Oldham grooming gangs: Government blocks national inquiry 05:53 - Jan 3 with 17534 viewsAnotherJohn

Jess Phillips has rejected a request from Oldham Council for a Home-Office-led national inquiry into historic child exploitation in Oldham. It seems that Government prefers to frame this as a local issue, and is insisting that it is for the Council to decide on any future action. The Tories, Reform, Maggie Oliver and even Elon Musk, are wading in to excoriate Starmer. One allegation is that his leadership of the CPS may have been part of the problem. Some suggest there is a continuing establishment cover-up to avoid further inflaming racial tensions.

But to ask a question you don't need to be overly prescreptive and unless the victim knew Darren Miller was going to ask that particular question and state what had hapened to her he was being disrespectful and disclosing personal information.

That's what he was being pulled up on.

It could have inflamed / incited discrimination - we have seen it in this thread. The Tories would be well advised to let this go as they have no moral high ground to take, but that isn't what they are trying to do. They are trying to take votes from Reform by using abused children.

Ultimately this wasn't a debate, it wasn't a motion raised by an Assembly Member. It was a deliberately misused slot at FMQ's. It's possible Darren Millar knew what would happen and he knew the rules. He knew he'd be stopped by going on this rant and that is possibly exactly the hornets nest he wanted to kick.

This entire episode is shameful to British politics.

It is on the inflamed/ incited discrimination issue that you and some others of us differ. This has come up in several points in this thread. You contend that the call for an inquiry is at base motivated by racism, involves throwing one's lot in with the far right, and will harm community relations. In other words it will inflame tensions. Those who side with me say this is precisely the mindset that allowed the rape gangs to damage so many young girls; that it was reluctance to be seen as a racist with an agenda that led so many to avert their eyes. Just this morning on BBC Radio 4, Nick Robinson said to Lisa Nandy that several journalist colleagues had told him that the police had warned them not to print details of ethnicity re the gangs because it would inflame community tensions. That way of thinking is a huge part of the problem, and Elin Jones still hasn't grasped that lesson. I don't think I am going to convince you on this so I will leave it at that, but that is where a key line of difference in opinions lies.

I think it’s clear that the instructional reluctance to speak properly around race has been a huge issue and it’s right that it’s highlighted and there is change.

My issue (and others on this thread) is that we mustn’t get so far focused on race aspect of child abuse, that other concerns get relegated.

Here’s a horrific story from yesterday:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c9w5rkzxjl4o

Not a peep on here and that’s a bit of a theme. Threads where a perpetrator is white British are few and far between.

Pointing out that vast majority of offences are carried out by this group isn’t being and apologist for the heinous crimes carried out by the gangs.

I don't see a problem with getting to the truth, how many people in authority have been prosecuted for turning a blind eye to these gangs?
This was allowed to go on because people were 'afraid of community tensions 'now we can't get to the truth because of 'potential community tensions'. Let's just cover the whole thing up and let criminals and corrupt figures in authority get away with it.

It seems that Sir Sadiq Khan only responds when questions about gangs are more rather than less descriptive.

I don't think that's where we differ.

The concerns around various community sensitivities must not happen. Any perpetrator of child abuse must be brought to account, but I'd suggest it's an incredibly difficult thing to prove and there's an element of reluctance in offending people in all cases whether they are catholic priests, teachers or Pakistani Muslims.

The call for an inquiry is based in racism. Let's be honest it was jumped on by Elon Musk the racist Reform and "Tommy Robinson" billionaire and subsequently by Kemi Badenoch and then went viral. Despite her political party refusing exactly the same thing just months previously and doing nothing to implement recommendations of previous inquiries. It happened to try and gain right wing votes. We've subsequently seen child rape be referred to as a Muslim practice in this thread.

Despite it occurring in localised areas with considerably fewer victims than other forms of abuse. I don't think a full inquiry would give much bang for the buck.

Then we had Darren Millar inflaming / inciting the situation. It's different. He abused the rules of FMQ's knowing exactly the reaction he'd get from the right wing social media goons. He knew what he was doing. It was disgusting behaviour deliberately designed to attract reform voters and get social media likes. Another dog whistle.

People don't understand how he should have behaved so jump on the "censoring" bandwagon. He wasn't censored, he was called to the order he should have respected.

Trying to get her to say something that he could latch onto. She should have called his bluff and asked him what he wanted her to say. When he pulled out the prepared answer she should have called him on playing politics.

Maybe the lack of outrage that should take place due to the story in your link is suppressed or ignored by many media outlets, you're right we shouldn't ignore types of crimes like these and regardless of colour or race it should be treated with equal outrage. I don't think anyone on here is in anyway racist just joining in the public outcry.

Some welcome, if belated, action. However, the fact that two of the three sentenced offenders managed to flee the country and escape prison as the case proceeded, hardly indicates a well-oiled justice system. The system seems to have been notably more effective in jailing the far-right internet offender mentioned in Gwyn's link. That low-life fully deserves what he got, but I'd say he has been rather less productive in terms of number of victims suffering severe harm compared with the rape gang offenders.

Have the courage of your convictions and call me out , by the way being dismissive of someone following a a religion isn't racist nor being phobic as I have no fear of any religion , it seems you're too cowardly to face up to life's reality's nor to say what you truly believe.

What do they pray for at the mosque exactly. Peace ,reconsiliation, love for neighbour ,respect for the religion of others ?
God seems not to want to listen

Mosques are a meeting place in the same way that the welsh chapels were where they were. Focal point to discuss views and what is going on locally . For anyone to suggest the worshipers did not know what their THEIR menfolk were up to is crazy

I’ve said before and will repeat ,racist allegations often come from people living well away from the issues multi ethnic communities bringing.

Finally, everyone prefers their own . Fact.

What do they prey for at a mosque? Ask a Muslim, find out.

I can tell you for certain it's not to be able to rape children.
