PRISON OVERCROWDING on 13:14 - Sep 4 with 1142 viewsCapt_Koons

It's about time we looked at more imaginative ways to punish criminals. Monday- friday and weekend prisoners is one solution used a lot on the continent for lesser crimes.
But cramming in ever more more prisoners and keeping then locked up for 23 hours a day does little to prevent further crime upon release.

Seems sensible. Lets start with threatening them with a season ticket at FP. That would certainly put me off a life of crime anyway...

use the tag more, especially when its for drunken violent crimes, ie fights in town on a saturday night. Give them a 7-7 curfew. For minor frauds then make them pay the money back plus compensation and serious amount of community service.

The biggest problem for prison and what people including the courts dont take into account as is not so much the time you're there but the impact it has on the rest of your life when you get out and your family whilst you're in there. For the serial criminal they dont care but for the normal bloke that makes a mistake it can destroy you.

Sadly a lot of the prisons are so Victorian and the regimes and culture so out of touch that there is limited support that the people who want it can get.

A complete overhaul in the prison service/culture is just around the corner.

I know people who've been in and out for burglary to feed their drug addiction and prison does absolutely nothing to rehabilitate them. There must be a better way in these situations. Maybe some form of national service.

The only certain lessons learnt from nearly 250 years of state prisons is that they don't really do much in the way of stopping crime or rehabilitating criminals.
They've been used, and still are, as society's dustbins. They give the general public respite for a few years or months from particular baddies but not much else.
