To be fair, "fortunately" was YOUR word of choice!
Facts are that a referee with no prior football league experience had an uneventful game and came it through it with no discredit to himself (although the pen at 1-0 looked soft). The game will serve him well for the future and I expect he'll get more league appointments on the back of it very soon.
I was wrong. I'm very happy to be so. Before the game we had NO IDEA what to expect from the referee because none of us had ever seen him before. So he became a talking point. Not "hysteria". But a talking point.
You could see the gulf in class between the two teams. Is it so unreasonable to be concerned that the same gulf in class might also exist with the referees? More likely is that we got a good one, on a good day.
RAFCBLUE made a reasonable and well researched argument and was called ignorant for their trouble. This kind of thing happens TIME AND TIME AGAIN. It scares off reasonable people and leaves only the clique and the trolls. |

5:50 Saturday after a performance like that negates all negative comments. Good feeling. Opposition not great but as a National League Play-Off team they can't be as bad as we made them look. First comment on the Bromley forum describes us as the Lancashire Barcelona, I'll settle for that  |

Some of the logic of this thread seems very strange.
Eg. "All refs make mistakes" being an argument why having a ref with zero league experience is not a problem.
Eg. Advertising the game is not necessary because "everyone already knows about it anyway".
I'm sure the ref is highly regarded and I hope he has a good game, but I stand by my opinion that he should be blooded in L2 matches, NOT in an FA Cup game. The potential rewards for either side are too high. A league match is just one of 46.
And the reduced ticket prices should have been marketed, surely the intention is to attract people who otherwise wouldn't be going today. I know the marketing discussion has been done to death. Email and poster campaigns cost very little and are a basic of any successful business |

My OP was a general lament for the demise of the Cup and a hope that the players can achieve a (well-earned) glamour tie this year.
The attitude that the FA Cup is a sideshow started in the Premier League and has sadly filtered down to ourselves. At least the Premier have the excuse of prioritising their £100M per year league position. What is our reason? Maybe the defeats to FGR and FCUM haven't helped.
Regionalised rounds 1 and 2 would be effective and easy to initiate. Clubs like ours should petition the FA accordingly.
The reduction in ticket prices is of course welcome. But otherwise the message from the club has been that this game is second-class. And the message from the FA is the same by appointing a non-league referee. |

Interview on the official site: Keith Hill admits the FA Cup was "unimportant" in his first spell at Rochdale, against the priority of winning promotion. Says this has now changed in his second spell.
With reduced ticket prices, closed stands, cut-down programme and non-league referee, I'm not sure anyone else has got the same message.
The salary of the current Staff and Players owes a debt to the past; to Man U in '86, Liverpool '96 and the televised Wolves game in '03. We've had cup success in recent seasons without the reward of a real big-money tie. Let's hope that this year, from such low-key cut-price beginnings, we can make a cup run to remember.

I saw the title of this thread and thought it might be about how a third of the home support were being moved from their favourite stand.
My mistake. According the OP we've missed a trick by not shutting two home stands and moving two thirds of the support.
Maybe having the Main Stand open is too expensive, and we should all just stand by the corner flag. |

There is a strategic viewpoint that you shouldn't do what You most want to do, you should do what your opponent least wants you to do.
Opposition players don't like playing against pacy attacking fullbacks. They don't like playing against a hard working midfield four who track back and don't give them a moments peace. The opposition defence would rather play against one forward instead of two. We have players in the squad of League One Quality who are quite capable of fulfilling all this, yet for some reason we rotate the squad constantly, stick with players who are out of form, play players out of position, everything about our selection and performance is playing into the opposition's hands.
After the "fook all about football" debate, I think we're all now agreed that 13 points from 14 games playing mostly defensive-oriented football is not a situation anyway wants to see. Especially given our stated aim of becoming an "established" L1 club. For me it's time to move Done upfront with either Davies or Andrews, get Rathbone etc back into a hard-working midfield, and really push Raff/Bunney to attack at every opportunity. |

Pretty good going to score twice as many goals as he's had "brief sparks".
Done's first stint at Rochdale led to a Championship move. His second stint led to a League One move. This suggests his first spell could be considered more of a success than his second? |

That post is aggressive rambling nonsense, even by your standards.
Whether you consider Borntogo as having an agenda or not, his basic point was well worth making. Playing for a clean sheet rather than going for 3 points is misguided and invites exactly the kind of game we saw on Saturday. It's also against everything a traditional Keith Hill team stood for.
Do you actually have anything of value to add to this forum? What is your opinion on Rafferty vs Donovan? where would you play Done/ could Davis and Andrews play together? how can we get the best out of Henderson? FFS I'd take a comment about the quality of the hot dogs, at least it would be something constructive.
I see that there were only a couple of posts about the game on Saturday evening, normally a weak performance would have had more discussion. I guess your plan of bullying people into avoiding posting anything negative is really bearing fruit.
And my opinion for what it's worth: Rafferty; Upfront with Davis; No; Play him behind the front two. |

An unusually positive post from me on this one but here goes.
Is it possible that ALL clubs start the season enthusiastic and at peak fitness, regardless of backroom staff and sports science. So in the first few games we don't have any advantage, and it comes down to a straight battle of squads. After a few games, other clubs tail off but we keep going, thus gaining the advantage, which we then maintain through most of the season.
Could be complete crap of course, but it's so rare for me to have a glass-half-full opinion I just HAD to share it. |

Actually it was R17 who got the ball rolling advising people who'd moved away from Rochdale to (quote) fook off, if they dared to denegrate their former home.
I'm happy to see so many people defend their town. For me, a nice lake doesn't make up for years of neglect, notorious estates, crime, poverty, sex scandals and boarded up shops.
I'm shutting up now cos I have no desire to upset people who have a geniune love for their town. Respect to you all. Just maybe once again this forum has shown it has no time for contrary opinion. |

The Barrow/Barcelona thing was clearly tongue-in-cheek but struck a nerve with people who have chosen to live on the outskirts of town for a reason.
The fact that we are situated in beautiful open countryside just makes the state of the town itself even sadder. |

Rochdale IS a shthole though. We make Barrow look like Barcelona. If I managed to escape I'd be pretty smug as well. Unfortunately I'm stuck here because I can't sell my house mainly because, well, because of the first four words of this post.
On topic: this is still the same club who saw the need of Sandy Laners to have a bar facility at half time, to the extent of allowing them to leave the stand and come back (I doubt other clubs allow this). Whatever short term issue happened on Saturday will surely be fixed soon enough. |
