The battle of the flags, but will Swansea City ban the Union Jack ? on 15:04 - Nov 22 by LittleEnglandJack | I've always personally quite liked that our support has outwardly unionist and nationalist factions within it that for the most part co-exist peacefully. Seeing the flags of both side by side in the ground serves as a reminder that football can be a unifier and that, at the end of the day, we're all of us of different political persuasions and identities brought together by a common love for the Swans. Let 'em all fly (within reason), I say. Yma O Hyd next to Swansea Loyal. Anybody doesn't like it and kicks up a fuss? Out the door they go. If you can't tolerate being sat in the same ground, supporting the same team, as someone with an openly different political persuasion for 90 minutes, then being a football fan probably isn't for you. Unfortunately, however, if people can't manage that, the safest option is probably to ban flags that could be at all construed as political (goodbye Welsh Republican flag)- and our support will lose something for it. |
Flags are fine, just lose rhe secatarian crap.

The issue with that is:- take for example a school that for hundred years has had a Christian assembly, then children of a different faith move in in greater and greater numbers and at some point the parents of those non Christian children say they want the assembly to be conducted too the teachings of their own religion, there is a row and somebody then says ok since we can't agree there should be no assembly. I think people should assimilate, why can't people just take Swansea or Welsh flags to Swansea games.

Anglo Saxon types like to say to indigenous Welsh, 'we are all British', well yes being Welsh and being an ancient Briton are synonymous but Anglo Saxon's......hmm, King Arthur and the boys were fighting those Germanic tribes, anyway, If our friends the other side of the Dyke are British these days like they say they are (ps after all this time, I think they are now British), then where is the tribalism ?, the them and us, we can't have the same flags, come on Swans fans get the Welsh flags out. Just playing devils advocate myself for you to know Keith.

You seem to once again miss the fact you are the problem with the discrimination towards fans who are unionist’s! The union flag, Northern Ireland flag and the green hill jacks tricolour have hung side by side for years, the green hill jacks and the unionists lads have been friends and gotten on yet it seems to be this new breed of welsh football fans that seem to have a problem with the union flag being in attendance. Unfortunately, because of your behaviour regarding the union flag I’d be very surprised if the stadium don’t ban all flags! Not once have any of us complained about any type of flag until the complaints about another flag was made, you’re cutting your nose to spite your face now and you’ve only yourselves to blame As previously mentioned welsh, union and the tricolour have hung side by side for years and years with absolutely no problem between anyone yet this new influx of welsh football fan have kicked up a storm in which will back fire on them in more ways than one. The fact a flag that has no or little affiliation to you can cause upset and anger speaks more about you than it does on the flag carrier

Swansea games are more often against the rivals from across the border. This is a time for declaring identity as the contest commences. Flying fags of the London based Government most associated with the rivals will not cut it. Up until 1996 the English would use this flag as their own as you will see in clips of 1966.

I haven't personally complained about any flag and have never taken a flag to a Swansea game, but I'm merely pointing out that certain flags upset people as has been demonstrated recently, why some fans in recent times fly the same flags as our rivals is a mystery to me I must say and clearly it upsets lots of Swans fans as has been witnessed recently.

If people carry on with this anti English, anti UK nonsense we won't have to worry about rivals "from across the border" because we'll end up playing Newtown, Cefn Druids and Barry Town United instead. Bear in mind we were invited to join what is currently called the English Football league and if they so wish they could probably remove us and send us "home" to Wales. Lets ban ALL flags, even the Welsh flag and see if everyone is happy with that. Racists, xenophobes...idiots.

Hard to disagree that the issue probably stems from the growing confidence of the Welsh Independence movement, which is particularly strong amongst Welsh football fans. You only have to go to a Wales game to hear a vocal minority singing about how much they hate the Union Jack. There's definitely a growing segment of our support that are pro indie, and they seem keen on proving the welshness of themselves and the Swans to other welsh football fans, amongst whom we've obviously got something of a reputation for unionism. You only have to go on twitter to see some of our fans slating their fellow jacks for flying the UJ to try and appease scummers (who are all totally 100% Welsh nationalists, obviously). All seems a bit a insecure really, given we all know which city voted for devolution and which one didn't.

& that’s where all Welsh Nationalists lose any credibility. Go & watch football in the Welsh league & don’t patronise those of us who follow a Welsh club who are invited to the English league.

There has always been some interest in Welsh independence from young Welsh football fans (18-25) as they have nothing to lose, it a bit of a plunge for older people as they might have house, car, pension etc to worry about.

Welsh teams were there from the outset or at least not far off and any change on the basis of race will be discriminatory. Precedent is part law. Welsh team belong because they always have. It could only happen if Cymru went independent but een then not certain. I believe England will decide that if they get fed up with us or want a local area for offshore banking with zip wires for the kids.
