The Crown Estates 18:10 - Oct 3 with 1929 views | johnlangy | I've read many times about the fact that the crown estates 'own' (?) the seabed around the UK. I never understood how that worked until now. I've read today that Gwynedd Council has to pay the crown estates £161,000 a year in order for it's residents to have access to their beaches and other seafront facilities. And if Gwynedd has to pay then so do all other Welsh councils including ours. So we have to pay the spongers so we can walk on OUR own beaches. It's like living in medieval Britain, it really is. It is part of a corrupt system that should be binned now along with the royals.

It appears monies paid to the Crown Estate are dived between the Monarchy and the Treasury, the former get 25% while the latter get 75%. What a rip off, Gwynedd (and I suspect all the other authorities with coastlines are paying similar amounts) are paying our own government the lions share of the money so we can access what’s ours. 🤬

So basically 75% of all "Crown Estate" income ends up with the Treasury where it is spent on stuff like the NHS and Defence. That's ignoring the reality that nothing like 25% actually ends up in the Monarchy's hands. I'm a Republican. I think it's absurd in the 21st Century that anyone can be deemed "better" by accident of birth, but the lack of understanding of what this money is and where it goes is crazy.

Posters do not have to agree with you tbh. Working welsh people paying monies to an English royal is certainly worth of comment. Most people would rather spend their money on transport, defence, education and healthcare. No role for any Royal in that process.

No they don't. However, most who don't are complete halfwits. I mean, you've neatly illustrated that by demanding that Crown Estate income go towards transport, defence, education and healthcare when it's already been demonstrated that at least 75%, in reality more than 90% of it already does. Communicating with Welsh Nationalists is like dog training. You hope that 15-20% of it sinks in, but you can't really have any expectation.

I think you are missing the point that there is no role for Royals in the process of taxation in a modern democratic nation. Not sure you are up to the job as a dog trainer.

The Monarchy underpins our constitution . A republic also has a constitution . A monarchy does not need four palaces to function or serve the country They are simply leeches brought up to entitled and are detached from the world ,no matter what sone might think . Andrew is the finest example of why it is morally wrong to continue this Forget the money, the riches, the estates, this is simply immoral. As for dog training,90% of puppy training is retained . It is down to the owners to reinforce and continue the training .

I don't know if you're confusing this with the fact that the Duke of Beaufort 'owns' the Tawe river bed and our council had to pay him £320,000 just for permission to build the new bridge over it when the stadium was being built. Another example of the absolutely corrupt way the UK is being run.

I completely agree with you. Although I would also say there is no role for an extra 36 politicians in Wales when we already have too many and are apparently short of money. The Royal family, Royalty as a whole is an absurd idea in the 21st Century, they should be retired, become private citizens and the Crown Estates run with 100% of the profit going to the treasury. Then open the palaces to the public and run them as living museums.

No it is or was definitely the Crown Estate. I haven't necessarily got a problem with them owning land and the money used for developing it, paid by developers going to the treasury / royal family. Access to the beach by the public is a different story. That's taking the urine.

I have a problem with people who took vaste swathes of land by dint of birth and make fortunes off it at the expense of the vast majority. The paid by developors thing, where do developers get their money from? It doesn't just appear by magic and they develop things to make a profit so that 360k for the riverbed was factored into the invoice. Who paid the invoice?

Most crown estate land is bought as an investment rather than a birthright. If they didn't buy it someone else would. At least crown estate land see's a return to the public purse rather than profits disappearing to an offshore tax haven. It's not perfect, but there are far worse landlords around.

You make some fair points Dr W. Your second para suggests that you know a lot more than,it seems, other posters on this thread. Certainly me anyway. Earlier you said 'I'm a Republican. So why don't you educate us ? And I mean that in an honest way. I'd like to know. And you let yourself down with your first and last paras. If people don't agree with you or don't understand something why don't you explain/persuade rather than insult ?
