Usually try to avoid anything that I’ve watched made in the 60’s/70’s or 80s as they’re usually shite, but watched Carrie last night and thought it was very well made and kept to the original perfectly. What remakes do you all like?

The 1991 Scorsese remake of Cape Fear with Robert De Niro and Nick Nolte was one of the very rare examples of a remake being better than the original IMO.

That's interesting. I was such a big fan of the original I wouldn't have dreamt of seeing the US remake.

I watched John Carpenter's "The Thing" way back when, silly title but actually quite a good film, I watched a trailer for the remake years later and thought no absolutely no it looked bloody awful so I swerved it and have stayed swerved ever since.

Not remakes as such but "Alien" when it came out was superb, why they came out with "Alien 2-3-4-5-6-7 etcetera is beyond me ($ I suppose) just leave a classic film alone.

Michael Mann's Heat (1995) is a remake of his earlier film L.A. Takedown (1989), remade with a bigger budget and better actors.

"The Flight of the Phoenix" was another classic 60's film that was remade 2002 or somewhere thereabouts, gave the remake a swerve too.
Can't see the point of watching a remade film that grabbed you first time round.
Stuck in me ways I suppose.

The remake of True Grit starring Jeff Bridges was vastly superior to the original starring John Wayne. But then I'm a fan of Mr Bridges and not of Mr Wayne.
Like Ted in a previous thread, I dislike sequels. Film making and writing at its laziest.

There aint half been some clever bastards.

All versions of Invasion of the body snatchers are good.

The 1978 one with Donald Sutherland is the best in my opinion.

Was it good? I turned it off after 10 minutes cos it felt like a shot for shot remake of the original and I didn't need to see it twice

I really enjoyed a film called Sorcerer (1978) which is a remake of a film called the Wages of Fear (1953). I haven’t seen the original although I’ve been meaning to. Apparently it’s really good but a difficult watch, which was the intension of the director. Sorcerer is slightly more palatable by all accounts.

I loved them both but felt the remake edged it because of the two leads performances. The whole thing is just such a clever and beautifully handled take on the rights of passage vampire/demon genre. It also works like Alien in that it has several key jump scenes that set a tone but the film is simply about love and belonging - albeit one of them is a demon.

There's a couple I like - 3.10 to Yuma and The Lady Vanishes with Sybil Shepherd.

The John Carpenter version of The Thing is one of my all-time favourite films.
Watched the remake recently (well, actually it's kind of a prequel) expecting to dislike it but actually it was alright.

The recent remake of Suspiria is really good.

The Fly with Jeff Goldblum is better

True facts about Aliens

James Cameron's stock was super high after the success of The Terminator. He had a meeting to pitch a new film to some studio execs, who were very confused that they'd heard he wanted to make a sequel to Alien - a fairly successful film, but one which had been enveloped in legal battles since its release.

Cameron comes into the room with no paper or anything and writes ALIEN on a chalkboard. He then writes an S at the end. He then dramatically put two lines through the S to make ALIEN$. He then grins.

They gave him $18m on the spot.

Everything after Aliens is dreadful, but have always rooted for David Fincher cos of how badly the studio treated him on Alien 3

I wouldn't say it's better - just different. The first one was an intense thriller/sci fi horror. It kept you on the edge of your seat through out. Also so original and created a genre of sci-fi horror movies. Aliens was a great shoot 'em up, full on action thriller. I enjoyed them both for different reasons, but have never really thought of the second one as a sequel just because it's a completely film from the first, which is why it's so good.

"A Night to Remember" is such a wonderful film and telling of the story. And fairly recently I saw Barry Norman saying that it was his favourite film.

Don't remake it! You won't make any money, nor win any Oscars.

I'll give you another sequel that died a death for me Mr M.

The first time I watched Trainspotting I thought after it finished WTF that was brilliant, great script-acting no nonsense in your face.

Then they brought out T2 Trainspotting, I done the first 20-30 minutes sitting there thinking it's just not working, weak and stupid story line and not much else of anything, a predictable and lazy film.

Yes. Correct ones.

;)

Weirdly new Cape Fear is on now.

And my view is mainly down to the fact I fn LOVE Robert Mitchum. (although he has a cameo in the remake too of course).

Both great films.

Although I'm not having it that The fkn Departed is better than Infernal Affairs. Now that is bullsh!t.

Bare bones.

Gregory Peck also had a cameo in the remake as well.
