5 Things About The West Ham Game 10:12 - Dec 27 with 1484 views | SaintNick | 1. I though our support was decent at times, but we haven't got that red wall effect where the Northam keeps going throughout the game, dare i say it we need a group of ultras who just keep singing. 2. I though West Ham's support was poor, both in terms of noise and the fact that they sang some silly songs taunting Saints, no need for that we are not their rivals. 3. The Bedford pub didn't open till 3pm and afterwards only had two beers on tap, a lager and Guiness, it's due to close on 4th January, I doubt that it will last that long, it was empty after the game, after going in there since the 1970's it was a sad sight to see. 4. Spirited performance, sadly i think it is going to be too little too late, Russell Martin left us nothing to build on in terms of results & points 5. Why the hell did we not play Big Les under Russell Martin, most teams have big tall powerful players, we had none if Big Les had been used by Martin we might have picked up a point or two extra, that might have given us a chance now

5 Things About The West Ham Game on 10:21 - Dec 27 with 1437 views | dirk_doone | 2. West Ham fans were the first this year who sang almost as much about their rivals as ours do: with songs about Millwall and, more surprisingly, Chelsea. When the Northam End sang, "You only sing when you're winning," the West Ham fans missed an opportunity: they could have sung back, "You never sing when you're winning." The last time they were here, their team were doing well and so they were in a much more buoyant mood and singing about a "European tour". In fact, two of them, singing that very song, while sharing a stolen electric scooter, asked me directions to St Mary's and I pointed them down a path which led straight into a wall. 5 Things About The West Ham Game on 13:20 - Dec 27 with 1219 views | PatfromPoole | Re Point 1. I accept this point has been debated to death. As some on here may know, I will and do sing pretty much all game. However most in the Northam are not bothered as:- 1. they will only sing for most of the game if they have away fans next to them to sing at 2. they are too pre-occupied with their phones, checking the scores of other games, probably for betting purposes; or just generally messaging people 3. the team keep losing I cling on to some hope that it will be better in there next season if we are winning more regularly and we can build up some momentum of noise.

Sing one up for me, Pat. Sing out loud and strong. I wish you good voice.

From my perspective in the Kingsland, the noise generated by the Northam has got better as the season has progressed. I think it will take time but the noise generated surpasses what came from The Northam before which died years ago anyway. The Itchen North may have been vocal at times but with only 750 or so tucked in a corner it had little impact..The biggest issue for me is different sections singing different songs but at least that dispels the notion that we don’t have enough singers to fill an end. I’ve always sensed that plenty wanted this to fail from day one for a variety of reasons. Ie they had no input into the decision, they want to be next to the away fans, too many muppets in the Northam etc etc. Nick there are no English grounds I’ve visited where singing is sustained. British crowds are largely reactive to the match. When attacking the Northam there is more noise generated by any section since being at SMS. With a failing team it’s been not bad, with a decent side to get behind I’m sure it would be much better. I’ve haven’t heard many fans sing ‘is this a library?’ etc this season which tells you something I think. I don’t think those in the Northam and Itchen previously appreciated how dire the atmosphere around the ground was and I can only imagine how bad it would’ve been this season.

Even in the Itchen, and i'm sure in other sections within English football, the total dedicated vocalists were usually few anyways - 20 at most in the top few rows (out of around 700). The mass are reactionary as you say. The key to getting a better atmosphere comes in these dedicated vocalists finding eachother; similar to "SaintsAwayBlocks" a few years ago, finding a designated section. The Northam is an impressive end, but it needs guidance. Sporadic support is limited support in such a large end. [Post edited 27 Dec 14:56]

5 Things About The West Ham Game on 15:17 - Dec 27 with 1018 views | BLEEDRED | From the Itchen it seems to me that the Norham is split into two, the old section, which seems to create the noise, and the new section which apart from a few rows at the back seem quite quiet with even some sitting down .

I agree. The new setup is a big improvement. The Northam End is very good now. It was embarrassing before, not having a proper home end. With the results we've had this season, the old setup would have been dire. You wouldn't have heard anything from our groups of fans stuck in the corners of the Northam , while the away fans would have been booming out from it as if they owned the place. Now, it's the away fans who are stuck in a corner, which is how it should be. I feel quite proud of our home support now. [Post edited 27 Dec 15:26]

5 Things About The West Ham Game on 15:42 - Dec 27 with 939 views | felly1 | The Northam is definitely better, louder and more vocal in it's support than previous seasons imo. Not perfect, clearly not for everyone for a variety of reasons but for me overall it's a big improvement and the atmosphere has improved and it even brings out the part time singers in the Itchen posh seats.

Baffling. Our support in terms of noise is the worst it has been in many a year, probably the worst since the days of Poortvliet and Wotte.

Maybe being in the Northam gives a different perspective. From where I sit I assure you it’s much better. When we in the PL 2 seasons ago was the worst I’ve known- at least with a full ground. Where were you before Pat? If it was the mighty Itchen arising, it didn’t sound so mighty where I am.

If there was something to sing about on the pitch it might help. The club should be thankful the supporters are still turning up and filling the ground after the shit we have had to watch this season. Get a few goals on the pitch and the crowd will be loud. Works both ways.

I still sit in the Itchen corner and the noise from the Northam is pretty good Pat tbh and it’s definitely improving imo. I sing my head off too always have done. I was singing to get Martin out at the spurs game and couldn’t believe there were many sat in silence. We are a reserved bunch at times .

I sit in the Kingsland closer to the Northam and it's definitely better. I hated the old away fans set up, sitting right in the middle of our singing fans, doing it large and taking over. Now they're penned away in a dark corner where they belong.
