Seem to remember ML, on his appointment, being asked by the press whether he'd continue the "keep ball" possession game and he replied that the object of the game is not merely to "keep the ball" but to score more goals than the opposition.
Playing keep ball is actually a defensive technique. What makes it attractive and compelling to watch is when the ball retention carries an implicit threat by suddenly shifting from defensive to offensive mode, often times with just one or two cleverly timed and placed passes.
