Role of Fullbacks. 09:28 - Apr 9 with 3916 viewsRichardO

Given Tymon, Key,Lowe, Placeta and Ronald are some our best assets are they being used effectively in attack and defence, given our midfield is dropping deep. we seem now stuck trying to use the flanks which are effectively being stifled?
We seem to have gone to two at the back not four, and yet again our midfield is dropping too often too deep leaving us, one, unable to win the ball in the midfield, two, limited in our ability to swap play across the pitch in midfield, three, unable to press opposition to stop their progression up the pitch, and four, unable to get on the front foot in games.
If the full backs drop deep then the midfield can push on to link play in the middle of the park and then one full back at a time can then move forward to support the forward play and the other can drop to ensure the much needed defensive cover.

The role of the modern full back involves getting forward as much as possible to assist attacking options. This is not the 1970,s.

Key and Tymon perform the role well albeit both could be more consistent. You were suggesting that our full back was causing problems by getting forward which quite clearly wasn’t the case.

Keys goal tonight underlined the importance of getting full backs high up the pitch. His run wasn’t tracked by Stoke either.

Anyway very good win tonight. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

I said they were stifling the wingers by being too close, closing the gaps that would have allow us to play through instead of making areas of the pitch namely the flanks dead ends, making the progress slow and ponderous allowing defences to get in shapes to defend those flanks, the very first ball played by Cabango illustrated it perfectly Key had push up to far so making the pass impossible, Cabango had obviously been asked to get the ball out wide quicker but the position of the Stoke player in relation to Key made it impossible, Key should have offered himself from a better position that would meant him coming deeper.
Today we changed to points of attack which freed up space in other areas of the pitch we actually created very few overlapping scenarios today.
Still think we saw players running with the ball too long instead of getting the pass away, Key got caught on one of his drives forward so did Darling, both when better options had presented themselves.
We changed the way we attacked today, it actually highlighted the importance of getting players beyond opposition defenders turning them making our play hard to defend against, the job of all the players not just full backs

As for going back to the 70s there were plenty of forward thinking full backs then maybe not helped by poor pitches but some times people really do think they are reinventing the wheel, football is football, yes the analysis of play, formations change and then change again, rules changed?but in essence I think you will find it is eleven player against eleven player and how you can get the upper hand over your opponent regardless of the nature of the modern game whatever that means.

Newsflash mate, back in the 70's full backs got forward and put in crosses and even got amongst the goals. Wyndham Evans made 389 appearnaces for us and got 20 goals.

It's not a modern concept. Have you ever heard of Nilton Santos, 1958 World cup winner? Described as the first attacking full back.

Very well put. To some people it's like football didn't exist or must have been very poor before they were born, it can only be good if it's modern. If its from the 70's, well, it must be boring,

Joao Moreira was better at attacking than defending!
