Great to catch you Nathan, and just in time... If you drop me a DM with details, I'll get £30 to you asap! Good luck for this season, we have had double winners before.

This Sky deal?
at 17:43 16 Aug 2024

Hmm, I'm not sure that is so:

Old red button: one camera, one (dismally unengaged, under-prepped, wiki page open on phone) commentator, no replays (old school: go for a wee, miss a goal, too bad).

SSP+: Multiple angles, two commentators, one of whom may actually have seen a football match before and one who isn't Andy Hinchcliffe, replays of key incidents.

Far from brilliant, but it is a huge step up in quality - add Gary Neville having a pop at Granit Xhaka and Jamie Mackie in the studio, and you're almost at BSB Squarial standard...

I have renewed this league for this season; existing subscribers will have rolled over, the join code for any newbies is 99haqo - all welcome.

I will again be offering the winner an AOF t-shirt of their choice (Stanley, obvs though). Or the cash.

Speaking of which, there is something of a history of winners not sticking around to collect their prize (paging Nathan Mac with Thruxton Slapstick) - as in previous years, I will donate unclaimed winnings to charity (top LR regular Steve Ryder's Brain Tumour Research fundraiser - excuse the plug - https://www.justgiving.com/page/steven-ryder-1722442958493 ).

Good luck all. Sticky for a day or two, please Clive? Thanks!

Good, but they did charge fees for QPR (though in general they don't). As long as you don't 'allow offers', which froze you out from selling to anyone else but was non-binding on the buyer..?!?

There is a Facebook group for face-value sales, if anyone is interested:

Next England Manager
at 13:56 16 Jul 2024

Exactly, it is this sort of thinking, coupled with doggedly picking only English players, that has held England back all this time...

Joking of course, but the serious point is, for example, how many English managers have won the Premier League? How many English Premier League managers even are there (is it 3?).

I can't say I'm keen on ECB cricket-style three-overs-at-Arundel to qualify, then can you open for us at the Gabba, but the FA must know that the current system isn't going to throw up another Venables by magic, it has barely churned out a Sean Dyche.

FFL winner finally announced
at 11:37 14 Jul 2024

Apologies for this, busy moving house (two houses, in fact), but on a nice Covid-induced break at the mo, so...

Belated congratulations to LFW Fantasy League winner, Nathan McAllister and his team Thruxton Slapstick.

It wasn't even close in the end, and the less said about my own title challenge the better.

Well done Nathan - if you send me your details/choice by PM, I will arrange an Art of Football t-shirt your way (be honest, easier to just send you the money, if you'd rather...).

There will be some carping at the inclusion of Chelsea players, but you have to go down to about 9th to find a non-doping entrant, and I appreciate many of you will have been participating in other leagues where the prize money is more than some schmutter.

Thank you to everyone who took part; alas, in the commentary style of Glenn Hoddle, you just needed to have more quality.

With Clive's blessing, we will be back next season, hopefully with one little star over the badge after this evening.

Double Signing!
at 16:22 5 Jul 2024

Morrison was pretty tidy at Wigan last season, although not always first choice while Kerr and Goode were fit. Played left CB in a four with Charlie Hughes (who we can't afford, alas) from what I remember, perhaps looked less at home in a 3, but vocal, whole-hearted and has a good forward pass in him. Good age too. Big tick from your Northern correspondent.

Book recommendation

Some great recommendations so far, what a well-read bunch we are, thank you!

May I plug a favourite of my own - Richard Powers' 'The Overstory' is just breath-taking, and although I don't always enjoy Pulitzer prize-winners (Oscar Wao, anyone?), this is an absolute gem.

Nine stories intersected and interwoven by trees, yes it is a bit preachy (I'm no tree-hugging hippy - don't let that put you off), it is beautifully written, will make you cry several times over, and heck, yes, look out Mildred, he's actually going to say it, 'it may change your life'.

Reminds me in some ways of my all time fave, 'Moby Dick' (in that you will, besides a cracking tale, learn rather too much about whales/trees in passing) - I have no higher praise, until Clive's first novel (don't tell me you haven't though about it).

It's a very good book, a little overshadowed by all the controversy.

I'm off now to castigate Dickens for writing 'a Tale of Two Cities' when he was neither French, nor a revolutionary, nor indeed lived through the French Revolution, but a TZ book club thread, there's an idea perhaps?

That's originally McKies' cover for the Pan edition of Brian Stableford's 'Promised Land'.

Devoured SF growing up and absolutely loved Stableford's Hooded Swan books in particular (so much so I recognised the artwork 40 years later...).

Sadly Stableford passed away just a few months ago. <end-geek>

New Pornographers - Mutiny, I Promised You. Might have gone with Sing Me Spanish Techno, but the video here is Kristen Schaal's Penelope, Princess of Pets and makes me laugh every viewing (despite having cost all of £2.30 to make)
