Hornets on Sunday 19:31 - Feb 24 with 299548 viewsEllDale

They’re tweeting that their “matchday operations” are being restricted for the home game against Barrow on Sunday for reasons that they don’t want to divulge at the moment.
The bottom line is that the crowd capacity is limited to 920 and there will be no cash admissions on the day.
Wonder what that’s all about?

From the Hornets board:

"It is so sad that the relationship between Hornets and the football club has deteriorated so badly. There have been many fallout over the last 30 years or so over many issues, without knowing all the facts of these times, it appeared Hornets were the problem with issues over rent Stadium costs etc. Chris Dunphy a Chairman sympathetic to the Hornets cause offered terms of an agreement that suited both clubs. Now Rochdale have a Chairman who wants them out, which is a shame because the work of the Rochdale Hornets Foundation has been exemplary, in developing Ladies and Wheelchair Rugby teams as well as work in schools. Obviously he cannot just bin Hornets as there is a contract in place, so the next best thing is to make life difficult for people working for Hornets. After 30 years Rochdale Football Club suddenly need extra office space, so the Hornets offices and club shop have been summoned by Mr Gauge for his expanding club and Hornets are demoted to a sponsors box, which if course can't be used on match days of either club.

It really is a pathetic way of conducting business and shows Mr Gauge has not got the bottle to tell Hornets that despite Mr Dunphys contract, they are no longer welcome. Probably because he is Chairman of a club that has regularly promoted Football in the Rochdale Community, over as many years as I can remember. Hornets since the arrival of Andy Mazey have progressed greatly in that type of work. So Mr Gauge let's hear your explanation of why would you want to spoil that progress which like your own club's activities benefits the people of Rochdale, if it in the end turns out to be an issue of Hornets not paying their way, or renaging on the terms of the current contract, then that should be made public, if as appears they are merely an inconvenience to your club then that it a very sad endorsement for you as a Chairman.Your predecessors have managed to sort out issues with Hornets sadly you cant."

That to me sounds like Dale can make more money from expanded offices etc (the new entrance decor looks smart) than they do from Hornets... if the terms of the lease that Hornets signed don't include a designated office / shop space, guaranteed capacity numbers etc, then I'd suggest that is an issue for whoever signed the lease rather than the people enforcing the lease. I think I mentioned elsewhere that essentially Dale provide a service and Hornets are the customers... we are within our right to maybe ask for additional payments for additional space / services, in the same way that Hornets as the customer have the right not to 'purchase' the space / service from us.

I admire a lot of the work Hornets are doing in the town and with wheelchair / ladies teams, but the attitude of certain posters here coupled with my suspicions of, and actions by, their chairman, make
me even less likely to want to engage with them.

Rochdale Hornets signed a lease in 2016.

Quotes from the time:

"Rochdale Hornets RLFC are delighted with the news that Rochdale AFC has assumed control of Spotland Stadium," said Mark Wynn, chairman of the Kingstone Press League 1 club.

"We pay tribute to the vision of the Dale board in securing the future of the town's two professional teams in the stadium."

Rugby Football League chief executive Nigel Wood said: "We have been happy to support Rochdale Hornets' request to achieve considerably better terms to play at Spotland which will hopefully give the club every chance to both flourish and prosper at the stadium."

When the Rugby Football League chief executive of the time calls it "better terms" and the Hornets Chairman of the time said "Rochdale Hornets RLFC are delighted with the news", you really have to wonder what the real motivation is.

I’m fairly certain the author of that post also posts on here as one of those who claims to also be a Dale fan and used to watch us in the 60’s/70’s blah, blah, blah.

As is usually the case with their sort, when it comes down to it they only look at it from the rugger club’s POV and show their true colours.

Several members of Dale's backroom staff already use sponsors boxes as their "offices" and have done for many years. Those boxes are then turned over to sponsors on matchdays, with all equipment being locked away.

How many Hornets staff would need access to their "office" during a Dale game or a Hornets game? Maybe they should try to get themselves organised like the Dale staff who use boxes as their "offices" do.

I've always been against all forms of rugby and every time I read something from that lot, it just confirms why.

When I was your age, I used to enjoy the odd game of tennis. Or was it golf?

Not sure who you mean by ‘that lot’.

We should remember that the Morrisons money was important in seeing two struggling clubs survive.

It seems to be a simple case of terms of lease. If the facilities that have apparently been withdrawn from hornets us are covered by the lease then presumably Dale have a case to answer. If they are not, and have simply been ‘gifted’ to Hornets outside the terms of the lease then Hornets need to pony up funds for these as Dale look to make use of their assests in the best interests of the football club.

I am not against any form of rugby….I am against professional sports organisations who dont pay their way and expect to exist on charity.

"That lot" = Hornets and their people/fans.

The 1988 argument has been done to death now. The deal also saved Hornets.

I agree with your last point, but the way this has gone will come as no surprise to anyone who has had dealings with "that lot" down the years.

Stop applying common sense, logic and reason pioneer, its all the football club's fault don't you know!

As the chief executive of the governing body said in 2016:
"We have been happy to support Rochdale Hornets' request to achieve considerably better terms to play at Spotland which will hopefully give the club every chance to both flourish and prosper at the stadium."

When your governing body's CEO says that they were pleased to "support the Rochdale Hornets' request" you know that they mustn't have a leg to stand on.

"Rochdale Hornet's request" - the Board of Hornets at the time made a request to enter into a new lease.

Noting that this was 4 years BEFORE the Mazey 2020 Hornets but it reads like "The lady doth protest too much, methinks"

'The Hornet' is active again.

I mentioned earlier in the thread that people often give themselves away with their writing style.

Hornet, Rochdale Glory & our mate Andy have an uncannily similar style... even if you don't want to spend time looking in detail, look for repetitive patterns (use of the word 'fella', repeated 'your' instead of 'you're' are a couple of obvious ones across here, RL forum & twitter).

Curious.

And a while back he was posting on there about how the Hornets chairman had blocked me on Twitter. It’s a complete mystery how he happened to know that unless Mazey makes a habit of telling people when he’s blocked somebody on there.

What though, if giving out the actual facts undermined the agenda being actively peddled via social media?

It might bring down a precariously constructed house of cards.

This. "The Hornet" seems to be against Hornets explaining things to their fans in detail for "legal reasons" , yet claims to be the font of all knowledge and then spews out any old vitriolic bile as "in the know" after a few drinks.

As a supporter of both sports, I am at a loss as to how anyone can think that the football club would be doing anything that breached the 2016 lease agreement, given the litigation the individual directors are facing through the Morton House action.

It is clear to me that the new football club board are far more clued up on the "law of the land" and how to operate commercial agreements.

With regards public statements, the Board met with the Trust on 7th April and this was published:

Hornets

Q: How are relations with the Rugby Club at the moment? It’s been noted that they have operated under certain restrictions for their home games so far.
A: The Club conducted a review of all lease agreements as part of a Health and Safety review during the season. This wasn’t just with Hornets, but was with other lease holders such as Icon Sports, the NHS amongst others. Hornets are currently fully up to date with rent payments, and are currently operating within the rules of the lease agreement. As part of that, they have to operate under the Football Club’s Safety Certificate which makes the RAFC Board liable for its matches, hence the need to ensure that no one operates outside of the lease agreement.

I really do not know how much clearer it can be made.

Poll: What is it to be then?

'The Hornet' is pretty close to going full on nuclear this morning.

"I obviously haven’t read Hornets lease so wouldn’t know. From memory It was under Mark Wynn’s chairmanship back in 2016 that the current terms got agreed as part of a deal let’s not forget that gave them outright ownership of the stadium on the basis Hornets got a affordable and sustainable lease and facilities suitable to operate a club.

Why has this now only become an issue since RAFC find themselves in decline, subject to legal action and most notably since Mr Gauge has come along?

Why are AFC former directors, staff, suppliers, sponsors all either walking away in droves or being forced out? What is the common denominator?

Why are individuals who simply tried to invest and buy shares in a football club now taking legal action over wrong doing over alleged irregularities by current AFC Chair / board?

When you put it all together it paints a very worrying picture does it not?

I was told by someone close to Hornets that the initial problems started when Gauge called a meeting to try and dispute the fact that Hornets had a valid lease. Hornets have since proved they do have a valid lease i believe legally so the tactic since then seems to have been to chip away at clauses which interpreted in a certain way can hurt Hornets both financially and operationally.

You seem to like asking questions but don’t seem to like answering them. Here are a few for you…..

Do you think it’s right or reasonable that Hornets sign has been removed from Sandy Lane and has been there for years to advertise the club plays there?

Do you believe it’s reasonable to move the club out of their long term offices and a shop it has occupied for many years under the false pretence of a maintainable cycle and then move your own AFC staff in to those spaces?

Do you think it’s reasonable that the club should be told to operate out of a first floor box without any ability to face their customers?

Do you think it’s reasonable to be removing any trace of Rochdale Hornets from the walls and display cabinets on the first floor of the stadium?

Is it fair or reasonable to instruct Hornets a club with very limited revenue streams to either stop charging to use the carpark or give them the revenue it generates from doing so?

Is it reasonable to stop the club using the scoreboard or make them pay extra to use it? A scoreboard a supporter of both clubs over the years funded let’s not forget.

These are just examples I’ve witnessed of the way Hornets are being treated. If your comfortable with that then fine."

Plenty to dissect in there... lots of big accusations with (at a guess) little to no basis in fact - also a change in tone from 'breaching legal agreements' to 'unreasonable'.

I too follow both sports and used to watch Hornets regularly up to 30 odd years ago when I moved out of Rochdale.
I've finished with Hornets now though after reading that.
It's a despicable personal attack on the Rochdale chairman which I find totally distasteful.

Precisely

I honestly don't think anti-rugby rhetoric does us any favours. That statement provides clarity and its up to those from the Hornets side to provide equal clarity if they disagree

This dispute isn't (or really shouldn't be) about rugby, its about self-serving individuals who're causing harm to Hornets as a sports club representing the town

"Why are AFC former directors, staff, suppliers, sponsors all either walking away in droves or being forced out?"

"Why are individuals who simply tried to invest and buy shares in a football club now taking legal action over wrong doing over alleged irregularities by current AFC Chair / board?"

I suspect accusations like that are more likely to cause unreasonable behaviour than minimise it. Utterly clueless and expressing a total lack of empathy as to where RAFC is at and the nightmare of the last year. An exceptional way to destroy any goodwill that may have remained. You reap what you sow.

Been called a RL sympathiser many a time over the years, but it is beyond despicable for someone to speak about the legal issues the club are facing as a way of knocking the Club. It's clutching at straws, but to side with those who threaten the future of the club tells you all you need to know.

Makes you wonder if there is no smoke without fire with regards to speculation a little while ago that a couple of the current Hornets board had been in contact with Martin Halsall/Morton House when Bottomley was hawking the club around?

Is this Andy chap really trying to portray Curran and Co as good honest salt of the earth folk who just want to 'invest' in a lower league football club for philanthropic reasons?

I guess we will never know for certain, but its definitely something I heard around the time and again a couple of times since.

If our mate Andy is Hornet / Glory, he is certainly acting like somebody throwing their toys out of the pram because he didn't get his own way.

Chairman of Rochdale AFC & Rochdale Hornets, presiding over the entire stadium and hobnobbing with prominent figures from both sports and the town? I can see why it would sound appealing.
