At last! We've won an away game!

On the way down we had a sneaking suspicion we might win today as our last away win outside Lancashire was away at a club whose name also began with AFC. And our only away win outside Lancs last year was at QPR! When you've been watching football as long as we have....

It has to be said Wimbledon were crap; crap in the Barnet sense, not in the poo-phoria sense of that early morning sensation when a particularly profitable trip has been made to the outhouse first thing.

Bennett came in for Cavanagh in midfield and made several good runs with the ball from deep forcing the Wombles onto the back foot. Rafferty played ok at Right back in a formation that offered little width, but enough guile to penetrate the opposition's defence repeatedly. We struck the bar early on through a Bobby free kick and overall their keeper was a clear MOM.

The first goal arrived when a good cross from Bobby saw Dele rise easily above Pimkins (their number 5) and plant a firm header into the goal in an old fashioned centre forward style.

And then came a passage of play which could have altered the outcome of the game had the officials got things right.

One of their players surged towards our box before being brought down clearly just inside the area. The erratic ginger lino in front of us immediately flagged for an offence but bizarrely didn't plant his flag across his chest to indicate the offence was inside the box meaning a penalty kick.

Soon the lino was surrounded by irate Wombles correctly insisting it was a penalty. The ref consulted the lino and turned round to award a free kick on the edge of the box. As he did so, he spotted a Wimbledon player lashing out at Bobby who fell to the ground though it was unclear if any contact had been made to be fair.

The ref immediately brandished a red card and Bobby received treatment on the side of the pitch in front of the Dale fans. This was all too much for one regular who launched into an uncontrollable rant against Bobby who twice turned round telling the fan to shut up. The rant was along the lines that Bobby shouldn't be going down in an attempt to get an opponent sent off. When said fan continued, Dale fans started telling him to shut it and one exasperated fan tapped him on the shoulder, before mimicking the "zip it" motion by dragging his fingers across his lips.

The ranting fan turned his attentions on this new target only to be pushed back quite softly, and ironically went down at the first attempt as though his legs were jelly before playing dead for two minutes. The Police came over and escorted the ranter out of the ground as it was clear he was so drunk that he was almost out of control - to the point he accused another fan of the "crime" insisting he be arrested! The innocent fan's only crime was to be wearing an equally hideous shirt of the real assailant!

And so, as Wimbledon were reduced to ten men, the away following was reduced to 227!

Amidst all this furore the free kick was taken by Pimkins and was easily saved by Lillis at the near post.

A few minutes later the ejected fan missed the target of his ire, Bobby, scoring a very well crafted goal with a shot from the edge of the box into the far corner.

At half time we were cruising at two nil and remarked amongst ourselves that we were getting fantastic value for money!!

Second half we hoped we could be professional and put the game to bed. By Christ we missed some chances and t5heir keeper made two outstanding saves in the space of a minute.

Typically, we allowed them to grab a goal which (like all we concede) was very preventable, but for the final ten minutes we held them at arms length very comfortably I thought. After the obligatory 4 minutes extra, the ref blew time, and the away monkey is hopefully off our backs!

My marks for what they are worth are:

Lillis 7 - not a great deal to do, but no heart stopping moments either.
Rafferty 7 - Didn't notice him much, but they didn't get any change out of us down their left.
McIntyre 6 - Up against a pacy right winger who caused him bother early on. Warmed to the task second half as you'd expect of a seasoned campaigner.
Edwards P 7 - Regulation centre half display.
Other centre half 6 - I haven't got a clue who it was, so cannot give more than a 6!
Tutte 7 - Industrious as ever, fluid on the ball.
Bennett 7 - As a defender he looked to have the makings of a promising offensive midfielder.
JK 6 - It might be me, but I don't think he's playing to his full potential at the moment.
Grant 8 - our MOM. Caused them problems all match.
Grimes 7 - Not bad, some neat link up play. Would like to see him be more alive in the box.
Adebola 7 - got a goal and put in as much of a shift as his aching old frame would allow.

And so we put the 3 points in the boot, got the compass out, and headed North dissecting the day's events. The passengers decided to play Motorway 'gilfing' on the way home, which given the number of nice looking ladies in transit, was renamed the M6 fix. I imagine the back seat passengers will be suffering from Ennis Elbow tomorrow morning.

And so we look to Rotherham with the prospect of away wins becoming like buses.

Thanks for the report.

The incident on the terrace sounds very bizzare but typical of a Dale awayday!

I've seen the goals on Sky earlier this evening and the way 'Bobby' took his goal was superb, it sounds like he was at the heart of all our attacking play today.

Stop stealing my lines I'd done the 227 in the match thread! Good summary though

The name Bobby has never been used so much in one article.

Could Bennett become our Yaya Toure?

Thought Bobby Grant was brilliant today, everything we lacked in a striker last year. Grimes threw a bit of a paddy when he came off but the Wimbledon players were looking to get someone sent off to even it out and it was a good decision - same with Tutte later on in the game but I would have gone with BBM rather than Crainey who looks like a waste of a wage

RE the sending off, that was a blatant red card, while the Wimbledon players were arguing with the ref/lino Bobby cleverly went over to the massive hole left inside the penalty area where the foul occurred and starting patching it up, having stamped on his foot twice Midson then punched him in the face. Not sure why the Dons fans were getting so het up about it, Midsons an idiot

All very exciting though as the dale fan then drops to the floor - looked like he was just having a fit rather than being hit though? Also in fairness to him the police only took him away to get medical attention - he came back midway through the 2nd half

I saw the 'incident' - guy was on the floor having a fit, after being grabbed by the throat. He was taken away by the police to be looked at by the medical staff, albeit rather reluctantly. Mustn't have been ejected because he was back second half.

As some of you may be aware I have a lot of time for Wimbledon fans and what they have achieved and indeed I have gone to a number of their games dating back to their reformation in 2002 (though none for a few years). In fact, it was rather odd for me to go there and cheer the opposition. Anyway, I have been looking at the Wimbledon messageboard and apparently we are the biggest bunch of snide cheats they have seen since the Ryman League. We also bribed the ref. They also think we are a very poor side - that bit I agree with up to a point, as we are pretty mediocre. On the train down from Vauxhall both us and the Wimbledon fan we met on the platform were adamant that it was an easy three points for the opposition.

For the main talking point I was standing in line with the 18-yard line so had a perfect view of what happened. My initial impression was that Midson took a blatant dive and I was fully expecting the ref to come back and book him. I was amazed that he gave them a free-kick but relieved it was not a penalty as I thought it was inside the box. Having seen the replay now (in slow-motion, having recorded it) I am convinced it was a dive and even if it was a foul it started outside the box, though Wimbledon fans say there is video from the main stand showing it was definitely a penalty, which I find hard to believe. I do not think our defender did anything to make Midson jump in the way he did. The contact between them was minimal and at body level. The divot in the box was from Midson's knee as he collapsed in the box and certainly not from a tackle as there wasn't one. The video seems so clearcut to me I am surprised there is any doubt.

Another poster mentioned that Midson was standing on Grant's toes to provoke him. I did not see that, but I did see the childish pushing and shoving before Midson put a clenched fist in Grant's face. Grant did make a meal of it (which I do not like to see), but even if he had stayed standing up it was a clear red card under curent rules. I have no idea why Wimbledon fans are getting so irate about that. It was a crucial and very winnable game for them and one of their best players and senior pros goes and gets himself sent off. If it had been the other way round I think we would have been giving Grimes, say, a lot of abuse. For example, I seem to remember Holt getting a lot of abuse for getting sent off at Wycombe in one of his last games for us.

They are also complaining about our second goal, saying that Kennedy(?) went through the back of their player to set up Grant. At the time, though it was difficult to be certain from where I was, I thought the Wimbledon player was just slow to react and Kennedy got there first. The highlights are a bit inconclusive but it is true that it could have been given as a foul on another day. In any case, they had plenty of time and enough players back to stop Grant from shooting. His celebration was understandable but rather stupid as it could easily have resulted in a booking and later a red card as they were obviously trying to provoke our players into reacting.

This brings me on to another point, which no-one else has mentioned, I think. I thought the only reason for Tutte being substituted in the second half for Craney, other than Coleman going mad, was to avoid him getting booked again (the first was a bizarre one for a unavoidable handball, I thought) and evening up the numbers. This made me wonder about the Grimes substitution in the first half - I thought it was because he had a slight injury but Coleman confirmed in his interview on Dale Player that it was actually because he had been booked for reacting when a Wimbledon player got right in his face for no reason slightly beforehand and hence it was clear the Wimbledon players were trying to wind up to get him sent off. Not a bad tactic as Grimes has a short fuse, but it does mean they were not the angels they are claiming to be. He added that that was the same reasoning behind the Tutte substitution. I am really struggling to think of any incidents (apart from Grant throwing himself to the ground) which could have made us the worst bunch of cheats they have seen in years. Did anyone else spot anything that could possibly be evidence of our deeply cynical approach to that game? Blatant time-wasting? Feigning injury (apart from Grant)? Nothing comes to my mind that even comes close to Orient at Spotland last season.

It is also a bit rich of them to be complaining about us when certainly in the first half a number of their players were throwing themselves to the ground to get free kicks, most notably to me anyway Midson in the 'penalty' incident. In the second half one of their players seemed to collapse in a heap somewhere near our penalty area with no-one near him - not sure what that was all about.

Picking up on the players' marks, which I do not normally bother with, I have to disagree with the Lillis comment. He flapped badly at the cross for the second goal which in the end left an easy finish for their player. He should either have caught it or punched it well clear but instead pushed the ball out to a Wimbledon player to lob back in. That goal put us under a lot of unnecessary pressure and was soon after the lucky break of the disallowed goal.

Overall, it was a better perfomance than last week, but still not great. Our passing was OK, our finishing was not good (though their keeper made some good saves) and we messed up a number of good positions in the second half in particular. We should not have been hanging on for dear life at the end against 10 men and if Antwi hadn't touched the ball on the line we would have drawn, which would have been ridiculous on the balance of play

Great post fermin, although I would say over the disallowed goal that it's impossible to say it would have meant a draw.

If Dons had reduced the arrears then, Coleman might not have taken Tutte off, one of Grant's shots might have gone in and my uncle might have been my aunt.

As regards the Wimbledon's fans comments, they are talking nonsense, although we would probably feel the same had the boot been on the other foot.

I suggest they simply read it in the paper. It says 2-1 to Rochdale in mine.
