Sheffield United Reflection 18:02 - Mar 1 with 7382 viewsbluenwhite10

Poor 1st goal to concede as the ball into the box had no real pace on and 2 defenders did not deal with or neither did the keeper come out and claim it. Morgan although a wonderful talent looked off it and I would say after 30mins he needed to be replaced by Saito with Chair going more central, that change was done but in my opinion too late. The second goal should have been dealt by Edwards earlier but it was a quality finish by Campbell. I thought we gave it a good go but just fell short, but United where a very good side packed with lots of quality attacking players and a 10 million player on the bench (Cannon) and let’s not forget Moore too.

So fallen just short I suppose against a team like that with us in the bottom half of budgets in the championship is I guess no reason to be to disheartened.

Cook looks a little off it maybe Morrison needs to come in.

One player i thought was outstanding Varanne.

No complaints today and gave it go against possibly the best side I have seen at HQ this season.

Final word officials very poor today the linesman in the 1st half missed a couple of offsides and in the second half balls going out of player and the referee was generally poor too. Lots of tough games ahead in the coming weeks so a call for patience with this young squad.

Because Varane doesn't go forward we are easy to defend against.
In all teams your 6 should be the most creative as all attacks will start with him. He wins the ball and moves it on, but quickly. Varane doesn't do this.

Both Varane and Field are massive problems because their passing and vision is p!ss poor. They create NOTHING. How many assists have the pair got?

1 ASSIST ALL SEASON BETWEEN THEM !!!! From our central midfield pairing. Jesus, that is dog shyte.
Some can moan about missed chances, referees, poor defending etc but that is the biggest problem in this team. To easy to defend against.

And for those saying Varane has potential, he is 24 in September, he better start improving soon so we can flog him.

We're missing a deep-lying Faurlinesque playmaker like the deserts miss the rain, for sure. Varane is the answer to the wrong question.

In that case, I thought it was disappointing that Fox came on at the end.
Nothing against Fox but is he still going to be here next season?

Playing the loan players (and some others) isn’t winning us games or getting us to safety currently.

Neither is changing the system that was working to something to justify those players.

We only started turning the season around when we played 433 instead of whatever it was before that. Now we’ve seemingly gone back to the system we had when we struggled because we need to accommodate players and/or because that’s the system we have been told to play - maybe because we are now ‘safe.’

So what’s the benefit in playing loan players ahead of our own if:

1) we don’t win
2) we think we don’t need to win - see 1)
3) we didn’t need to change system to accommodate new players

I’m a simple guy - just don’t get why you pissball about with players and systems that don’t need to change if you are doing well.

It wasn’t that long ago we had a pretty good winning run.

Those possessed by devils, try and keep them under control a bit, can't you ?

Yeah I'll be honest while I'm never happy with a loss, that performance, against that team, is something we should hold out heads up about. And I'd far rather not get the rub of the green now than when it really makes a difference

Yeah as I say , I agree with a lot of what you say and will agree to disagree with the rest .

Didn’t see much point in bringing Fox on (he did ok) when we need Morrison to play really . We were losing anyway so we might as well have put Morrison on.
Can’t be having that he’s not quite ready . Been on the bench for weeks .

On January 1st we had to sign centre back cover with Cook and Morrison injured.
As I keep saying , you will probably find we have clause with Southampton to play Edwards .
Right or wrong I’ll bet that’s why (and that he’s clearly a very good player) .

Yang is a slightly strange one admittedly .
I think he should be behind Smyth for now . I think Smyth has earned that right .
But we dint know if Smyth is carrying something or struggling with a niggle. He pulled up sharp against Coventry holding his knee and went down on his haunches 2 or 3 times after that.
He may have a problem .
I do think the Korean shirt etc in the club shop is maybe slightly over the top .he’s a kid .

But you are slightly ignoring the point Clive made that , loan signings / out of contract in the summer players ….amount to the same thing . Not here after May.
You can’t leave them all out. So the argument , although makes some sense , is pretty much pointless .
It’s not like we have a team full of loans either .
2 players at this level won’t make a huge amount of difference across a season, but I agree that changing our formation to accommodate them is a valid argument

Team of players currently available and definitely here next season currently looks something like...

Nardi
Manufor Morrison Lehy Friel/Esquerdinha
Varane Morgan
Smyth Madsen Chair
Lloyd

Pick that if you want, but you better hope 44 points is enough to keep you up because that loses the last 11 games straight.

Is anyone suggesting we stop playing all the players whose current contracts finish this summer?
I would expect a few of them will re-sign anyhow, and we have no reasonable alternatives to play instead of Dunne, Paal and Frey.
The loan players are a different matter though, especially Edwards who is keeping Morrison out.

I would suggest given their profiles it's Cook keeping Morrison out, which makes this a valid argument.

Edwards is in the team because he can step out of the left side of the defence, beat the first press and pass the ball forwards to a team mate. The only other one who does that is JCS and he's injured. Morrison is the Cook replacement, so as the season winds down it's a very valid discussion about which one of those should be playing.

I think given we brought Fox on from the bench yesterday it's pretty clear Morrison isn't fit anyway atm.

(I wouldn't be picking Yang either btw, I didn't understand the signing when we made it)

I think Fox came on because we moved to a back three and he is a left footer in that left of three, with Saito playing LWB.

This might be bad news, I don't know, but Friel is a right back.

Why are the loan players who won't be here next year different to out of contract players who won't be here next year?

Without going into detail.....I thought we competed pretty well yesterday against one of the top sides in division. We were in the game throughout the 90 minutes - some pretty decent player performances out there against some decent players. We had our chances.

I am not overly disappointed with the defeat.

The referee and officials were very average from my viewpoint.

Do you know which of the out of contract players won’t be here next season yet? I don’t as the club have not announced it.
I do know Edwards won’t be here next season as Southampton are all but relegated and he will surely be a regular for them in the Championship next season.

I can't comment on Morrison's fitness, but to me, Cook is still a long way from the player he was pre-injury. For me, he was our star man in the opening period of the season when everyone else (except Nardi) was basically shite. We didn't garner many points, but Cook contributed to the most of them. Burnley was the stand-out, but he was excellent /very good in every game. He is not near that level since his return.
That said, I wouldn't be inclined to bin him off this season, just because his form has dipped/ his age. We have had some stalwart CB's well into their 30's -Hill, Dunne/Neilson all spring to mind in the last decade or so and we can go right back to Frank McLintock in my time. I would give him another year, if nothing else to school Morrison during training and because he is 'the right sort' around the dressing room.
However, IF Morrison, is fully fit, I would certainly be giving him more time over the remaining games. As for Edwards (who was Beckenbaur's bastard son a couple of weeks ago), as long as we are paying him, keep playing him

It's this season! Still 11 games to play. Can still be relegated if we go on the run we started the season with, or more unlikely we could still reach the play-offs. And apparently we earn a bit more money the higher up the table we finish. Fox made a goal saving tackle at the death there too. Mid - May is the time to time to start prioritizing next season, not early March.

Yep, Friel is a right back. 18yo and been spotted in photos on Twitter training with the first team.

Can't help but think teams are targeting Nardi more seeing as he's unwilling to come off his line for the ball.

I must admit I didn't really notice it earlier in the season, but it's definitely a bit of an issue now.

Hope he can work on and improve that part of his game (it's not as if he's a small or unimposing guy - probably got the widest shoulders I can remember seeing on a keeper!).

This is a fair point and where we need some kind of Faurlin equivalent.

Don't forget Vale (wherever he might play).

Re Madsen I really don't understand why he's not been sent out on loan. If he's not playing for us he might as well be getting minutes/experience in L1 or L2.
