Agreed. Footballer are particularly prone self dillusion. For example Lallana quote " we could have scored more goals" so why didn't they?

In the mens game... until the national sides interests become, once again, the priority over clubs interests, England will continue to flounder.
They have not got the best players available, nor the best manager or coaches.
Games are scheduled to fit in with PL clubs, instead of the other way round. Players are withdrawn, or pull out for the flimsiest reasons, with no repurcussions.
The FA could help here, stop arranging meaningless international friendlies in the season, and arrange as many qualifying games in the close season as possible.
And stop this snobbery when selecting a manager, in the past we have missed out on some very good managers because their profile did not fit in with the FA.

The womens game is simple..it's all to do with sex discrimination!
On the part of women themselves !!!!!
Why have a women manager???? ..no one has explained that fully.
The woman in charge maybe the best women available, but with all the good will in the world she is horrendously biased to certain players, poor tatically, and hopelessly behind the times.
We even had, the normally diplomatic Trevor Brooking attacking her live on TV in the halftime period v Russia for leaving out 2 players who were our best players, to include her own favourites who had failed for sometime.
HOPE.. fecking Bob Hope could have done a better job.

We need only look at Scotland and how their Premier league and the introduction of foreign players into it turned Scotland from a nation with some truly world class players up until the early 90's into the footballing backwater it is now (sorry pat).

I think the reasons are

1. Influx of foreign players doesn't allow enough English talent to develop, even now we are seeing that at Saints where we are paying £12 million for Wanyama rather than allowing JWP to develop further, his game time will now be severely restricted, Jack Cork as well.

2. Players culture, look at how the likes of Terry & Cole view playing for England, to them its just another cash cow with no real passion for them.

3. Im not sure that the number of friendlies is the real reason, Brazil for instance seem to play far more and always have yet have a far better record, again its the attitude of players towards those friendlies, Ashley Cole for instance will pull out of friendlies knowing that for the big games he will be back, perhaps a code of ethics would change things, ie pull out of a midweek England game and the England doctor will examine you and assess when you can play for your club again, that would stop the shirkers etc
