With Christmas fast approaching, I am thinking of purchasing a DSLR camera. I know there are some experts on here.

Which camera in the sub £400 bracket would be an ideal one for a beginner? Would a second hand one from Gumtree/Ebay be a better choice?

Let's hear your views.

No. That would be a disturbing thing to do. I'll leave it to the cops.

What are you using it for...video or as an actual still shot camera? If you're primarily doing videos I would recommend an actual video camera. Something like a Canon Vixia HF series, something like an M52 or G20 would be right around the range your looking for. I filmed an entire full length film last year using nothing but a Canon M52 and an old DV camcorder, so I know it'll work.

Unfortunately if your primary purpose is to take photos I couldn't help you there, but I'm sure someone more familiar with DSLR's could help.

I'll probably use it for stills but will also take some video with it.

Do not waste your time.
You will hardly if ever look at the photos or videos you take.
Total waste of money,time,and effort.
You are obviously bored and searching for a pastime,I guarantee within
1 month it will be stuck in a draw never to be used again apart from an
occasional wedding or holiday and then you will never look at the photos
more than once before you snuff it.

Nomad's a Canon man. I wouldn't argue with him on the subject.

I have one of these and I'm very happy with it.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

I'm a Canon man - relatively straightforward user interface, intuitive to play around with the manual settings and - most important for me - I prefer the lenses. In many ways, the lens is more important than the body.

In your price range, you could go for the 700D, or go for an entry level 1200d, both with simple lenses. You can then upgrade body and llenses in the future if you get into it. All interchangeable.

I've just treated myself to the 70D, and then spent over two times more on an epic 100-400mm L series zoom. Perfect for the safari I'm about to go on.
