It shouldn't matter what someone posts on social media unless it's illegal, if they are not representing their employer on that platform, whether it's Sugar, Lineker, or Clarkson. Does anyone really regard Lineker as a spokesperson for the BbC when he is coming out with his stuff on Twitter? |  |

I think it's more to do with expressing views on social media which could affect his ability to do his job for the BBC with impartiality
For instance, supposing a Premier League footballer had expressed support for the government policy (there will be some who do, but keep it to themselves). If that player performed in a way that attracted comment on MOTD, could Lineker's comments be made entirely free of bias against the player because of his views?
This is why the argument that the social media output of only current affairs broadcasters should come within the BBC impartiality guidelines doesn't work. A scathing comment by Lineker could have an effect on that player's career

20 minutes is all that's left when you strip out the endless action replays, shots of the crowd, the manager doing his nut, interviews with players and managers followed by a studio discussion of a game you've barely seen.

If and it's a big if, Lineker or indeed any other pundit or commentator with similar views to him behaved in such a way, then absolutely the BBC would have the right, in fact duty to censor that pundit. There have been a number of footballers who have in their public lives done some or been accused of doing things that are not right, to my knowledge Lineker has not nor any of his colleagues treated any of those footballers negatively in their punditry.
I am also sure their will be footballers who support the Tories , government and views that Lineker stands against. Again to my knowledge Lineker has not been anything but professional in his views on their football abilities. I honestly believe that Lineker is always totally professional in his role with the BBC, and knows he has to be, because of his views he expresses on his social media platforms. Even if you were right about Lineker's impartiality when hosting MOTD, the principle that i invoked still applies
Where Lineker might be aware of avoiding a potentially biased comment, others may not. Unconscious bias is a thing, and if the BBC allowed one individual to conduct his social media in the way Lineker does, others might be encouraged to do so who may not be (as you believe) as impartial in his job role as Lineker
Hence, the BBC are right to suspend him, pending further discussions, or they leave themselves open to problems in the future [Post edited 11 Mar 2023 21:35]

My issue is MOTD is crap in the current format.
But, Lineker is paid £1.35m from the public purse and has expressed an extreme view of one government policy, stopping short of calling them nazis. He has no mandate to do so.

Don't forget this is not new territory for Lineker. He has previously been warned by the BBC about his social media output, but could not contain himself. Effectively, that warning was a yellow card, now followed by a red.

Yes they have, but never to my knowledge has there been cases of bias against or in favour of a player because of their political beliefs or party sympathies.
Yes he should resign, but really should never have been given the job in the first place. Such appointments have to be politically neutral, and be as "white as white" as possible, with obvious good knowledge of public service broadcasting. This should be the case for the heads of News departments and other departments involved in politics within the BBC.
