Craig Dawson 09:00 - Oct 5 with 6125 views | BigKindo | The Watford defender's future in doubt amid West Ham and Fulham transfer speculation Craig Dawson's days at the club could be numbered Watford defender Craig Dawson's future has been thrown into doubt after he was left out of the most recent squad. The centre-back was not included in the matchday 18 on Saturday for the Championship clash away at Reading. The 30-year-old has made just one appearance for the club so far this season - playing the full 90 minutes in the 3-1 Carabao Cup defeat at Newport County. He missed Watford's opening game of the season due to illness and was an unused substitute for the the matches against Sheffield Wednesday and Luton Town. Boss Vladimir Ivic left Dawson out of the squad completely for the clash with Royals at Madejski Stadium, preferring to put new signing William Troost-Ekong among the replacements instead. It's understood Dawson has been told he can move on from the club having fallen down the pecking order for centre-backs at Watford. The former West Brom and Rochdale player has played 31 games for the club since being signed last summer from the Baggies. He has just under three years left on his contract at Vicarage Road and has been linked with a move to either West Ham United or Fulham in this summer's transfer window.

No, the club sold the sell on clause to get the last payment in one go rather than instalments

When did we do that? Presumably we must have been skint again, as no other reason to do it. I would guess this will be his final large (3 year?) contract on good money before he hopefully finishes his career with us.

To play" Devil's Advocate", could it not be seen as a prudent thing to do as the chance of Dawson commanding a bigger fee in the future than the one paid by Watford bearing in mind his age and length of contract he has is perhaps unlikely. See a transfer fee of £4 Million is being suggested in the press amongst interest from West Ham

Is that true? Seems a very strange thing to do,.. when we normally make something out of most moves our ex players make.

1 million %... It was when he transferred from Wet Brom, if Watford sold him on at a profit, they would not have to share it

It’s only prudent really if we needed the cash to pay off debts or we were skint again. The returns investment wise in money markets or short term bonds at that time were sod all (still are) so selling the clause had no benefit other than getting cash in up front. Had Craig had a blinding season and been looked at by say arsenal then we could potentially have lost a lot, as it happens no harm done, but it was a strange move.

Birmingham Live article 19/12/19 claims that when they sold Dawson to Watford, West Brom offloaded the right to receive a future transfer payment to Macquarie Bank Limited in exchange for (slightly reduced) immediate cash. Under the arrangement of the clubs' transfer agreement, the £490k sell-on fee to Rochdale is due to be paid by Watford to the Premier League, also on 1 September 2021, and then passed onto Rochdale. I assume they have already paid the balance of the sell-on to us.
