Luke Young 23:53 - Feb 5 with 1020 viewsdonny11

Anyone else think he has some technical issues when defending one on one? At fault for some the recent goals (Best, Nogbia and Jarvis). Although has done a very decent job thus far.

You could be critical and say he should and could have done better to stop Matt Jarvis from scoring on Saturday, but it was a lovely finish and Jarvis' skill made it difficult for him to defend against that close. You can't just dive in there without being absolutely sure, so he played a game of percentages by staying on his feet and lost the dual.

He has generally played well overall, but otherwise, he has been involved in a lot of goals we've conceded over the course of the season. He's lost his man once or twice or simply doesn't do enough to stop crosses going into the box. But that is a problem we've had generally and the wide men are often doing exactly the same and not providing enough protection.

Still, I like him as a player and think he's had a good season despite those problems.

He has had some very good performance earlier on in the season but recently has been a bit of a liability with all those goals conceded listed. Must do better in future.

As I said yesterday.

It's being so happy that keeps me going.

Young was not the only one at fault for that goal. When there's a player coming into the box in that fasion shaping to to make a shot it requires one if not two of the other players to come accross to block the angles for the shot.

this didn't happen and there was a gap to Young's left that Jarvis was able to shoot through that should have been covered by another defender.

Also Kenny's positioning was wrong as there was only a 2 yard opening for Jarvis to get a clean shot on Target, and it's Kenny's job in that situation to make sure he has that covered.

All round it was a poor goal to concede.

There are a lot of little things we can pick at, but I thought the main problem (after Barton conceded possession) was that we allowed the ball to travel all the way across the box to Jarvis, and really, once he picked it up in that position on the front foot we were always going to struggle to deal with it.

Jarvis' finish was very technically astute, I'm not sure if we had enough time to cover properly and at that range, it's hard for the keeper to cover the distance and if the player puts it right in the corner like he did, then there's no chance. He also shot at exactly the opportune moment, when Kenny planted his feet and just between Luke Young and I think Nedum Onuoha.

Maybe Young could have gambled and tried to engage as soon as the ball came across the box, but I can understand why he played percentages and tried to delay and hold him up, but really, it was just a fine goal in the end and hats off to the boy.

For me he's been caught out of position one too many times, although on Saturday he did have hamstring problems, so can't really blame him for his performance.

Have a look at the goals we've conceded over the last 8 games.

It's being so happy that keeps me going.

he's lost pace which means he tends he tends to back off more than he should, + dip in form in the last 6 weeks

I noted Young's inability to defend in the official match thread, and was called ridiculous.

He, like many other defenders, have cost us goals. Poor positionally, and was hoping that we get Samba so Nedhum can move to RB.

He should be showing him outside though as Onouha did later in the game. The angle would then have given Kenny more chance to save a shot and if Jarvis had still of scored then you can have no arguments. Solid player though and hope he's not out for too long.

^^this

You teach 8 year olds to defend by putting the attacker on his "wrong" foot, Young wasn't close enough and was square on - that's really easy for someone of Jarvis's quality to wrong foot

I suppose we're finding out why Hutton was getting in ahead of Young !! Be difficult to beat !!!

I've found a team sheet for the weekend - anyone interested ?
