Seeing Two Different Approaches Home & Away ( I Like it) 13:51 - Dec 22 with 1599 viewsNorthantsHoop

Well done Marti and the coaching team, utilising two different approaches to home and away games. At home we are now more expansive and front footed especially in the midfield, like the way Morgan is being used, away from home solid defensively and looking to counter attack. Hopefully the loss of Cook won't disturb the balance too much, but we have really turned a corner after coming back from the international break and what is most pleasing is getting our home form going.

Well, I can only say I hope the Bristol game isn't now a blueprint for our away 'strategy'. 30% possession, a block lower than an anteater's snout, and eight touches in the opponent's box all game doesn't quite do it for me, I'm afraid.

That was particularly hard to watch, still if we get away points any way we can and play at home like we did against knob end (ahem…better opposition in mind), I’ll take it

Don't you want y/our team to play with more pride and, who knows, even a touch of panache, rather than inept numbskulls with an inferiority complex? I know I do - even if we get a few fewer away points as a result.

Just remind me how playing open expansive attractive football has got Southampton this season?

Marti seems to have gone back to basics and become pragmatic to grind out some results given where we were in the league. This would seem to be working. Let's get in a more comfortable position and then open up a bit. Having said all that I felt Bristol were excellent and didn't give us much opportunity. Compare that to the Watford game where I thought we played our best stuff of the season.

Well ideally - of course we all would.

But we aren't good enough to do that. Marti tried that at the start of the season and it didn't work too well.

Ugly away draws and expansive home wins works pretty well for me as a combo...

It worked at Watford, and we could and should have won the game as a consequence. I don't like the 'play football at home and hunker down away' binary, and don't accept it. We were lucky not to lose 2-0 at Bristol anyway, and many more away performances like that, we'll lose most of them. And that's before we get onto aesthetic considerations, which is part of the point of my post.

These next two away games be interesting to see how it goes, will the loss of Cook be difficult to overcome. Sort of feel more confident of 3 points at Swansea, think Norwich will be a lot harder, they will come at us and try and avenge the recent home beating. Rangers not renowned for keeping unbeaten runs going and two away games over the Christmas period could be a tough call. But optimism rules and we should on our current form be a tough nut to crack.

With Cook out, I fear we might lose both of them. Two points would be a decent return.
