Everton Sack Sean Dyche
at 22:15 10 Jan 2025

Didn't Moyes say that he wanted a return to management but didn't want a relegation fight?

I think he's going to be tempting fate big time going back to Everton having said that!

As if things could not get any worse for Saints

Selling Ramsdale in January would be waving the white flag.

It's the sort of idiotic 'outside the box' thinking that this bunch of muppets might find attractive.

And, yes, there's a certain autistic logic to it: we've going to get relegated so let's cut our losses now.

But football can't work like that. Every team has to try until the final game. It's in the nature of a league. And it's self-respect.

And then there's the 'contract' with the fans. No club can expect support if it is not at least trying to succeed.

I think I'd be asking for my season money back for breach of contract.

Transfer window meeting

They had one plan for staying up - Russell Martin.

They should have sacked him after 8 games and really made an effort to survive.

Instead they stuck with him until we were well adrift and then appointed someone with no PL experiene as a final half-hearted roll of the dice.

Their plan failed and they had/have no Plan B or this season.

Frankly, there is no point in us spending big now.

We'll limp to the end of the season. Get relegated with a laughable points total and Juric will be sacked.

And only then can the Club try to re-group. Hopefully without the current bunch of muppets making the decisions.

Is the multi-club structure leading to less accountability?

Someone with an once of footballing nowse might spot a bargain in a comatose giant.

We've got the infrastructure and fanbase to be a solid PL club.

i guess the essential conflict here is that for us, success is measured by what happens to Saints, whereas for SR it will be the overall success of the group that will be their priority.

And these two things will not always align.

You did also seem to be critical of them for failing to live in peace with their neighbours for 4000 years.

FWIW, it also leaves me cold that the Israeli state is behaving so barbarically. You are right, we would hope that Isreal would do better.

My take is that it's this particular bunch of psychopaths who are responsible. Not Jews, not zionists, not Israel per se. But it is very difficult to maintain these distinction when the support for Isreal from many Jewish people seems without limit and when any criticism of what Isreal is doing is considered to be anti-semitic.

Zionism was a movement for state for Jewish people, and that state was created after WW2. I'm aware of the history.

Rightly or wrongly, it was a done deal long before most of us on here were even born.

I would say that the reasonable view now is that Israel has a right to exist but that it should not be expanding (more that it has already done so) and it should be recognising the rights of its Palestinian neighbour and citizens.

Sounds like you're quite anti-Jewish though. (Which is what 'anti-semitic' usually means.)

Although isn't it true that they got Nathan Jones out quicker than the Board would have done.

Based on the Martin experience, Jones had another 7 games in him at least!

Please read what I said. I am aware of the differences. "...you are getting too close to talking about Jews for my liking."

'too close'.

You could research the history of how the use of 'zionist' as a pejorative term has been used by the far right as shorthand for 'Jewish'. Just like how David Icke talks about lizards. (Is he still doing that, Jelly?)

What is clear is that this is a minefield. Hence my preference for not using the word 'zionist' when we are really talking about Israel.

This Israeli government are behaving abominably. As far as I am concerned they are up there will some of the worst states ever seen in terms of what they are doing and their disregard for Palestinian life.

You're talking about Isreal - the creation and expansion of.

When anyone still talks about Zionism - the aims of which were effectively achieved with the creation of Israel - you are getting too close to talking about Jews for my liking.

I agree. What this Israeli government has done to the people of Gaza is unbelievable.

And I know we are not allowed to make comparisons but their contempt for Palestinian rights and lives is on a par for me with the contempt shown by other regimes historically.

But I do my best not to confuse this Israili government with all Israeli governments, with Jews, and also with 'zionism'.

Why call that a 'Zionist' war.

Why not an Israeli war?

What has happened to the fans?

There's another point here. It isn't just about the supporters. It's about the relationship between the supporters and what's going on on the pitch.

It makes no sense to expect the same level of enouragement from the fans in the ground when the team is 5-0 down, as when the score is 1-1 and the team has the opposition pinned in their own box, pressing for a winner.

Anyone who screams, sings and shouts with the same level of enthusiasm regardless of what's going on on the pitch would rightly be considered a little deranged.

The fans are there and willing to perform - they showed that against West Brom in the play-offs. The atmosphere in the first half against West Ham was also a lot noisier.

But there is a quid pro quo. The team need to provide something (anything) to shout about. And for much of this season they haven't.

'...dumbstruck at how things were panning out with the new man at the helm.'

Exactly this.

Exactly the same 'wtaf is going on?' feeling as during those early Nathan Jones games.

What's better? A yo-yo club or mid-table Championship?

This season makes you realise just how entertaining a proper relegation battle is.

Watching your team barely able to score a goal, let alone win or avoid relegation is a very different sort of horrible.
