Scrap the ineffective Senedd-Welsh Assembly on 13:28 - Jun 24 by BarrySwan | Seems a touch bizarre mentioning EU subsidies. And at the same time proclaiming that an independent Wales for some reason will miraculously suddenly blossom into a very profitable commercial organisation, all of a sudden requiring none of the aforementioned subsidies that remainiacs were whining about benefitting Wales for so long in the past and that we couldn't do without. Presumably you've forgotten about Ireland having to go cap in hand to the UK and the rest of Europe a couple of years ago despite decades of being a subsidy junkie off the back of UK and Welsh taxpayers and other net contributors to the EU . No doubt because they were doing so well. Scrap the Bay of Plenty ( for its occupants ) now. [Post edited 24 Jun 2020 13:29]

Well ....as we are saving so much money by leaving the EU then why would Westmonster not replace it fully, even add in more money ? Our Brexit dividend if you like ? Do you understand why the richer parts of Europe help the poorer parts ? Its not charity. The investment is to create new prosperity which then creates new markets for the rich to sell into. Thats on top of the human aspects. Helping others in need, helps everyone. Helping create a newly prosperous Ireland is a good thing to do, not a bad thing to do. I hope this helps you understand more.

I've been a hydrologist for about half of my career so far, about 10 years. I can't believe anyone thinks Wales can make any money by selling water. Unless this is a joke I should have charged more. Also it looks like Drakefords championed return to school plan was announced before agreement with the unions, I was wondering why I had a text from my daughters school basically saying to ignore it. On a side note, does anyone have any idea what the R is in Wales over the last week or so?

This was the latest I have seen a couple of days ago In response, it was confirmed that the most recent R rate in Wales is estimated between 0.7 and 1.0 - with a central estimate of 0.9. However this is probably using figures a couple of weeks ago. The current figure is probably higher due to the figure in North Wales and might have a higher range with South Wales being so low and North Wales much higher.

Ok thanks for that, I understand now. So what you're saying is that a country just off the coast of GB is unable to support itself despite many many many financial handouts from other countries including ourselves during a 100 years of independence? And yet you assert quite stridently that a country such as ours with a basket case economy run by a bunch of incompetent Labour Party fools who have dragged Wales even further down every socio and economic field since taking the helm 20 odd years ago is guaranteed to become a tiger economy. Perhaps we could start with Ireland handing back some of the £millions that the UK taxpayer has handed over to it over the years to kickstart this economic miracle and see how that works before going the whole hog. Ireland have been repaying their loan on time, with interest. And it’s tiny compared to the cost of Brexit so far. Minuscule - less than 3% of the Brexit cost so far, and less than 1.5% of the forecast Brexit cost by the end of this year. Countries use foreign borrowing all the time, it’s normal practice. In fact the UK has the second highest level of sovereign debt in the world after the US, well above Ireland’s. Perhaps we could start with handing back some of the £billions that foreign tax payers have handed to us over the years to kickstart our economic miracle and see how that goes first?

Erm £millions of pounds of EU grants over decades are not loans that Ireland are repaying. The loans you are referring to are the bailout when its economy failed last time despite all the free money already handed out to Ireland by UK and other EU taxpayers over the years which isn't repayable. So nice to wrap a timeline around this one .... 1976 - end of grammar schools with introduction of the comprehensive education system 1999 - Welsh Assembly govt starts Therefore the devolved govt did not get rid of grammar schooling in wales. An indy wales must major on education. If things need to change to deliver that, then we should look at it. [Post edited 25 Jun 2020 19:31]

So since 1999 we have watched education in our country diminish not improve under the Senedd which was my not a very well explained point i admit. We used to have an amazing educational system including Technical Colleges but now the kids are taught to pass a syllabus to meet table requirements limiting the able students, some of whom are then asked to sit and help a student to lift grades. So if Independence is to lure voters Dickford and his ilk need to improve exponentially by ditching our shite system and reverting to what was good for him and our Minister of Education.

Mainly because grammar schools results were better than comprehensive. Grammar schools actually increased social mobility with 50% of pupils in Swansea in the 1960s coming from council estates.

I call bollox. Education is about all our kids. 100 per cent go to Comps. Streams for different abilities within the school. Movement between streams important as people develop at different times. Awful to brand a child a failure at 11 for failing the old 11 plus exam. Big benefits from all the kids in an area going to school together. Builds life long friendships. Nobody under 65 would even remember the concept. Get in the bin.

I believe education should be stretching not dumbing down to the lowest level which is what the comprehensive system had led to. Unfortunately children now have to go to local schools no matter how bad they are. Travelling to other schools get people to mix with other groups of people true socialism. Middle class people can afford to move home to be nearer to better schools giving their children a better chance in life. Sadly the less well off do not have this option resulting in their children suffering.

Firstly the R rate is from 2 weeks ago and the rate has gone upwards since. As for the figures in Wales maybe you should look at the detail and not just look at the headline figures. Yesterday's figures. They show 51 of these cases were in Wrexham and a further 35 were an unknown location. These unknown locations have only started since the 2 outbreaks in North Wales have happened and again highly likely relate to the instances in factories in Llangefni and more likely Wrexham and are probably eastern europeans working in this factories so 86 of the 125 cases were related to 2 factories. 2 were also resident out side of Wales. What the figure shows is that in South, Mid and West Wales there was a total of 21 cases from the severn bridge to the pembrokeshire beaches and from the South Wales coast to places like Machynlleth and Welshpool. Swansea Bay Health Board had 2 cases Aneurin Bevan 1, Cwm Taf 4 Hywel Dda 2 Powys 0 and Cardiff and the Vale 12. Outside of Cardiff and the vale the whole area had 9 cases. Taking into account all of these cases and the relevant population the actual rate in 3/4 of Wales was 21X66.4/2.42 553. Including all the Noth Wales cases other than Wrexham there was 37 case and the actual rate for well over 90% was 37X66.4/2.52 792. So the equivalent cases throughout nearly all of Wales was far lower than the UK figure yesterday of 1118. The higher Welsh figure will continue until the testing and reporting of results in these 2 factories is complete and then you will see the Welsh figure is lower than the daily figures as it was before the outbreak. As examples the figures for 3 days before the outbreak showed Wales had 48, 31 and 25 and this at the population rate would equate to 996, 643 and 519. These are all lower than the respective figures for the UK. As Lisa likes to point out the Wales figure throughout the pandemic is higher than the UK figure. These figures show the decline in Wales is far greater than in England largely due to the stay local advice. The UK figures actually make the English figures look good due to including the lower Welsh, Scottish and Northern Ireland figures.

You’ve stripped out the worst outbreaks of cases in Wales and then left them in the UK numbers of 1118 ? The UK numbers also contain isolated outbreaks in other factories in Yorkshire, Leicestershire etc. It’s almost as if you’re distorting figures...
