Faurlin or Diakete defensive midfield...? 07:52 - Oct 26 with 6682 views | Billy_Kershaw | Seen this discussed a little in other threads. For me, I prefer Diakete in the defensive midfield role. Faurlin is not the quickest or strongest at breaking up counter-attacks. Personally, I think when the opposition break away and they see Diakete ahead of them it slows down the counter-attack because they are intimidated by his strength and speed. The only drawback is Diakete learning when to slide in and to make sure he times it right! This allows Faurlin to do more damage with his intricate passing further upfield... Any thoughts?

Faurlin or Diakete defensive midfield...? on 07:56 - Oct 26 with 5361 views | hoopstilidie | Personally I'd like to see Diakite sitting behind Faurlin and Granero with Taarabt and Hoillett on the wings. Back 4 of Bosingwa, M'Bia, Nelsen and Traore and one of Zamora/Cisse up top. Opportunity to switch Taarabt and Hoillett between the two sides to cause maximum havoc and the substitution of one of Faurlin or Diakite to bring on a second striker if the game calls for it.

Agree pretty much with all of this, particularly in terms of selection. Only slight difference is I may swap samba and Faulin, think samba going forward driving with the ball could be lethal.
Faurlin or Diakete defensive midfield...? on 08:40 - Oct 26 with 5326 views | DylanP | When Diakite is going forward, he is a joy to watch. When Diakite is tackling, he is a red card waiting to happen. No, I don't think Diakite should be used as a defensive midfielder. It exposes his biggest weakness and wastes his biggest strengths. Faurlin is great as a defensive midfielder. He is organized, reliable, unflappable, a strong tackler and a good distributer of the ball.

Faurlin or Diakete defensive midfield...? on 08:46 - Oct 26 with 5314 views | ElHoop | I agree with this. Diakite isn't great at break up - too clumsy. A black Scholes. Let Faurlin break it up and then give it to Diakite and let him tank along.

Yes, yes & thrice yes. Is Faurlin injured? Or this just another one of Hughes' tickerings? | | | | Login to get fewer ads
Faurlin or Diakete defensive midfield...? on 09:32 - Oct 26 with 5268 views | jamois | I think the whole board is going to pretty much agree with all of this. Diakite is a combative central midfielder but perhaps not best as the last line of defence as that's when the desperation tackles could come flying in. Faurlin's judgement is better. But in tandem with Granero getting stuck in too, then I think we've got one hell of a midfield Maggie Thatcher. btw Kevin - your avatar - have you got her number?

PhilmyRs is spot on on my opinion - and I think with very good reason. Yes Faurlin does badly lack pace but with three CMs he can afford to sit deep and therefore not get caught out higher up the pitch (like he did vs West Brom at home last year). He is also the best tackler of the three by far. He is awesome in the tackle. And he can head. He could play a deep Pirlo like role and dictate the tempo from deep with his great short passing. Diakite is a fine athelete but I've seen nothing to suggest he has the positional discipline to play as the shield for the back four - he is also at his best when he rampages forward with the ball at feet. This would be totally wasted if he played defensive midfield (unless he was to regularly sacrifice his deep position, which brings me a back to my first point about him). So for me it HAS to be... Cisse Taarabt Hoilett Granero Diakite Faurlin Of course this would mean Park on the bench...

Faurlin or Diakete defensive midfield...? on 10:40 - Oct 26 with 5191 views | WestbourneR | I'm praying! I really think he is off the pace. He looks lost tbh. Plus he is unfairly keeping Faurlin out of the team. Thing is Hughes has messed up a bit with Park. Yes we needed a utility midfielder as part fo the squad who could fill in for lots of positions. But we needed him to basically sit on the bench until needed. Park clearly can't be put on the bench for various reasons - but most of time, when everyone is fit - he should be on the bench, like he was at Man Utd. Got to say I even think a fit (ahem) Dyer should be ahead of him as a pick for the right hand side.

Agree with that. Dyer did very well against Spurs and a right hand side with him and Bosingwa would give us a very good attacking option, plus Dyer has the defensive capabilites to cover Bosingwa if he's more advanced. Could make for a very exciting partnership. As you allude to though, will they ever both be fit at the same time?

this is the team IMO. But in relation to the original post - if you're talking a purely DM I would go Faurlin cause Diakite, for me, is a conventional CM with ability to run with the ball. All that said, at the moment, if I was drawing up the midfield lineup Diakite would be my first man on in because Granero and Faurlin are similar types of player and cant break from midfield like Samba and that's something I think is critical to a successful midfield in the prem.

Still not sure why Cisse is being written off by everyone. He should be starting every match... Would like to see him up top alone (but not isolated) with Taarabt and Hoillett behind. Granero pulling the strings... Faurlin and Diakete in defensive midfield... SWP can be an impact sub! Sorry had to add that in!

Faurlin or Diakete defensive midfield...? on 14:24 - Oct 26 with 5059 views | BklynRanger | I think Diakite is a good tackler, in fact he's so good that sometimes he has a bit too much belief in it and makes tackles that he just shouldn't attempt. These seem to occur when he's brought on at a time when we're chasing the game or when he's too pumped up. Usually causing him to leave his feet. If he gets and keeps his head right he can close down players and take away attacking space for the opposition like nobody else we have. On the point of him going forward, that seems to work because opposition players aren't quite sure when he's going to do it. I agree with putting Ale in the Pirlo kind of role with Diakite ahead but I think they should be able to rotate during the match. I'd want both of those players to get a real understanding of when one holds and the other goes forward linking up with The Pirate.
Faurlin or Diakete defensive midfield...? on 14:53 - Oct 26 with 5037 views | Billy_Kershaw | Yeah, perhaps on reflection, the answer is "both", but interchanging to confuse the opposition....(but not each other...) I also wonder about bringing in Cisse for Zamora. If we are going to use this formation, including Taarabt and Junior, they will create the chances for Cisse, encouraging intelligent passes along the ground, rather than a little too much hoofing to Zamora, where we can lose possession a little too easily. Maybe I'm being harsh on Bobby, perhaps he hasn't been 100% recently, after his flying start?
