I didn’t think he did particularly much more than should be expected of him. Half tidy that’s all. Grimes was as good, without the hype, probably better over the 90.

Would he suit us- yes.

Was tonight performance exaggerated due to the nature of the transfer- yes.

He done the simple things well but was hardly 'all that '

I thought Grimes gave the ball away too much personally.

Wouldn’t mind seeing if the stats backs up by argument, happily be proved wrong.

No great shakes at all. And not worth the money.

The single only reason he's getting a mention is because of the summers circumstances.

Byers and Grimes every bit as good.

Thanks for your observations HJ 😉👍

Agreed. Mirrored a typical Leon performance . We missed a golden opportunity there but onwards and upwards. Really proud of the youngsters out there tonight. Much more experienced Swansea teams have bottled it up there in the past. Well done lads.

Yeah I have too.

98% pass accuracy.

And no, he wasn’t. Despite having yet another good performance, so well done to Grimes on that front.

So therefore he had a better game? Okay.

He was neat and tidy, that’s all. Didn’t like that we didn’t let him dictate so he disappeared for 30 mins of the first half. Seriously nothing special.

Without trying to come across as slagging Grimes off, because I’m not, all of the players did well today. What are you basing your opinion on Grimes being the best midfielder on the park on the park on then?

You think I should base it on pass stats, yeah? Grimes has started the season on the face of adversity and anyone who can’t see that he is rising to the challenge is visually challenged. Skilful, dynamic midfielder who will, along with Celina, will start influencing games in our favour. Tried to force it today in very unfamiliar surroundings and deserving of a lot of credit. It’s not as if he had Joe Allen beside him.

It’s obvious you’re not equipped to understand.

They’re different players in different teams, apples and oranges. You’ve got a stiffy for Woods.

Grimes had a fullback and an U23 alongside him. He was exceptional in the circumstances.

I thought he broke up play, kept them ticking over in midfield and gave Allen etc the licence to press further up the pitch. I was very impressed.

Leon made a career out of doing that, obviously at the higher level but from the little I have seen of him, and the opinions I’ve seen of not just Brentford/Stoke fans but opposing supporters, I think he has a chance.

Our boys were superb tonight though and left everything out there. I’m sick as a pig over that goal, robbed our young squad out of a priceless point.

You obviously know your football mate.

It’s lost to many on PS unfortunately.

The worst part about this season is with a few additions we’d have a good go at this league.

Yes, they are different players, who are there to do different jobs, both played well, but Woods was better. As he should have been in the circumstances.

Nothing about having a "stiffy" for Woods, he's a good player who did what was asked of him yesterday. If I have a stiffy for Woods, Leon, who you probably chase about in the street asking for selfies with, as you seem the type, is walking around like a German porn star over him today.

Can't educate pork I'm afraid.

Morning!

Still don't get it then? Never mind. I thought you almost grasped it when you realised they are different players in different roles, therefor Woods's pass stats cant be used to prove he had a better game, but then you reverted to type.....

Woods was neat and tidy, but I wouldn't say he was busy. Joe Allen, whilst not having a great game, was the busier of the two, but Woods probably gave the ball away less.

I think Woods is one of those players, like Leon, who is easier to understand watching from inside the stadium. Seeing the 'bigger picture' instead of just what the camera happens to be pointing at is important with players like this as they tend to do things that the cameras don't always cover.

I thought Grimes had a decent game. I was worried that he would burn out as he was offering himself all over the park at one stage. He knew that Naughton couldn't comfortably go looking for the ball (more of a protector or defence than a link between defence and midfield) so it was all down to him. I just wish Grimes was a little more comfortable with his right foot as it would help him place his passes a hell of a lot better at times (ie in front of the player he's passing to, not behind). The same can be said of most left-footers though.

It was so noticeable that Potter had made the players force the ball wide as quickly as possible as he knew we'd lose the battle in the centre of the park. It worked so well in the first half and really thought we were going to win it.

A good mate of mine's a Stoke fan and was texting me most of the evening. The two player she thought were going to damage us were Byers and Dan James.....so huge credit to those two too.

I've followed the U23s closely for a few years now and was so proud of them last night but can't even imagine how Cameron Toshacks and Gary Richards feel!

As others have said, we're just a few signings from a play off spot but there's more chance of us losing half a dozen in the window instead.

Poll: Simple...would you want Leon in the squad right now, if he was available?

Let’s remember that grimes was playing in a midfield thrown together in a couple of days through injury with no targetman to aim at and 3 forwards who’ve hardly played. All things considered he’s been superb the last 3 games. Hopefully over the next few weeks we’ll have a bit more luck with injuries and see a settled midfield with Fer, Grimes and Celina.

*taking nothing away from Byers and Naughton who I thought were excellent.

You have yet to give me any sort of reason how you came to the conclusion Grimes had a better game, other than he has "faced adversity", and will "start to turn games in our favour", with not one mention on the subject of last nights game, which the whole thread is about.

You make it up as you go along, and haven't really got the slightest clue what you're on about, and never have done.

A thread on Ryan Woods was always going to bring out the usual suspects and you haven't disappointed in this thread, Blaine. You have gone out on a limb ever since we were linked to him so you feel his performance was some kind of vindication. Others like Bonymine were going to chip in because they were able to turn any sort of opinion or viewpoint against the Club.

All very predictable.

But taking away the Summers interest from us and the pre match chat about he could have been ours etc, he had nothing more than a decent showing.

He rarely moved from the safest position on the park but when he did he looked like a fish out of water.

Did I want him, yes, the hype, the other fans praise for him during the close season, lots of things.... But do I think he's worth a huge chunk of what would be our seasons transfer spending, then no, and I'm glad I've had the best chance ever to properly evaluate that decision.

I would say it's highly likely we'll have 4 to 6m to spend on a player come January, if we were willing to go, say 5m for Woods in the Summer, and knowing what we do about our squad now, I don't think he's anything better than what we've got. Carroll could sit there all game and get a 94% completion rate, because Woods doesn't get stuck in, hasn't got a range of passing and offensively he's a dead duck.

I'd say we called this one right, whether that was by luck or judgement, there's nothing that special about him to be blowing a huge chunk of our budget on.

Grimes, superb and you can see what a run of games is doing for him, Naughts as cover in the middle, a real serious understudy. And Byers, who I was hugely impressed by, and couldn't understand why he went off, was another who's put himself right into contention for the rest of the season. All played well yesterday and with Fulton and Fer to come back all is not as bad, far from it, as too many want to make out.

As much as I dislike Joe Allen at the moment, finding him an ungrateful, snidey Dick, well he run the Stoke midfield, not Woods. If there was any man of the match on their side it was him.

My advice to anyone is watch the game and draw your own conclusions, not listen to pathetic pundits who have to think on the spot and can't see the 'Woods' for the trees.

You're all out of time....the past was yours but the future's mine.

I thought Grimes had a good game and didn't do much wrong. Yeah he gave the ball away a few times but he's still learning and has a long way to go. Played out of position though? A few starts. Hopefully given the chance he will continue to improve! And maybe even reach the potential he seemed to have a few years ago. I hope he does!

Woods. I thought he played quite well. No agenda here just watched the game with an open mind. He reminded me of Leon in the way he moved the ball, did the simple things, aggressive and won the ball back plenty of times. Who was better Grimes or Woods. I'd have to say Woods based on last night, but that is one game. That won't suite those trying to make a case for Grimes.

It's funny that those that claim that and other oddities always attempt to make a case based on...not much and a set of excuses. Just look at these posts, in this thread. But they don't consider equally similar reasons for properly assessing the performance of our opposition or their players. EG Woods, and Stoke in general. They've changed the way they play and much like us it will take time as their players get used to their new system and team mates.

Perhaps in time Grimes will develop into a better player than Woods? But, i think he's a different type of player. Whereas Woods is a deeper player, i think Grimes would be better suited further up the pitch.

I said he played well and looked a quality prospect, not once on this thread have I made a dig at the club, a part from one comment, which you may have misinterpreted as one, that he would look even better in our team. That's because he would. Stoke's supporters were going ballistic at times last night because they wanted to play more direct. He would suit out style better, Potter knew that. We didn't sign him, that's fine, if we couldn't afford, move on. Fact is he is a very good player and had a fine game last night which is what the discussion on the thread was about.

Trust me, I know more about football than have to listen to pundits views, or your views for that matter to make a decision on who I rate / don't rate. I'll happily discuss football with anyone and realise not everyone has the same view, just like ourselves last year in regards to Tom Carroll for example.

I thought Grimes had a good game, I thought the whole team played well and it wasn't one player from our lot who should be down about their performances. I put numerous times on the match thread I thought as a whole we were outstanding yesterday.

I have no viewpoints against the club, I have viewpoints against Huw Jenkins and the sell outs, they are not the club.

""It's funny that those that claim that and other oddities always attempt to make a case based on...not much and a set of excuses""

Well that, and the actual facts of the game...

Woods made 2 tackles and 2 interceptions.
Joe Allen made 4 tackles and 4 interceptions
Grimes made 2 tackles and 1 interception, but was also involved a lot more in the wider central midfield duties and not just sitting on the half way line waiting for it to come to him.
