That’s what I thought about 2 other top Southampton boxers, Joe Pigford and Ryan Garner, both seem to struggle getting the right matches despite beating everyone they face, In Pigford’s case almost always by KO

Barney-Smith has no such problem with Frank Warren backing him.

Is he any relation to Matthew Barney who won the Super Middleweight title in 2003 in Portsmouth and nearly started a riot
I guess it's possible. Who could forget that night when Pompey fans, led by John Petersfield Westwood, packed the Mountbatten Centre to see their hero Tony Oakey fight against a Saints fan sent there at 48 hours notice, supposedly as a lamb to the slaughter - tickets were sold out before Barney was even announced as a late replacement - only to see the Saints fan win. Barney later lost on points to the great Carl Froch but he'll always be remembered for humiliiating Pompey's 'world champion' in his own backyard.

He's on BT Sport Fight Night again tonight.
Missed that last night Dirk, only saw the later fights.
Saw the Pigford fight the other week at Bournemouth (on tv), he was something like 20 unbeaten, favourite to win and got battered. What happened? Up in class?

Barney-Smith won comfortably on points but he was up against a much older, more experienced Mexican fighter, who wasn't going to be knocked out. He's got a lot to learn and is still a long way off a title fight.
As for Pigford, he's had a good unbeaten run but I guess he found his level. He'll probably need to reset his career with an easier opponent next time.
