24 Hours in A&E - Preview
at 18:03 11 Mar 2025

You are right, Clive, when you say our downturn in fortunes has coincided with our attempts to play more 'expansive' football. But the real issue is our inability to score goals, which haunted us in our initial dismal run and has revisited us in recent weeks Derby aside, we haven't scored more than a goal a game in the past 6 and drawn a blank at Portsmouth Coventry and WBA. In our purple patch we were scoring 2 per game regularly. Our defence has not worsened in recent weeks but our potency has reverted back to Aug - Nov.

I'd settle for any player who could score ten bloody goals in a season whatever number he wears on his back

Appreciate this is an Alfie thread, but I haven't seen anything like enough of him to make a judgement. I haven't seen Kelman at all, but I would have thought he was worth another look, based on his current form, and our dire attacking situation. I think Smyth has won over a lot of fans this season, and I feel Kelman is a least worth a look before we cut him loose.

Ten-man Baggies latest to trap QPR in low block ball-ache – Report

My school's team recently won a game 5-1 and four of the goals came from dispossessing the oppo from their own goal kick. As for our goal kicks - Pulis would have been proud!

jeepers coins for leccy AND fruit machine - two memories from more innocent times. Were the black 'A & B' pay telephones a thing in Britain, or was that just our little curiosity on the Emerald Ilse?

Have to disagree with you about Johnstone. He is not good enough for the Celtic 1st team never mind the prem. Mind you, he does have trickery, which as we know is one thing Dunne cannot deal with. Always likes to cut inside for a shot like Chair does. Very predictable in that, but still manages to execute it successfully quite often as he did against us at HQ last season. Cook needs to be very vigilant, which post injury he hasn't been. I expect a 2 or 3-1 defeat.

Aims and goals - Preview
at 08:13 8 Mar 2025

Your title is also an apt microcosm of our season as a whole. When we were very crap at the beginning and a bit crap recently (results wise anyway),we haven't scored enough GOALS to win matches. The good bit in the middle we were scoring two - occasionally three- goals per game. We the exception of Derby we have stopped doing that again. One goal is rarely enough for us to win games - offhand I can only recall Plymouth away - so until be get back to scoring twice in a game, results will suffer. We are creating chances but our AIM needs to improve.

Also ironic that it is okay for us to loan out our players to improve them for ourselves (potentially Charlie Kelman for eg), but not to take in loan players to do the same thing.
Loan players are part and parcel of the modern game and as I said previously, all players are playing for the pay-cheque not the badge, so it really doesn't matter how long they are here for.

Blades' cutting edge too sharp for Rangers' toil and chug - Report
at 14:49 3 Mar 2025

Cheers Clive, well-balanced report. I also feel Nardi has been well found out now in terms of not being able to deal with any kind of cross. He is starting to cost us points now; Coventry and again on Sat Surely that is coachable? I know the old chestnut; if he was perfect he wouldn't be here, but that cross for the first goal was his all day long. He is an excellent stopper, but a lot of work needs to be done on crosses.

I can't comment on Morrison's fitness, but to me, Cook is still a long way from the player he was pre-injury. For me, he was our star man in the opening period of the season when everyone else (except Nardi) was basically shite. We didn't garner many points, but Cook contributed to the most of them. Burnley was the stand-out, but he was excellent /very good in every game. He is not near that level since his return.
That said, I wouldn't be inclined to bin him off this season, just because his form has dipped/ his age. We have had some stalwart CB's well into their 30's -Hill, Dunne/Neilson all spring to mind in the last decade or so and we can go right back to Frank McLintock in my time. I would give him another year, if nothing else to school Morrison during training and because he is 'the right sort' around the dressing room.
However, IF Morrison, is fully fit, I would certainly be giving him more time over the remaining games. As for Edwards (who was Beckenbaur's bastard son a couple of weeks ago), as long as we are paying him, keep playing him

Cheers Kensa. Obviously I knew it would not be anything like Prem money, but did think it would be higher than that. Below tenth it becomes quite miniscule, but I guess we should still aspire to that.

Is it not a thing that for each place we finish in the league we receive x amount of money? So the higher we finish the more money we make? So we play our strongest team to try to achieve our highest possible position. Irrelevant if the player is contracted for the next four years or three months.

Only because Hitler breached the non-aggression pact. Part of which saw them intending to secretly carve up Poland between them. Let's at least be factually correct here.

And breathe... - Simon Dorset's annual deep dive into the accounts

It's remarkable. I consider myself 'reasonably' intelligent, with a fairly decent education, but I can not make one jot of sense of this. Utterly utterly useless when it comes to figures. Am I right in saying we have just squeezed in under the permitted 39M deficit over the rolling 3 year period?

Transfer policy massively attack orientated at expense of defensive cover !!
at 22:37 26 Feb 2025

True enough, although there is Morrison. Also in the last window we brought in the Aberdeen lad and the lad from Chelsea who can (apparently) literally play anywhere when he is fit.
I agree there is also much more uncertainty about our defence, with Dunne/Paal/Cook out of contract and Edwards/Ashby on loan. Definitely should be our area of focus for the summer - plus the 20 goal striker of course.

We have had a lot of weak players, or worse still, good players who 'phoned it in' (LFW Glossary). But there is only one player who was a wa*ker before he joined us, a wa*ker while he was here and a wa*ker since he left (right up to the current time) and that is Barton.
