Leave the deluded defend our useless Welsh Parliament, standards are plummeting across all of our public services. The one question the Nationalists never answer is how they will raise the money to become a functioning democracy. |

Scrap the ineffective Senedd-Welsh Assembly on 16:32 - Jun 19 by Highjack | I think this whole pandemic has been good for the welsh government. It’s the first time probably since it’s inception that it’s been front and centre. It’s always been content to just operate in the background, not really stick their head above the parapet. More people are now aware that they exist, more aware of who some of the players are and also the fact that it is the welsh government and not Westminster that is in charge of setting rules on certain issues. |
There is a lot of truth in that post.

Scrap the ineffective Senedd-Welsh Assembly on 12:03 - Jun 19 by LeonWasGod | Far too simplistic. You can't explain a pattern of infection/deaths by a single demographic characteristic. The impact of the virus depends on a complex interplay of a whole load of factors, of which ethinicity is but one. And it isn't anywhere near important as the response to limit the spread of the disease as shown by countless other countires worldwide who have done much better than the UK irrespective of the ethnicity makeup of their peoples. If SE Asian heritage was the controlling factor you would have expected that region to be decimiate - but it hasn't been and quite the opposite. Eg Thailand who was the first country to report a case outside China, but responded hard and fast - https://www.nationalgeographic.com/history/2020/06/look-inside-thailand-prevente All the countries who got a handle on Covid introduced strict measures to limit the spread of the disease, without exception. It's the standard, proven response to a pandemic. Our slightly longer and stricter lockdown in Wales will have helped, as too turning people around who were travelling to Wales from England. It won't have been as effective as a strict border closure, but was probably the next best thing allowable in our particular political climate. All UK countries have done badly relatively to many other countries, as we're all closely tied in to the UK as a whole. Within the limitations that we've had to work I think teh WG has done a fairly decent job realtive to Westminster (as have all devolved regions). They've certainly been much more grown up in their approach compared to Westminster. |
Given you mention not taking a simplistic view, I was surprised by your comment ... ‘If SE Asian heritage was the controlling factor you would have expected that region to be decimiate - but it hasn't been and quite the opposite. Eg Thailand who was the first country to report a case outside China, but responded hard and fast - https://www.nationalgeographic.com/history/2020/06/look-inside-thailand-prevente ’ Of course it seems there were cases in Europe long before any cases were generally reported. But the real point being, there are considerable factors that may impact South Asian ethnicity people living in this country, that would not be a factor if they lived in South Asia. For example low vitamin D has been strongly linked with a high incidence of poor outcomes. The protection darker skin provides combined with our weaker skin is potentially a causative effect of this. Different diet may be another. Or a combination of genetic and other factors. As you point out yourself, it is not simple, so simplistic conclusions should not be drawn.

Scrap the ineffective Senedd-Welsh Assembly on 21:49 - Jun 19 with 2992 views | Catullus | Ah yes Wales, a socialist utopia with a hard border between us and our biggest trading partner. A country that the indy nats/republicans hope will join the EU but can't accept that most of us voted to leave and rejoining could take a very long time. Indy support has risen sharply but there is still more support for abolishing devolution. I'll give you some things, we wouldn't have to pay for some stuff but instead we'd need to find vastly more money to build the infrastructre we need to have a chance at success. True we wouldn't need an armed forces, or Trident (but I'm for scrapping that anyway) and we wouldn't be paying for Royalty and no more House of Lords to moan about either but I wonder what our new independent National Government would want to put into place, what extra political machinery they'd plan on, maybe just go ahead with the current idea of increasing the AM's? Maybe we are in the frying pan but it's still safer than the fire.

I'm pretty certain that Wales Gdp per capita puts us at a similar level to Belarus. Why on earth would anyone want to put us at that level when we are currently part of one of the biggest economies in the world? We have absolutely no resources to make up the short fall that we'd lose by gaining independence from the rest of the uk. Can someone tell me a single reason how we'd benefit from independence?

We generate approx. £3billion in tax revenue...and we have approx.£17billion of public money spent here. Independence would be a disaster for this country.

Its the current uk set up that has created this situation. You do understand that dont you ? Making Wales more prosperous is a key part of Indy Wales. Thank you for signing up to Indy Wales. As john has proven many times, your figures are total bollox though. Businesses such as Tesco operate successfully in Wales but their HQ is in England hence their tax paid does not reflect the profits made from them doing business here in Wales. Many companies like this. UK wealth is not shared with Wales. Thats why the EU awarded Wales the structural funding year after year. The profits from welsh coal should have ensured our future prosperity. Go extract the arab oil and take the profits elsewhere and see what happens. Our communities have been left to rot. Enough.

Scrap the ineffective Senedd-Welsh Assembly on 09:39 - Jun 20 with 2847 views | Dr_Winston | Nearly 400,000 people in Wales work in the public sector out of a total workforce of about 1.5m. I'll take the 400,000 figure at face value because I haven't checked. As regards DVLA. The actual number these days is about 3000 as far as i'm aware. But the logic remains. We wouldn't need 3000 people in DVLA to do the work needed just for Welsh drivers. We'd need about 5% being simplistic about it. That's 150 out of 3000. On the other hand there are millions of Civil Servants based in England, mostly London and the South East, who do work for the whole of the UK (similar to DVLA). And about 5% of them do work that applies to Wales. So if 95% of DVLA jobs were moved to England then 5% of jobs based in all those different departments in England would move to Wales. Simple logistics would tell you that that couldn't be done from one day to the next. What would happen in reality, i'd imagine, is that from day one the status quo would apply. The Governments would come to an agreement that the transition would happen over time as departments are reorganised.
