The Beatles were a bit crap... 21:18 - Mar 4 with 4177 viewsizlingtonhoop

Everyone has their off moments...

For me, Rubber Soul has two duff'ns.

What Goes On, disjointed drivel.

And the plain nasty Run for Your Life.

Yesterday, annoys me a fair bit too.

Fellow Beatles admirers, which track(s) have you reaching for the skip button, whilst otherwise loving the Fab Four?

I must be the only person on the planet that doesn't like Hey Jude much and it goes on for about 4 business days.

I think Yesterday is a bit overrated as well, it's ok I guess, but nowhere near their best.

Me too. Yesterday is pretty good though.

Another vote for Hey Jude.

Second only to American Pie for overhyped, overlong bore fests.

Suffering since 1978.

Saw and heard Don play a full length 'Pie', at a gig in Liverpool. My word, how such a song could turn into a yawn fest was a shame!

American Pie is a truly great song. Nothing like as repetitive as Hey Jude.

There probably isn't one, it's down to our own personal taste.

You taste food or beer and like or dislike it, you hear music and the same applies.

Agree, mostly.

But I think we can a bit further, and recognise that, regardless of our personal taste, some music has, shall we say, more significance, is a better display of musicianship even, than others? Is Mozart crap because I prefer rock and roll?
Much of the popular music of the 70s and beyond was clearly inspired by the Beatles; it's seems churlish to deny they were pioneers.
Is 'A Day in the Life' a more significant song than, say, 'Shang-a-lang'? I'd say yes. And I'd say the Bay City Rollers was crap, and the Beatles weren't.
So, my thesis is that it's not all just down to taste.

The Bay City Rollers record sales suggest that they were not crap!

Different eras, Heartbreak Hotel, In My Life, Shang -A-Lang, Like A Virgin, Park Life.

Subjective across so many levels. Nostalgia, Trends, Looks, Melody, Riffs, lyrics, a song can transport you back to somewhere euphoric or terrible.

I remember coming back from a nightclub once in the late 90s and my mate who picked us up, drove his car straight into the back of a Ford Orion and totalled his Fiat Uno with us in it. No one seriously injured thankfully, but whenever I hear Return of the Mack, which was playing on the radio at the time... it always reminds me of that.

I'm not saying I wholeheartedly agree, but considering the same year had: White light/White Heat, Lumpy Gravy, Ptooff etc released, I can seen how a case could be made.

I still own 2 out of three of those, never really liked Lumpy Gravy that much but have 2 or 3 Zappa albums and my Ptooof!!! album is a fairly rare Mono recording.

The grass is always greener.

Firstly, a great songwriting partnership with a great back catalogue that changed musical/pop history. However, 1st to Last album ‘63 - ‘70, Final Live performance at Candlestick Park in San Fransisco was on 29th August 1966 which lasted just 33 minutes for 11 songs. Hardly VFM.
After which, Albums which followed and were never played live - Revolver, Sgt Peppers, Magical Mystery Tour, White Album, Yellow Submarine, Abbey Road, Let It Be.
Singles (likewise as a group) - Paperback Writer, Yellow Submarine, Eleanor Rigby, Strawberry Fields Forever, Penny Lane, All You Need Is Love, Hello Goodbye, I Am The Walrus, Magical Mystery Tour, Lady Madonna, Hey Jude, Revolution, ObLaDi ObLaDa, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Get Back, Ballad Of John & Yoko, Come Together, Let It Be, The Long And Winding Road.
There’s plenty of others, whatever your views and favourites.

I guess I’m saying, they were great, but not above all else, they had flaws and over the next 60 years, we’ve moved on.

Music was obviously simpler then and relied on more ingenuity to be relevant and different

Beatles definitely inspired boy bands as the beatles were a glorified boy band for the first couple of years and whatever others think of Take That, Boyzone, Westife, One Direction, JLS, it's a genre of music that is massively successful appealing to teenage and twenty something young ladies.

Obviously not for most on here, but you can see why it appeals.

Tried and tested formula of which the early Beatles epitomised.

As they grew up, so did their productions, they went a bit drug related nonsense on occasions, but they changed it all around and no doubting all of them had talent.

If Lennon had survived, am certain he could have penned half a dozen more all time classics.

It was of it's time and in its time they were the boys.

Massively over hyped. All their early stuff sounds like nursery rhymes. She loves you yeah yeah yeah. We all live in a yellow submarine.

And everything else sounds like acid influenced w@nk.

Powerfully uncool too. I'll take the Stones over them any day.

'Champagne Supernova' just drones on and on for me, and I never saw 'Don't Look Back in Anger' as anything other than dirge.

I liked the Beatles' cover of Oasis', 'I am the Walrus' for some bizarre reason. You could clearly see how the cheeky scousers had ripped off their Mancunian neighbours.

They have some great tracks but I've always prefered the Small Faces.

Ronnie Lane's bass with Stevie Marriot's vocals and heavy sounding guitar appeal to me more, but obviously I like the heavier sound.

However without the Beatles and Sgt. Pepper would there have been a 'Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake'. Maybe, maybe not; you'll have to ask Kenney Jones.

Isn't the difference between the Beatles and modern "boy bands" that they actually wrote, and played their own songs? Feels like a harsh equivalization I've always thought

Yes, also the Beatles were not the best looking chaps....apart from Paul who was dreamy....

Think Gary Barlow and Robbie Williams have penned many between them.

Ronan Keating also, but yes especially lately more about the pretty boys and the production of a tried and tested formula.
