Dev Squad
at 08:04 8 Sep 2024

IF the rumours are true (wants first team action, refused a loan), its silly stuff from Kolli. He'd be well advised to look at where everyone ended up that were released from the dev squad this past summer. He has a golden opportunity at a championship club willing to invest in and develop him, if only he will let them.

I think in NL we have youth mentors who assist upcoming players in career choices, managing expectations, plotting a career path, etc. Instead of your dad poisoning your head, thinking you're the next Ronaldo off whom he can become rich, just because you tore up some local U13 league.

If rumours are true that Kolli is refusing to sign a new contract and wants to move on (or feature in the 1st team), I think his appearances at any level will be very limited from now on.

That was what was speculated on another thread.

What is protocol in such a case? Surely if and employee is not meeting expectations in his job, he can be reprimanded and eventually fired? As always the wonderful world of football probably has different rules, but I would think that if a player refuses to train or play, a club can refuse to pay or eventually fire him?

Acca payout, stories of success
at 05:19 2 Sep 2024

Last year when Ajax famously lost in the cup to an amateur team for the first time in their history: A friend of one of the players bet €15 that his mate would score and that they would beat Ajax. They won 3-2 with an injury time winner, his mate scored twice and he won more than €11.000

Expiring contracts
at 07:33 1 Sep 2024

For as much as we (are allowed to) know, who are in the last year of their contracts?

Cook, Colback, Frey, Anderson in the 30+ bracket. They all seem to enjoy what they are doing now and for lack of offers from elsewhere considering their age, might stay on. If featured in our plans of course.

Paal, Chair, Dunne. Who else? The younger lads are a tougher sell to keep hold of, I think.

At this stage I would like to see the bulk of them, if not all, stay on. All depends on how the new lads settle in and Lloyd, Kolli, EDB, etc progress enough to become regulars.

Taylor Richards not in Cambridge match squad and not listed as injured either. That's odd.

Looking much improved tonight as well. Really hope we get him to sign a new deal.

Walsh on tonight's win

Makes you wonder if we shouldn't have given a few more games last season. But assume the staff judged him "not ready yet".

We're in a good position for GKs at the moment.

Entertaining game. We did well, Luton came at us, but we held our ground.

Like Morrison. Quietly did the business. Could develop into a very reliable CB.
Varane much improved in the middle. Santos also much better.
Celar going to be good, had very nice first time pick-ups and passes from loose balls.
Walsh a very good #2 to have at championship level.

Lots of positives to take from this one, not least the win.

Dykes sold apparently

It might also be about freeing up wages. He signed a new deal last year, which one would assume was an improved deal (for him). I recall reading that he was now our highest earning player ok 18K a week. That's almost 1m a year.

Of course, no way to verify if that is true.

We'll only get an idea of the number if the buying club actually reveals how much they have paid, which is not likely I think. We'll probably have a condition to keep that confidential (for as much as that would be possible)

We've signed new players in just about every position:

GK: Nardi
D: Santos, Morrison
DM: Varane
CM: Madsen
AM: Dembele, Saito
S: Celar

Only left-back we haven't strengthened (yet) and oddly, shipped out the back-up player there. So expecting someone to still come in, I'd say.

How much have we actually spent?

I suspect we made a small profit on the Sincs-Celar swap. Throw in the extra 5m+ from the new sky deal, there are definitely some room for paying transfer fees. Varane was the only significant fee on top of that, leaving plenty of room.

We saved on relative high earners Asmir, Willock and perhaps Dozzell leaving, so I also think there should be room on the wage bill to afford all the new lads if they are paid sensible salaries.

I think we're OK.

The only first team player currently out of favour (or missing, for lack of better description) is Reggie Canon. All the others I can see featuring at some stage.

This does indeed allow us to loan out the likes of Kolli, Lloyd, Tuck, etc to teams where they will feature more prominently.

I really think our recruitment model has taken a major turn for the better this summer.

He came through Heerenveen here in NL. A club that has an excellent track record of scouting Scandinavian talents. I know more about how Heerenveen operate than what I can tell here in public, but if he came through their system, there is enough reason to be optimistic.

I have a Dutch friend who watched last year's rugby WC with me knowing nothing about rugby and he couldn't stop talking about the players' respect for the officials and level of "obedience". We'd never get that into football, but would be nice if we did.

Centre Mid - do we need Hayden
at 09:34 19 Aug 2024

I don't think we've spent all our money yet. Celar in was straight swap for Sincs out.

We have an extra 5m from Sky money, I understand. Don't think we've used all of that on Varane and whoever we paid a fee for.

Looking at the ages of our incoming signings who's seen first team action already:

Nardi - 30
Morrison - 21
Santos - 23
Varane - 22
Celar - 25
Dembele - 21
Saito - 23
Bennie - 18

Probably missing one or two. They all fit the "model", but imho a Hayden to balance things out experience and "grit" wise is needed, for sure.

Our starting centre forward this season

I think we have to wait and see what the two new wingers bring to the party. I strongly suspect they might be able to bring our striker(s) into play more which might change who we play up front.

I still have hopes for Celar.

Started both games in the league, which is exactly what we wanted for him.
