Best British Films 19:47 - Sep 8 with 21837 viewsBrianMcCarthy

I've been binging on British cinema these last couple of weeks, re-watching old favourites and catching up on a couple that I'd always meant to get to but never quite managed to.

What's everybody's favourites? I'll throw mine in later on, but for now I don't want to lead the witness, y'r honour.

I'll be bookmarking this thread and adding to it occasionally.

Relatively recently - A Field In England which was really weird. My favs though were the Britsh black and white films. League Of Gentlemen with Jack Hawkins, Ice Cold In Alex etc. So many good films. Plus the aforementioned Mike Leigh and Ken Loach stuff.

Agree with pretty much everything so far. Of recent releases I really enjoyed The Death Of Stalin. Well put together cast, good script and almost Ealing Comedy feel to Armando Ianucci's film.

Never knowingly understood

The Ladykillers & Kind Hearts & Coronets Those Ealing comedies were brilliant.

Then into the '60's with Alfie, To Sir with love, Dr. Zhivago, Up the Junction, Kes & many others.

However, the best of the lot IMO was on television rather than cinema - Cathy come home was an incredible production .

Much too difficult a viewing to call it a favourite, but it had a bigger impact than anything I've seen before or since!

Not sure how many of these would be classed as solely British - but I'll throw in Twin Town, Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead (didn't think much of the third one), and The Damned United;

28 Days Later (good film, great soundtrack); Children of Men;

And Atonement, which outDunkirked Dunkirk (which I also liked a lot).

No particular order but just a few that spring to mind.

'Nuts In May'
'Life of Brian' and 'Monty Python and The Holy Grail'
'Lawrence of Arabia' (what an opening scene)
'Trainspotting'
'Zulu'
Thought 'Kes' was a good film.
Try watching a film called 'The Hill' with Sean Connery in it if you get a spare 2 hours or so.
I think 'My Left Foot' may not be British I know it was set in Dublin but who knows?

My Father had a profound influence on me, he was a lunatic.

If none of you think that The Full Month shouldn't be there because it's "too mainstream", "too commercial" or " not cult enough" to be up there have forgotten just how funny it was / is. Go and Watch it again; it is a wonderful, wonderful piece of Cinema.

Can we go out yet?
