Match thread: Walsall on 17:18 - Jan 2 with 3597 views | Shun | A good result against a much better side than the one we beat 4-0 at Spotland. Walsall were running rings around us for the first fifteen minutes and should've scored at least one of their chances. After that Hill switched Henderson into midfield and put Rathbone on the wing. That's the way it stayed until the end and it worked, because we played better after that, just shading the first half. In the second half Walsall again started the better side and up until our second goal I thought they were worthy of a point. Excellent work by McGahey for the goal. There's nothing better in the world of football than seeing Joe Thompson score for Rochdale, he looks like a child on Christmas morning, and his little dance was so adorable! After this goal there was only one side going to score more and we took complete control of the match. Overall it was a good result but I don't think we quite deserved a 2-0 win. Walsall played well and had plenty of chances, but the majority of them were sent high into the stands. Their kit is proper mint though. Rathbone again was my man of the match. He perhaps needed a rest towards the end of the game but still kept on running! McGahey performed well when he came on too. Bunney could prove a worry. He tried to play on but fell to the floor minutes later and had to limp off.

How often during the years of being crap did we suffer the same fate - taking games to high-flying opponents, seeming to be on top but conceding when it mattered and coming out with nothing Roles are now reversed

Match thread: Walsall on 19:16 - Jan 2 with 2740 views | Daley_Lama | 2 saves by Logan and the most glaring of misses of an open net had me worried in the first 15 minutes. After that, I thought we took more and more control of the game, especially in the second half where lots of chances to create goal chances but mostly the final pass went astray. Logan my man of the match for the two saves and one late tip over. Could have picked anybody really. First goal looked like it hit Hendo and went in but will wait to see on TV, [Edit: Just seen it, totally wrong, was a smart finish by Hendo] second goal was great play by McGahey. Walsall thought they get the worst rub of the referee but I think they were slightly blinkered. They even went mad when he blew up for half time! [Post edited 2 Jan 2017 19:18]

Did the ref just go off the reaction of the Walsall players to (rightly) disallow the handball goal? Seemed like he'd already checked with his assistants

He was knackered at 70 mins, but was left on. Rathbone MOM for me he really does give 100% effort every moment. Their strikers were woeful, but their manager said Dale were worthy winners, and he is right

If we were it must have happened in the first 13 minutes because Walsall did jack all after I arrived, as confirmed by their manager: http://www.saddlers.co.uk/news/article/2016-17/whitney-we-were-beaten-by-the-bet [Post edited 2 Jan 2017 20:19]

Match thread: Walsall on 20:55 - Jan 2 with 2021 views | ColDale | Thought the home side had two decent spells. The first was at the start of the game when it looked like we'd been out on NYE. They were quicker to the ball than we were for the first ten to fifteen minutes and they'll never have a better chance than that open goal. The second was following the handball goal which seemed to kickstart them into action for a bit. Aside from that, we were head and shoulders above them and they should be thankful we rested Davies for the day as we could have scored a hatful. It completely reinforced what I posted the other day that one day everything will just click and we'll score goals for fun. Looking at the results, people probably think we are already doing that. Rathbone has took us to a whole new level, and I do hope his one year deal has the usual clause for a twelve month extension. We are fortunate that he comes from a footballing family, and equally he has been fortunate to come to a club that nurtures young talent like we do. Our attacking play was mesmerising. Teams just cannot live with us and our passing makes us like a footballing Harlem Globetrotters. Even balls that have "hit into Row Z" written all over it and kept inside the touchline and chased down. We don't give opponents a second and there will be a lot of sore legs in the Walsall camp tomorrow. 45 points is something else - we only got 38 in the whole of 2011-12. 29 more points from 21 games is very achievable but to pinch a phrase from elsewhere, let's just enjoy the ride for now. Its brilliant stuff and the next game can never come quick enough right now.

Davies looked like he'd picked up a knock/strain against Shrewsbury that might keep him out for a week or so, including the Barrow game, so was surprised to see him named on the bench Did he look fully recovered when he came on?

was only on a few mins so was hard to judge. Hilly seems to be being very careful with his fitness and seems loathe to give him ninety minutes. Its obviously working and we have a squad that can handle this.

"Some managers just fit certain clubs but Keith Hill is the best manager in league one pound for pound as Rochdale's wage budget is lower than what Bury pay out. Just look at the league table." Hard to disagree there xD

I laughed at that too. 1. Walsall fans pair us up with big bury in a knee jerk way. 2. Even Walsall fans know big bury are splashing the cash for nowt. 3. He should have posted "as most teams in League One's wage budget is lower than what Bury pay out. Certainly Walsall and us. Bottom 4 budget. Arf!!
