A few of us had a conversation last night started by one lad who maintained that he hadn't an addictive personality - to much laughter as we are all clubmates and besotted and hopelessly addicted to our GAA club, so his protests rang hollow straight away.
This then turned into us listing our addictions, and, for a fella that cods himself that he knows himself well, I was amazed how many addictions I have or have had. Genuine addictions, where for a while nothing else mattered. Most of them a source of deep joy, but not all!
In order of my life :-
QPR - first ever addiction Banana ice cream Panini football stickers Cycling - I was going to be great Bazooka Joes Lucky bags Shoot League Ladders Comics - Scoop, Beano, Whizzer and Chips Arcade Games - Space Invaders, Asteroids Stealing from Charlie's shop in the town Dairy MIlk Pool Urhan GAA - the second biggest addiction of my life Chipsticks Reading - Irish authors, then English, then American Irish trad music and playing the accordion - I was going to be great Films - the addiction really kicked in with Star Wars Indie music - still going, this one Cork GAA Girls - must be moody, schizophrenia a bonus 60's soul music Dope Writing - I was going to be great Surfing - I was going to be...well... Grown-up women - moodier than before, schizophrenia now an absolute Box sets - Frasier, Seinfeld, The Wire, West Wing, please god let there be something else soon and on... and on...and on...
Turned into a great night, light-hearted even though we had a recovering alcoholic and a recovering drug addict in our number. My theory was that we all have what people call addictive personalities to a lesser or greater degree. Some addictions harm us or catch us at the wrong time. But most addictions are great, they inspire us, they make us thirsty for knowledge, and they shape us into unique beings. And having an addictive personality should not be a source of shame in any way. The lads only half-agreed with my Gordon Gecko oratory, but I'm sticking to my guns!
So - have you an addictive personality, and what are/were your addictions?
I thank you.

Well I guess we all have somewhat of an addictive side...
Mine throughout my life have been or are:- Football - obsessively watch any game, any where QPR - all things Music - mainly house and soul Records - see above, I cannot bear to part with my collection and add to it now and then these days Alcohol - on dodgy ground here... I could quite easily go over the edge but to coin a phrase used by a good friend of mine - somewhat of a social alcoholic!! Dogs - mainly Labradors
In the dim distant past I'd of probably added some reference to social drug taking, clubbing and women.
Brian's list surprises me.... you'd never of guessed that at Willesden College all those years ago!!!
Cherish and enjoy life.... this ain't no dress rehearsal

True! It's amazing how often we change, time and time again. I've moved around so much that I've met so many different people, and their interests I suppose have rubbed off on me. Then you move again, and you leave another bit of you behind, and you change again in some small way. Sometimes, I'll think of something that happened to me - say the Thompson out campaign - and wonder if it was really me at all!

Socialising, travelling and learning coupled with seemingly justifiable obsession, usually achieved through sport, music and many forms of art. These normally have involved the major vices of one form or another over the years, I try and think of the reasons and the only excuse that I can give, is that it is trying to live life to the full within the boundaries that are available to you.
I may re read this sober tomorrow and question myself, or not!
As if to underline this I have been watching 'Close my eyes' on Film 4 1991, new to me, it tackles the taboo subject of incest.

Peanut butter. Has to be crunchy type. Best invention from the States. However have had to scale back on the stuff when I found cholesterol levels were nearly off the Richter Scale! Now thanks to statins I can indulge in the stuff again...but only in moderation.

(who am i kidding) girls breasts* soul music, house music, back to soul music, smattering of house music** clubbing second generation irish catholic women* (married 2 now) watches * this bloody place* racehorse ownership* gambling*
booze, drugs and smoking pretty much passed me by. only ever drank moderately and suspect getting married young helped prevent the drugs, but could have easily pushed me to them too! Rarely watch football now apart form us; that probably does enough damage to put me off the rest!
the fact that only Disco and Simmo have alluded to wan k*ing in a list of past addictions surprises me in that I thought most of the people on here were adult men, with a smattering of female visitors too. This suggests that other than Disco and Simmo, most of you (especially the men) are either lying, or under 13. I'll leave you to decide which.
So some of my addictions (* indicates ongoing):
Lego Model railways Wan king Hi fi and music (bit of a dabbler, if I'm honest, not ongoing at present, but liable to return at any time) QPR* Going to gigs Girls/women Darts Cannabis* (not quite an addiction, more of a habit) Drinking alcohol (again, fortunately not an addiction, was more of a habit) Internet fora* Messing on the internet when I should be working* (linked to the above, and like any proper addiction, this one makes me feel especially bad about myself) Biscuits and cakes*
I do think I have quite an addictive personality, so the lack of porn, class A drugs, cigarettes and gambling in the above list makes me feel secretly quite pleased with myself.

have to say that i'm not sure that as a regualr past time that w*nking is necessarily an addicition. can you image the support group of WA all sat around in a circle passing the box of kleenex to each other.
Hi, my name is WestberksR and it's been 3 days since my last vvank! (cue applause from the rest of the support group, followed by someones relapse confession having knocked out a quick one on the way there.

Worthy of its own thread this subject. FWIW, IMO it's an act of nature not an addiction.
