually wanted to protect children he could make a real difference in that area.

So you’re saying we ignore grooming gang child abuse because it only constitutes approx 3.7% of total child abuse? Well that’s a great message to the abusers.

Heard that figure quoted by a Sky journalist the other night.
