Thomas Tuchel agrees to become next England manager ...
at 11:00 18 Oct 2024

Don’t care about Bellamy one way or the other. If he does well, he’ll deserve the higher profile and inevitable job offers that come with it.

If he doesn’t, he won’t get cut as much slack as others would. He’s brought that on himself.

While he’s doing well for Wales, he’s fine by me.

No doubt he has baggage. That’s going to bite him as soon as he starts struggling. Same as Tuchels nationality. Both will be largely ignored while they are getting results.

Plenty of people have said they don’t want a nice guy running our club, they’d much rather someone abrasive who gets the team playing well. I’m not sure if you were in that camp, but plenty have said it in the past and I agree with it. Surely that applies to international football too?

He won’t win everybody over as he had an obnoxious image as a player. Whether that was his true personality, a burning will to win or a combination of both is up for debate.

If people can put that aside, he’s been a breath of fresh air so far, both in results and the way we’ve played compared to under Page.

I’ve got a nagging feeling he’ll lose his cool at some point and it will all blow up, but so far it’s hard to fault him.

The post that starts a thread can’t be irrelevant by definition. Any response to it can be.

My answer to it is - no, of course not, we can’t afford Harry Darling at the moment.

Further down the thread, you asked me a question, I answered and you launched off on a tangent.

Your personal opinion on signing past/older players is irrelevant when the question was who the club could afford.

If we start Vipotnik we’ll have to replace him. If Cullen is already on the field we’ll have to put Peart-Harris or Cooper or someone up front. I think Cullen and Vipotnik have to share the striker role Saturday, whoever starts.

Id certainly like to see Parker and/or Govea on the bench if they are ready. It reduces the chances of Abdulai being made to play on the wing and increases his chances of coming on in the middle.

You asked me who we could afford, I said we couldn’t afford Ben Davies.

Your quoted response to that was a diatribe about why signing veterans was a bad idea.

It was completely irrelevant as to who we could afford, which is why I quoted you directly calling it irrelevant.

English fans will as soon as they have a bad run. Not all of them by any means, but as soon as things aren’t going his way, you’ll hear about his nationality. Guaranteed.

I’m the same as you, I wouldn’t care if Wales had an English manager as I didn’t care about Cooper managing us, but there would be enough noise if that manager had a few bad results.

How can we do that when he’s one of two centre backs?

Chuck them both in the reserves until they sign new contracts?

Without a significant change in the coming weeks, we can’t afford Harry Darling let alone Ben Davies.

I’m just pleased they didn’t get Pep!

He’s going to get it in the neck for being German as soon as they have a few bad results, or even performances like they did at the start of the Euros.

We’d be the same. An English manager wouldn’t get cut as much slack as a Welsh one.

Yes absolutely, but it’s blindingly obvious to me when I stream away games too.

With Martin and Duff I could completely understand it. A minority seem to be judging Williams as if he’s on a level playing field.

Then he’s got to pace himself over 90 mins plus not 60/70 minutes and he’s less effective the whole game.

You have to realise other teams with stronger squads are doing this too. We have the choice of playing our players at a high intensity until they have to come off, or playing below their capacity against opponents who can go flat out for an hour, then be replaced by a similar quality player who can go flat out for the rest of the game.

It’s why we drop so many points in games we’ve been winning.

Completely agree. It’s been obvious all season. It really hampers the weaker squads.

Yeah I have.

For the life of me I can’t understand why though. I think he’s doing a very good job with a hand tied behind his back.

Gets results, doesn’t have public tantrums, punches above his weight.

Why would they do that? We’re in a comfortable position with one striker and two centre backs. He’s doing far better than the owners have any right to expect.

I doubt it.

We don’t need that. It’s 5 substitutions per game. That side of it is getting more like rugby, pre planned substitutions and players knowing they’ll be on for the last half hour.

I don’t particularly like it, but that’s the way it’s gone.
