BBM contract confirmed on 09:01 - Mar 12 by HK_Dale | It is interesting how GR was keen to add new board members but only if they can bring money. It’s a bit of a catch 22 as the combination of wealthy enough to buy into the board, helpful skills, and die hard fan may be in short supply. At some point, it would be worth considering adding board members that can meet the latter two of those three criteria. It doesn’t cost the club anything but they will add some additional insights and skills albeit without the investment they are looking for. |

BBM contract confirmed on 09:54 - Mar 12 with 3006 views | James1980 | I know what's happening DB and BBM are actually that bloke from forever Bury and that lass who chained herself to the drain pipe in disguise. They have an wicked plan to bring Rochdale down from within. And their going get away with it unless some meddling kids take off their masks. Sounds ridiculous doesn't it. That's because it is ridiculous. As is the notion that the team in 'head office' are actively and deliberately destroying the club.

It’s not a simple binary though James. It is possible they are working hard (as constantly reminded on Wednesday) but just aren’t good enough. People can work as hard as they want but if they aren’t good enough then the outcomes will be subpar. In the world outside football it’s the role of the board to identify underperforming management teams and replace them. We seemingly don’t have that effective oversight at the moment. And wouldn’t surprise me if DA and EM have seen this and come to the conclusion it’s of limited value to invest time and capital at this time. It doesn’t have to be deliberate but it can still be a bad outcome for the club...

I dont think anyone thinks there is anyone on the board deliberately trying to destroy the club. The problem lies in the lack of real awareness of the speed at which the rest of the world is spinning around them. Tweaking the things that worked 2,3,4 decades ago isnt a policy capable of taking us forwards at the pace we need to move. There are 100s of small things that could be better but there are also lots of bigger initiatives that could have been taken to fix the roof when the sun was shining. How much money has been wasted on the pitch over the last 10 years? Who presided over the Lottery going backwards? Why did we buy the the Ratcliffe Arms to then do so little with it? We would have done better turning it into a McDonalds or an Italian restaurant. Why did they take so long to get a decent online shop? Why cant you buy 4 or 5 game tickets at a small discount or Dale christmas cards or bottles of Dale beer or Dale specialist pies? Is it really more profitable to rent out the food stalls in the ground rather than have full control of the quality and prices? What steps have been taken to become involved with all the junior football clubs in town? Why are there no scratch cards in pubs and takeaways? What extra marketing has been done in Bury? And on and on.....

Seen comments about, planning permission, winding up announcements, comparing us to Brighton when they nearly folded. Comments accusing certain people of destroying the club. In other news just seen this article https://www.rochdaleonline.co.uk/news-features/4/sport-news/139730/virtual-fans- 'When Rochdale Online requested details on exactly when the contract extension had been agreed, Rochdale AFC declined to comment.'

all fair criticisms but as is often said today, hindsight is a wonderful skill and it doesn't help solve today's immediate problem and I don't think the sun was ever shining; indeed we've had to narrow the pitch to cope with the Main Stand shade - ie reduce our expectations. There's a clue there!

So much of that isn't hindsight, though, as they have been said countless times on here down the years in the here and now, but were ignored when things were going well on the pitch.

agreed they were said, but the finances (to implement some if not all those ideas) were even worse back then and fundamentally it doesn't change the issue that none of them help with the current situation - the 'I wouldn't have started from here' approach may be entertaining but it doesn't get us very far.

Again the folk who throw the old "hindsight" card around are generally the ones too stubborn to listen or act at the time, basically it's a cop out for someone's saying if they'd have handled it differently at the time there would have been a better outcome.... Again all this was and always is constantly presented at the time, they choose not to listen

Not so. During the period c.2007-2020 there were ample opportunities to implement at least some of those measures, especially the ones which were aimed at helping grow the fanbase, and all within the finances available, which incidentally enabled the return of the stadium to Dale ownership

Some of the things discussed didn't involve finance - or certainly not huge amounts. We're talking suggestions and offers of help from fans, advice from fans whose work and businesses would be useful to the club at the time, pointers as to where things could be improved, and so on. If it were possible to trawl back that far, the Centenary Season is your best starting point. [Post edited 12 Mar 2021 13:51]

Fully agree. The fact that the club won't comment is very damning. Add this to at least one Director not knowing that he had been awarded another year, and it leads me to wonder what on Earth is going on. EGM needed asap, and the person responsible needs grilling about this and other serious matters.

"People can work as hard as they want, but if they aren't good enough . ." That just about describes my answer when someone asked me what's gone wrong at The Dale. I've watched every game this season (I hadn't much else to do!) and I've come to the conclusion that the management and team may well be working as hard as they can but, at the end of the day, they're just not good enough. So much for Wednesday night's admission by David Bottomley that, "We accept that we could've communicated better, and will strive to do that better in the future". By e mail on the night of the forum, fans were asking when this contract extension was signed and announced. No answer. On Thursday, supporters we emailing the club asking the same questions, to be given a statement that didn't even mention the words "contract extension" , containing the disclaimer "We accept and apologise that communication on this topic hasn’t been up to the high standards we aspire to." As far as I know, no supporter has been given the answers to the questions of when this contract extension was signed and announced. Today we discover this from a long-standing local news website: "When Rochdale Online requested details on exactly when the contract extension had been agreed, Rochdale AFC declined to comment. Why the denial? Is this some cozy deal knocked up between BBM and someone who is clearly, emotionally even, a great fan of his without anyone else being allowed to know? How did that happen? Clearly empty words about striving to communicate better when the following hours indicate that reasonable requests to answer two simple and straightforward questions can't be met. This looks very dodgy and damaging to the club IMHO, and definitely embarrassing.
