Of that list, Hughes has only really played 2 - Hill and Buzsaky, who have featured in virtually every games, so I would expect them to stay, even if they are only back-ups.
I'd question the future of Young and Traore too, as they seem to be out of favour and must be on huge money, plus Smith, Kenny and anyone who is still under contract and not in the 25.

I disagree entirely, Hill is well worth another year.
Playing wise next season Hill would be a back up, but he has proven over the last 2 months he can be relied upon. He's stood up against the best Arsenal, Spurs and Man City have to offer and done us proud.
Also though is the intangible factors. Having a great pro with Hill's attitude and leadership in the squad will easily offset the value of his wages for another year.
If we release him we'll have to sign a replacement backup defender, who will be an unknown, unproven quantity who needs to integrate to the squad. | | | |

Hill has proven that he is capable of playing at this level; grnated he isn't the quickest but makes up for it with timing, effort and concentration.
Of the others only Buz has really played any role under Hughes & that has tended to be due to others being injured or suspended so I expect he'll be shown the door. MH will want more athletic replacements and I expect to see fresh blood.
Ramage is a fair CCL CB and no doubt a few others will get a gig somewhere but none are of suitable quality to stay with us and they've all done OK out of it.

Ferdinand needs a Hill-like player beside him – albeit one with more speed and skill plus the ability and confidence to captain a defence that Hill has. I think that looking at Diakite and Taiwo will give you an idea of the type of player we should expect to be coming into the squad over the summer and therefore if you run a finger over that potential exit list, I think only Hill will be kept on as recognition of the large part he played in bringing some well needed steel to our back four during the run in.
Ageymang might have fit the bill physically, but unfortunately his one shortcoming will have been outed by now by the new regime......he isn't a footballer. | |

This thread replicates a debate we had in the car on the way up. From the list, only Hill as a definite.
Buzsaky, possibly. But only as a squad player, with wages and contract length to reflect that.
More controversially, I'd offer either Hall or Gabbidon a 1 year extension, on Championship level wages. First one to accept gets a deal, the other gets shown the way out.
In both the latter cases, my idea reflects the need for a squad - without bringing in another 5 or 6 new faces.
I thought smith, derry and helguson were also out of contract and, if so, I'm not convinced we should offer new deals to any of the 3. | |

I am surprised people are giving Cerny so little credit. He came in a did a good job when Paddy was injured. He is a really good #2 goalie and I don't see us picking up any better unless we are willing to pay big bucks for a back-up.
Obviously, I would keep Hill around for another year or two. He was player of the year for me and no reason why he couldn't do a job for us next year.
I would think about keeping Buzz and be very tempted but in the end I would hope to pick up a replacement in the summer. He had his moments this season but, in the end, they were too few and far between. | |
