I use windows security essentials

I also have malwarebytes (useful if your computers been infected)

http://www.malwarebytes.org/

And I find advanced system care good for de cluttering and speeding my computer up

I've found it to be a little clunky and slow. Horses and courses spring to mind

I use Norton Anti-virus ["anti-everything," I forget exactly what it's called] on my p.c. It conflicts with my iMac programs.

I've used Norton for a very long time and am completely sold on it. There's an annual subscription fee, which I'm glad to pay for the protection.

You will need to update the protection from time to time, but the program notifies when your protection is out of date. I do it on a regular basis anyway.

I don't care. I'm old. I don't have to.

Check these three sites out. They have regular tests of anti-virus software, testing for protection, performance, usability, false positives etc.
Both free and commercial anti-virus software included:

AV-Comparatives - Independent Tests of Anti-Virus Software http://www.av-comparatives.org

AV-TEST - The Independent IT-Security Institute http://www.av-test.org/en/tests/home-user

Virus Bulletin [you have to pay to read the full reviews on this site] http://www.virusbtn.com

Some of the most popular free versions are the ones mentioned in this review of free anti-virus software, made just 4 days ago:

Like many other anti-virus companies AVG, makes both free and more advanced commercial editions.
Looks like you have downloaded "AVG Internet Security 2013" which is a trial of some of their commercial software.
Only download the "AVG AntiVirus FREE 2013" edition unless you want to pay after a trial period.

I've always found those to be slow and clunky

Microsoft security essentials is a breath of fresh air in that sense, and free to boot

AVG is a good one — I have it on my home PC. It scores near to or better, than the top paid ones (like Norton), in most tests I’ve seen

The AVG AV is free as far as I know — maybe you downloaded the security suite?

I know the square root of f**k all about any of this and have always used McAfee which is a nightmare for speed and conflict, but I'm scared to let go of it like nurse and worse. Are the free ones secure enough if you use internet payments/banking etc?

I've used the free version of Avast for almost 2 years and haven't had a problem with it.

I used the free ones in work for a few years with no bother. Haven't had my bank account hacked many times either
