Following on from Ageds Horror thread..Gangster films..
I know there are some classics out there ..The Godfather's, Long Good Friday. But Carlto's Way is my favourite Gangster film .Could be the music, probably the acting( Penn and Pacino are outstanding) but for me it blows Goodfellows out of the water..
Blimey! Only one mention of Casino so far!!? Make that two now. The scene at the end when Pesci is getting battered with baseball bats is quite frankly farking orrible!

Goodfellas for me over Godfather, which was great but should never have gone to a 3rd film - far too long & indulgant. Tarantino's rarely disappoints.
On this side of the pond, I love Lock, Stock & Snatch. Sexy Beast & Layer Cake are great. Long Good Friday for old school.
And as someone mentioned earlier, Love, Honour & Obey is brilliant. slated by many critics and some might think there's a little too much humour. but I love it.

1. Sexy Beast 2. The Inside Man. (More a heist flick but whatever)

not a gangster film, but a legendary gangster scene not mentioned thus far.
imho by two of the finest actors in my lifetime.
in my top 5 off all time 'dead man shoes'. where a returning soldier comes back to avenge the death of his mentally ill brother by local gangsters in some shitty wolverhampton council estate.
brutal. by the same geezer who done 'this is england' shane meadows
head boy , gary stretch's bottle , def goes a bit here.

Spackman'd disco, I chucked up True Romance earlier on.
But bringing that scene up deserves a mention. Tarantino is a bit of a knob but he gets some great performances out of actors.
Another worthy of mention is Millers Crossing, I think that is a Cohen brothers effort.

Great shout on Dead man shoes. debatable if its a gangster film but the reality of gangsters are a lot like the characters in this film. Basically bully's. Paddy Considine is immense.
Occasional providers of half decent House music.

Disco, that's a great scene but Hopper is the worst actor in everything else. He's the white Samuel L Jackson.

True Romance is a brilliant film ,way up there on my list of all time, all genre films. That scene with Hopper and Walken is legendary. There's so many great scenes in that film. Gandolfini beating the crap out of the lovely Patricia Arquette. Elliot getting nicked with the Charles all over his face. And who can forget Gary Oldman as wigger pimp Drexl Grab yaself an egg roll. We got everything here from a diddle lie joe to a damned if I know.
True Romance is a love story, I wouldn't call it a gangster film, although there are gangsters in it. Similar to Leon, in that there are gangsters but it's about a hitman and the relationship with Matilda (the girl).
The best gangster films are definitely the cliched and obvious ones, but they are still the best...
Goodfellas The Godfather Casino Donnie Brasco Long Good Friday Carlitos Way Scarface American Gangster Gangster No 1
One that I don't think has been mentioned, which I love, is Road to Perdition. Great film.

I dunno man. For me he gets free points for being intense by chewing the scenery. Same as SLJ. Shouting isn't acting.
But yeah that scene in True Romance is fab. Only topped by the Drexl scene. Gary Oldman is a bad motherf*cker in that scene.
