No. 10 08:27 - Mar 10 with 1698 viewsstevec

Perhaps we could have retired the no 10 shirt when Stan passed.

Not just the shirt, but at this club, any mention of the number other than in a historical context.

Rodney was a no 10, Stan was a no 10, Stainrod was a no 10 and last but not least Gallen was a no 10.

I’m struggling to think of anything since that was truly a no 10. You make goals and you score goals as a no 10, the modern breed have literally no understanding of the role.

Just bin it and stop insulting me with the clown infestation that masquerades in that supposed position season after season. We don’t have half a dozen number fckin tens, we have none.

Bizarrely my memory of Stainrod is that he actually operated more like a number 9.

Never knowingly right.

Had me thinking but I always saw Allen as the number 9

I think the shirt should stay to give players aspirations, these great players have worn this shirt now go on and make a name for yourself.

It's not as if Stan or Rodney are going to be forgotten if other people wear the number 10

Couple of glaring omissions in between your last two I think there Steve in John Byrne and Roy Wegerle.

Although played more as a 'fashionable' inverted wide left man, I've always thought of Taarabt as a no 10.

Oh calm down dear.

Er yeah surely Taarabt is in that number 10 bracket, maybe Buzsacky as well?

Best person we've had at number 10 was Harold Wilson.

My legs were much better 30 years ago but I'd still like to keep them.

For me during my time watching the Hoops in the flesh, it will always be Adel

With Buzz and Eze runners up

Of course prior to that there were better, but as someone who watched the R's in the flesh from the 90's (apart from Wembley appearances) they were the best for me.

Roy Wegerle
John Byrne
Adel Taraabt
Ebere Eze

All pretty worthy tens in the lineage of Marsh, Bowles and possibly more mercurial, game-changing players than Gallen in the ten role (as much as I love him).

And I reckon Chair will be viewed in the future as also a great QPR ten, not his fault it's in a fairly rubbish team. He's not playing behind Clive Allen - or anyone really - but is still responsible for the most assists this season despite being injured for half of it.

There'll be more great QPR number tens. More worried there won't be any great QPR number 9s in the lineage of Givens, Allen, Bannister, Ferdinand, Furlong, Austin...

Currie Byrne wegerle?

A tradition to be proud of, not one to be ‘binned’.

Stupid thread.

There's a clutch of number 10s at the club. It's the number 9 shirt that has felt retired for some years now.

Absolutely, I’ve certainly missed a few.

I guess it’s the notion of what a no 10 is. Back in the day it was more easily definable but in the context of todays football it’s blurred at best and of all the ones I mentioned plus the ones you and others have pointed out, what constitutes a 10 no longer exists.

The idea that Madsen was brought in to emulate any of those is laughable, even if he was any good he would be nothing like any of them. That goes for everyone since Gallen, including Eze, who was never a 10. More an 8 in the Gerry Francis mould.

In short, 10 is extinct, it ceases to be.

I detest the American method of retiring shirt numbers everytime an iconic player in it retires, meaning no-one else will ever get the chance to take up the mantle and give the number a continuation in its history.

Akos was a great #10, so was Eze. Taarabt was but he didn't wear it for his best with QPR.

Chair is fine enough, not as good as some before him but much better than others.

Tjaronn Chery was semi-decent for his time in it to be fair.

But I love the fact the #10 is something that can be passed down from player to player, same as how other clubs have similar (Man U with #7, Newcastle #9 etc...)

Is the 10 extinct? I don't think so. I've seen all our 10s from Marsh onwards and although they had their differences they certainly had their similarities too. For me, a 10 plays off the central striker, is clever on the ball, scores goals and creates opportunities for others.

Totally agree, but that doesn’t fit with the system we seem to be determined to deploy.

I'd settle for any player who could score ten bloody goals in a season whatever number he wears on his back

Frey will get ten this season I reckon.
