Hi all

I’ve taken the decision to ban Controversial Jack and deleted the thread.

This was my decision, I tried to keep the debate up for as long as possible but it got increasingly bizarre and for the good of the site, I removed it.

My decision, any criticism is on me not Keith.

That will come as a shock to the Russians. If it’s a truck bomb traffic it will be a major concern to Putin because HGV’s using the bridge are subject to X-ray type checks before being allowed to cross. One section of the road has collapsed but the second is still standing, there are fuel tankers on fire on the train line so we don’t know if it’s been rendered completely unusable.

If the Ukrainians have rendered it completely unusable it will be hammer blow to the Russians in Kherson (especially those North of the Dnieper) as their supply lines will be severely affected. If the Ukrainians recapture the big dam on the Dnieper they’ll also be able to turn off the drinking water supply to Crimea.

I expect a ferocious response from Russia.

It's the response that worries me.

It's clear Putin has lost this war. He doesn't seem to have a way out of this situation, that's a big concern.

And his reaction will be of concern to people around him. He’ll be taken out way before it gets to that stage.

Is the option of his replacement , being a worse hardliner , hellbent and ready to see the USSR as it was back in the Cold War era and eradicate NATO .

The card being played by Russia is the nukes , place your bets now please .

I see the Belarus president has given Putin a 70th birthday present to help with the war efforts. A brand new tractor, the Russians won't be able to retreat so fast in it.

I can’t see it being a truck bomb. There seems to be a few near simultaneous explosions.

Just musing but the truck (presumably full of Russian army munitions) exploded as it hit the increase grade slope on the bridge crossing going from gentle grade to a steep slope.

a) It could therefore have been triggered by a "mercury tilt switch" the type that triggered the explosion that killed Airey Neave in 1979.

b) It could have been planted by an inside Russian objector recently called up or one of thousands of Russians furious with Putin. Perhaps an Ukrainian hit squad bribing guards etc.

The tilt of the vehicle could have mobilised volatile liquids to coming into contact with explosive substances by accident. Broken containers etc sloppy packaging.

How do Russians transfer high explosives? Is it done properly. Are substances that react in combination kept apart?

I believe it was a truck bomb intentional with a mercury tilt switch or an accident. I believe the slope and the angle of the truck was a factor and a trigger to the explosion.

Airey Neave's car exploded as it descended to an underground car park on a slope.

I think SirJohnalot made the right decision, even though it is difficult to know exactly where to draw the line. While searching on the web for the latest news from Ukraine I've been dismayed to see the pro-Russian trolls going into overdrive with increasingly implausible claims. Apart from those in the RF troll factories, many seem to come from the political extremes, both left and right, with a good sprinkling of COVID conspiracy theorists thrown in. Strange bed-fellows indeed! I wonder if the RF would tolerate such diversity of political perspectives.

I dont think it's a truck bomb - Russia claimed it was but I doubt it.

As for a truck bomb with a mercury tilt switch on a truck that would have travelled through actual Russian territory rather than annexed region... a GPS initiator would be the one of choice as everything about the attack was deliberately timed to coincide with the regular rail tanker stop on the bridge.

Unlikely to be a truck bomb, especially as it took down sections rather than blew a hole. It is more efficient to attack from below.

Edit to correct myself. After seeing a satellite photo I now know that it was a view of the approach to the elevated section. Additionally three road sections are shown to be down in the satellite photo

And for those enthusiasts of the truck bomb theory apparently a retired Finnish forces guy also says truck bomb.

Russia has imposed martial law in the areas they have annexed. It is an admission it cannot control these areas which is surprising as according to Russia 97% of the population wanted to be Russian. Gives the Russians a reason to shoot anybody they dislike not that they need one.

The Russians are also evacuating all Russian appointed quisling officials in Kherson. Another admission that Russia can't defend the city.

Kherson will be the next to fall back into Ukrainian control , its seems Putin's scorched earth policy is confusing even for him as he's destroying the infrastructure of the land he believes belongs to Russia.
