I've occasionally mentioned that a chap who works with me is originally from Streatham. I was singing this song on a job about 20 years ago and changed the word Tulsa to Tulse Hill. He fcking took it hook, line and sinker. Still laugh about it today.

We were discussing him a few weeks ago on the melancholy songs thread:

Songs that make you all flipping melancholy by TacticalR 7 Jan 2023 13:30
Yes dmm, we could probably do a whole thread on Bacharach and David's mixture of pop, easy listening, optimism, sadness and heartbreak...

LA is a great big freeway
Put a hundred down and buy a car
In a week, maybe two, they'll make you a star
Weeks turn into years, how quick they pass
And all the stars that never were
Are parking cars and pumping gas

Do You Know the Way to San Jose?

What an amazing songwriter. Always loved this later effort with Elvis C too -

"a diseased bunch of mofos if there ever was one, their beauty is so awesome that listening to them at their best is like being in some vast dream cathedral decorated with a thousand gleaming American pop culture icons." - Lester Bangs on The Beach Boys

There you go, TacticalR, we're doing it. His songs will always invoke strong nostalgic feelings in me.

You can wax lyrical about the partnerships of Lennon and McCartney, Taupin and John, even Rodgers and Hammerstein. But for my money Bacharach and David win hands down. Thier music was ever present, from the time I was a snotty nosed little dork in the 60's it was coming out of the kitchen radio. In the 90's when I had my own little horrors running around the house, it was still there. The 'best of' CD still gets pull out every few months. God bless you Burt and simply, thank you.

Have been very fortunate to Burt Bacharach at the Festival Hall and John Barry at Albert Hall conducting full orchestras of their life in music - both utterly joyous. Do not make them like that any more.

Wrote some absolute belters - Close to You, Say a Little Prayer, Raindrops keep falling on my head to name just a few. Thanks for the soundtrack to my kitchen/bathroom. RIP.
