The statement just made today in Parliament is the first encouraging development I have seen under the new government. The big plus is that, in addition to an improved redundancy package, there will be an intention to bring back some UK primary steel production to complement the planned electric arc furnaces at Port Talbot and Scunthorpe. I suppose the downside is that the Tata deal does not postpone the closure of the existing blast furnaces, does not reduce the number of lost jobs significantly, and does not push Tata to add a DRI front end to the EAF in the short term. It was a bit rich for the Shadow Business Minister to criticise Labour for this when so little progress had been made by the last government. I will wait with interest to see what those with greater knowledge than me of the plant think. [Post edited 11 Sep 13:02]

I think you'll find that once the grants ran out Companies left Wales also the major employers left Wales years before the Brexit vote. Company's such as Sony , Panasonic , LG Murco , Hotpoint real major employers in Wales all gone with no real replacement which could provide the jobs so much needed. Can you name any Company which you believe `can replicate the number of jobs equal to one Company we've lost? |

The new steelmaking in PT will be massive. There seems to be developments in the glass making sector. Small factories of course but in some ways these are better.

The new steelmaking in PT will be massive. There seems to be developments in the glass making sector. Small factories of course but in some ways these are better.

The investment is massive £1.25 billion. Not exactly child's play. I do not know the workforce, in the low hundreds probably but it will create construction and demolition jobs.

Still not great though, as steel production from scrap puts us very much in the second division and needing to import. Tata has just built a new coke blast furnace in India (one of the largest there), and is building a directly reduced iron plant (fueled by hydrogen) to complement their EAF in the Netherlands (so maintaining virgin steel making capability there). I can't help thinking we should have played our cards better in terms of the subsidy offer, and perhaps been willing to invest a bit more to get our own hydrogen DRI furnace at Port Talbot.
Some would say we would still need to import ore, but the only reason we don't mine the deposits we have is that it is cheaper to buy abroad. In a world where that became difficult we still have the strategic asset on our own territory though. | | | |

Ending free trade with Europe including RoI was a massive change. Boris told us jobs would be coming from south east Asia and Americas. He was wrong. The Sennedd are left carrying Boris's illegitimate baby as he on a lecture tour in the USA .
