BIden v Trump - and we thought our options were poor !!
at 16:28 28 Jul 2024

"Food prices have gone up alarmingly all over the world and coincidentally, so have corporate profits. The excuse of "supply chain issues" has turned out to be total BS, they just a bunch of greedy MF's. Trumps tax cuts added trillions to the debt and did very little to help the average American. The media has to take most of the blame for the way people 'feel' about the economy and crime. Only many years later are we able to look back at the numbers and see that it was the opposite of what the media was telling us (depending on which media you are listening to of course)."

I'm just going to respond to this bit because I think I can add some relevant context. I've worked for a couple different large food/drink corporations before and since COVID and been involved in some of the discussions at board level. Realistically it's both greed/ambition and supply chains right? Corporations have aggressive goals. If every business is looking to grow market share they can't all succeed. Likewise they've all got aggressive plans to improve profitability.

I worked for one company in 2017/2018 that when the corporate tax cuts came in that were theoretically going to be passed onto employees and/or consumers literally stood up in a town hall meeting and said "we understand that you might be expecting this to be passed on but we are under our profitability targets for the year so we're going to take it and reward our shareholders, and use it to try and be in a stronger position for next year". Corporate greed.

On the other hand, Ukraine was responsible for close to HALF of the worlds sunflower oil production in 2021. The war has genuinely led to a massive shortage and therefore massive spike in the cost, if you are buying a product which is made with sunflower oil it's going to be much more expensive today than three years ago. Not suggesting that all raw materials have gone up that much obviously. But now the rising price of food also means wages go up and so do costs. It's a horrible vicious cycle.

I'll say in my experience and from speaking to other people in the industry that profitability margin of food/drink companies isnt that much higher if at all than it was pre COVID - though in absolute dollars it's probably higher.

And though this isn't a point that you've made, the idea that there's some shadowy cabal is orchestrating the events of the world is hilarious. It's not a conspiracy just a huge number of people with varying levels of money and influence trying to get more of what people like that want - more money and influence - and stacking the deck accordingly.

Social media is exactly this. Twitter in particular is culpable. No room for nuance with 160 characters, and a nuanced argument with balanced perspective is far too much effort to read, much better to post something dramatic.

And now "engagement" becomes like a currency you can monetize and people outbid each other to post more extreme viewpoints.

I've gone the other way. Always hated wearing caps but now my hair is disappearing as I age so I have to wear one or I get sunburnt!

That would make the decision for China's football team to start a fight with us in a behind closed doors friendly match a particularly risky one.

You should visit Chicago.

It's Cicada-gaddeon. There's a brood of Cicadas that only emerges once every 17 years in Chicago. There's another brood that only emerges every 13 years. This year is the intersection of both of them, they are all over the place and the noise is ridiculous.

I think we're over the worst of it now thankfully.

Just to take this WAY off the intended topic briefly, wasn't there a whole big thing about Keanu Reeves doing this a while ago? In every picture he was deliberately holding his hands open face behind the other persons back without touching them or something?

Yeah it's 2-0, but it's actually been pretty encouraging from us considering the opposition. Definitely held our own

As one door closes, a Celar door opens – Signing
at 15:57 20 Jul 2024

I'll throw my hat into the song ring with one to the tune of ob-la-di ob-la-da

Rangers went shopping in the marketplace
Celar was a forward overseas
Celar said to Rangers "boy I like your place"
And Rangers said we'd like to sign you please

Zan Celar, Zan Celar, Zan Celar

I had the exact same thought and would be astonished if you can't buy them with a massive markup from his website by this time next week

I know this isnt really the point but does anybody know what happens with Shamrock Rovers if City sell Armstrong?

Do they get 25% of the sell on fee we get from City?

I think it depends how you define "potential". Someone that's 8/10 across the board in terms of their attributes at 21 has potential, and you're gambling that they can improve a couple of those to 9s.

Someone like Sinclair already has some 9s and 10s(pace, strength), but it's offset by a whole bunch of 4s and 5s which severely limit his effectiveness currently.

Bit like buying a house I guess, if it's in an incredible location and is in great condition except for a massive hole in the roof and a kitchen which needs to be redone, you might back yourself to fix those and your upside is higher than if you get a "nice" house that you can add an extension onto at some point. Of course, if you don't fix the hole in the roof then you've made a terrible buy.

I don't think he's really done anything yet, but any club wanting to sign him, including us, is gambling on the upside, rather than what's there at the moment.

While that's the case for a lot of younger players it's even more so true in this case where he has some elite attributes and several will under par, vs a player who is"good" across the board

Completely agree with this too. As I say, both left and right. It's possible to look at what happened yesterday as close to a tragedy and also think the man it nearly happened to is a big part of ramping up this rhetoric in the first place.

Agree with every word of this.

Right or left, whenever something happens there are a small majority of absolute asholes who see things like this as an opportunity to post absolute nonsense for their own gain (if being social media famous can be considered as such) in the knowledge that as a society we are so fractured politically now that we are desperate, regardless of side, to believe that "the enemy" is responsible.

Far more likely truth that in a country of 75M+ Democrats and 75M+ Republicans, there are nutjobs on both sides and unfortunately a lot of them have access to guns.

It's a tricky one. He's both got the best record of any English manager at tournaments since Alf Ramsey AND he's arguably underachieved.

Have to say, this has been the closest euros in terms of team quality I've ever seen. The expected underdogs are all playing better than expected and Spain, maybe Germany aside all of the favorites have been utter garbage. Belgium, England, Portugal, France, Italy, Netherlands - all terrible so far.
