Some Swans are Beautiful 11:45 - Apr 17 with 1915 viewsswan65split

Was at the hospital A@E for over 21 hours this weekend , yesterday afternoon, I ventured back to the car for a phone charger, as I reached the exit, there was a beautiful dark haired young woman, beautiful smile.

Oh its raining I said. it was lovely yesterday.............how long have you been here she asked, I told her , and she offered to buy me a coffee, I wasn't begging honest.

I noticed she was wearing a swans top, and we talked a short while, she was originally from Dorset and she had MS.
A beautiful smile
a beautiful woman
a beautiful personality
a beautiful caring soul

If anyone knows her, she made a tired weary old man very happy .

Nah its not thankfully, but it may have been , with the issues she has,

Sad part to see the line of 15 ambulances, cant blame the staff/docs, they were run off their feet and all happy to help etc, sadly we are seeing the chaos grow, unless those running the Country get their fingers out of their xxxxxxxxx.

My mother had a TIA a couple of weeks back. Ambulance called, told it couid be up to 4 hours but thankfully arrived within the hour.

Arrived at 18-30 ish and she got out of that ambulance at 10-00 the next day. Fantastic ambulance staff and no hardship in being in the ambulance for her but it tied that vehicle up because of no bed space in A&E.

When she was released from the vehicle we then spent 3 hours waiting in the A&E area for the medication to come from the pharmacy.

Have no doubts, the system is broken and if there is an NHS in 20 years or so I’ll be very surprised.

Edit: sorry to hijack this post with my gripe!

No problem with the gripe at all, I fully agree, system needs input/money, etc and 1st thing a complete overhaul, the 111 thing is a farce never had any solution from it at all, and talking to others there yesterday they were of the same opinion, and all said they'd never use it again, maybe that's why A@E is being flooded.

111 usually tells you to go to A&E anyway. The nurse had a go at me once and when I said "but 111 sent me" she said they're crap and still gave me grief.

My wife and several friends work there and they do their best but yes, it is broken.

Here shouldn't be a Tawe ward the way it's set up, it should be a proper ward, not a shoehorned in, out of the way thing with little space.

The reasons it’s flooded are many including most people there not coming under the banner of an accident nor an emergency. Why are they there? It seems the problem starts with the GP service we now receive. This has bewilderingly gone down hill since Covid, before that I could get an appointment relatively easy. Now you have to get a call back from a GO who will then decide if he / she needs to see you. If you don’t get in early enough, all the slots go.

Also, there are people who really like the day out in A&E. They have tea, snacks, warmth and just while away the hours on their phones. It happened when I was there last year. Young girl sitting knees up munching crisps. Called to Triage and she leapt up and saw the nurse. Came out, went back to her seat and continued eating with a cup of tea. The waiting time was around 8 hours! I’m not saying there was nothing wrong with her but she certainly was not an A or an E.

And additionally, the number of people in the NHS is below the number needed. I don’t know if they would recruit more but it’s a fact now that there is little or no incentive to work for the NHS. Doctors can leave the UK and go to Australia for more money. And guess what, that’s just what they are doing. Nurses are not paid enough to keep current levels or to recruit in future. All this costs money of course and I’m not sure if it will ever be given the level of funding needed again.

So if, and it’s a big if, nurses and doctors get the pay rise they are looking for, would the capacity be increased or would the budget be wiped out and even less staff employed.

It’s one hell of a problem but I would say that most people would be prepared to pay an extra 1% at basic level and possibly more at higher rates if income tax if they were promised that additional revenue would be ringfenced for NHS enhancement.

I agree with Para 1

Para 2 , they only gave us 1 cup of tea in that time, no food, that was down to us to get. may not look like theres anything wrong ith someone, but they may have issues not visible taht can only be checked at hospital, if as you say Para 1 is "unavailable"

Para 3 extra money in pay is needed plus staff/ nurses. docs , beds the lot. that's the input I was referring to.

yep a cple of quid more, and maybe those higher up the ladder deciding our lives paying their fair share in this country.

They were buying tea from the machine so an endless supply almost. This was in the waiting area.

I still maintain that A&E should be just that. I agree people have problems not necessarily visible but if you are leaping to your feet, munching junk food then no way are you an A or an E. They need to persist in seeing the GP not clogging up the system. GPs can diagnose and make referrals to specialists which by-pass A&E.

It’s a mess without doubt and should be the priority with any government.

yep your 2nd paragraph was talked about, in my younger days, you were able to call a doctor out at 10pm, and theyd be there at some time after that, and yes probably administer something to get you by till going to the surgery ASAP etc.

now if you get through to the surgery 5 minutes after the phones are open they're full!
the car park that was usually full of patients cars now appears full of staff cars.

When I was a kid i has the doctor visit me in the middle of the night if I was ill - I contracted mumps and measles when very young and he came and diagnosed.

GPs don’t know they’re born now. Not the vocation or calling it once was for sure.

Adding to my woes, my dental surgery who I’ve been with for many years has now stopped being an NHS dentist. It’s unlikely I’ll find another one so I’m going to have to take out a dental plan I suppose and go private. This is the way GPs will go in the future.
