Targett Target For Newcastle ! Monday, 11th Jul 2016 09:00 Matt Targett is being chased by Championship club Newcastle United according to reports in the North East, but will Saints want to let him go.
According to reports coming out of St Mary's after the departure of Ronald Koeman, Matt Targett was not a favourite of the Dutch manager who is alleged to have bawled him out in front of the rest of the squad, an event that didn't impress his team mates.
If Koeman had stayed that could have made him a prime candidate for a move out of St Mary's, however with a new manager in place it is likely that both Saints and Targett himself will reject the Geordie overtones.
The fee being quoted is also far less than Saints would be looking for at £5 million, Targett has shown he has what it takes to be a Premier League player when called upon and is likely to be used a lot more this coming season under Claude Puel than he was in the second half of the last under Koeman.

Isn't he our second choice left back. If so he won't be going anywhere. It would be crazy

I think he has good potential. I hope he has not had his head turned by press comment that the new manager is keen to bring a new full back in from his French connections. Did not know that Koeman had given him a dressing down in front of his ream mates, as there was a period last year when he had a good spell in the first team depending on what formation played. Hope we hold on to him.

Imo amongst our best performances last season were games when Bertrand and Targett played on the left. At least Targett wont be going to join Everton, I bet he was delighted when RK jumped ship.

Agree Highfield, as a left side pair thy looked very good. If story of RK is correct one more reason to be glad for his departure to be viewed as a good thing.,

Down to the lad himself although the report I saw was alongside a statement that there were wage 'differences'.We need back-up so I can't see the point in selling him for £5m then paying it out for another. He's also growing into quite a large 'unit' so my opinion on his potential has also improved lately.

I agree with RednWight that if a new back-up left back is coming in then a Targett loan would be best. Even if Bertrand doesn't go this summer it won't be long before he is being "linked" and then the inevitable "cash in" soon afterwards.

I agree that some our best performance last season were when Targett was playing in front of Bertrand. I don't think Targett has the positional sense or the natural pace to play on his own at left back, but he could be really effective with a quicker defender behind him. We would be crazy to let him go without giving him a proper chance in the team - especially now that we have got a manager who will actually give him a fair deal, unlike Koeman.
