Absolutely bizarre scenes in the Oval Office today, staggering.
Trump and his VP clearly had a plan to ambush him, but to do it so publicly was bad form.

It was an ambush, it was bullying, but I think we’re missing the point here.

Zelensky is a proud man, the Ukrainians are a proud and brave people, you cannot fault their resolve in all of this but, as Trump says, they cannot win without US support and for too long now European countries attitude to defending themselves has been absolutely shameful.

Truth is, Britain is the only Western European place that is, albeit reluctantly, finally showing a minor commitment to increase its GDP spend on defence. France are showing some willing but history says that won’t amount to much, Italy just laugh in your face and Spain reluctant to play any part. The Germans have lost the will to commit to anything.

Trump knows, as soon as he commits to being a backstop, Western Europe and indeed Starmers fine words on increasing defence will once again be just that, words, and they’ll collectively go back to doing nothing and relying on the Americans. This has to change.

The West has become weak, it will capitulate to anything. Sadly, we need someone to bang our heads together. That time has come.

Have to be careful what you say these days, but a strong US in some form of power pact with other super powers may be the only way to preserve the lifestyle in Western Europe for our grandchildren that my generation has taken for granted.

I think Starmer is playing a blinder. We have to keep the orange buffoon onside for as long as possible. Our nuclear defences and Air Force is almost totally dependent on American supplies and support. We have to take what we can off them in the short term whilst arming ourselves to the teeth as quickly as possible.

The French and Germans know this too and with the Poles, Scandinavians and Dutch on board we have a strong backbone that should be able to resist anything Putin throws at us. Interesting to see how that traitorous little weasel Farage comes out of this. He's trump's number one little glove puppet and by extension, Putin's
too. A right little Quisling is Nigel.

In WW2 Moselyites like him were locked up.

Watched it ‘as live’. It seems to be winding up and then Trump said ‘one last question’. Vance piled in and it all went pear shaped. Vance is the real danger man here. While Trump just riffs away and can almost be led to the right answer (Starmer did this rather well, actually) Vance has an agenda and it isn’t pretty. Moreover, he is still relatively young. He could be on the political scene for decades. That is truly frightening. Europe needs to get its act together really fast. US isolationism in the 1920’s and 1930’s enable the rise of the militaristic dictatorship in Japan and the fascists in Europe which led to WW2. Now it is Trump and Vance who seem to want WW3. I

B*llocks. Some things are more important than football. This is a topic that needs to be discussed.

As people have said on here it was a total set up for the benefit of the Russian state.

They allowed some one from Russian state media in on the dressing down. Then when it was pointed out that they probably shouldn't be there, there was a quick statement that says 'oh yeah we have removed this person.'
I mean, I imagine the security levels for these events are pretty tight. But somehow some one from Russian state media was present?

It all stinks and I fear for what is to come in the future.

Trump may think he is behaving in a way that makes America strong and that they will benefit from it but actually they will get nothing from this in the end. Ukraine aren't going to suddenly defer and say, yeah you're right let's get a peace deal and hand over the entire country to Putin. Makes me sick how they are trying to twist this around and make out that Zelensky is being unreasonable because he's had his country invaded.

Yeah but Loft For Words is more than a footy forum (sorry Clive) ... music, films, holiday advice, other sports?.... However, the vast majority of threads are are still football related.

Only 6 weeks ago some people said that the world would be a safer place with Trump in the White House.I wonder if those people have changed their minds yet?
This is what happens when you put a businessman in the world’s most powerful position.Everything is about how can he can make for himself and the US,and everything is up for sale to the highest bidder.
Would he even contemplate doing any deals with Ukraine if they didn’t have anything they could trade with him?
The next 4 years could quite easily see China take over Taiwan, unless Taipei sells its soul to Trump for support.
I wonder if Mexico could take a cheeky bid to take back Texas?

Ukranian minerals are only a part of it, renaming the Gulf of Mexico to bypass a bill forbidding offshore drilling, wanting Canadian resources that the US rely on so much by annexing them and the threat towards Greenland for the natural resources contained there all smack of an attempt on holding the world to ransom for these resources in the future.
Without trying to drop into the realms of fantasy; why is Trump closing down so many agencies with reasonably competent and experienced heads and replacing them with wrestling promoters and influencers? Why is Musk the recipient of all these new government subsidies and contracts for Skylink, SpaceX and Tesla? We are seeing unprecedented flouting of the constitution and EO's written contrary to due legal process.
Could these be the actions of a Russian asset?

The grass is always greener.

Allow me to repeat myself: there are too many egos and idiots in positions of power. Indulge me further: ignoramuses, too.

JD Vance is getting away lightly here, he encompases all three traits, and as was evident, doesn't know what he's talking about!

When I see Musk and Vance, part of me always feels Trump is being played by smarter people than him. Allow me to repeat myself again: Trump is one thing, and the religious right that will follow him is far more scarier. I see JDV as being every bit as dangerous as I do Musk.

Europe really needs to get its act together. We have more power than we know, but I'm not confident we have a person(s) who can truly harness us it. Either way, it was a very good day for Russia and China, and at least two people involved in the childush spat are too stupid to realise this!

Yep, I get the points you make and things may develop in the way you describe but it's too early to tell.

I don't think Starmer is able to play good cop to the EUs bad cop if that's what he's trying to do. Regardless of what he's attempting, he'll be forced to pick a side sooner or later.

At home Starmer is yet again on the wrong side of public opinion. Even most MS media side with Zelenskyy.

It was like watching Pompey QPR again…beaten by the direct, physical approach where little to no skill or finesse is required.

All you need to do with Trump is follow the money….

Just wait until you see how much Vladdie the Baddie invests in Trump Coin once he gets what he wants from Ukraine. $20BN is the latest number doing the rounds.

As for Starmer, the guy’s well out of his depth and will get stitched right up before long.

Those possessed by devils, try and keep them under control a bit, can't you ?

Starmer has come out after what happened yesterday and and has backed Zelensky. You might not like Starmer but he's doing what any decent British PM would do whether Tory or Labour, and that's doing what is best for this country. Unfortunately we are dependent on USA both economically and militarily. Macron is playing the same game too. Germany can afford to sit it out a bit as they are in between Chancellors but good to see that Merz looks like a realist here and has recognised that the transatlantic alliance is ending.

Big Euro Conference opens in next few days. All the European leaders, including Starmer will be backing Ukraine and attacking Putin. Putin is not as strong as it is often made out. Their economy is stuttering and probably couldn't cope with another year of this. Hundreds of billions of pounds of their assets are frozen in Europe. We could seize them and use them to help rearm Zelensky and ourselves.

To paraphrase a post I saw the other day: people engaging in this level of corruption cannot, and do not, relinquish power willingly. We are in for some very scary times, I fear.

Russia hasn’t been ‘red’ (or commie) for over 20-30 years.

Putin and Trump are different ends of the same stick. Both in it for themselves under the pretence of being for the good of their country. They are both exploiting and pillaging their own land and people as well as anything else they can grab. That’s why Trump likes Putin, except that I think Putin is more canny than Trump and will get the better of him one day (though hopefully not).

As well as my other observations earlier in the thread, there was a moment when Zelenskyy was saying Vance was talking loud, which he was, and Trump jumped in and said he wasn’t being loud and started to tell him off like a child. This is how he operates.

It almost feels like the US and Russia will start to align and Europe will be stuck in the middle. We just have to hang on for four years until Trump leaves. He can’t get voted in again can he?

The grotesque thing around this is that it had to be done in front of the cameras and we all know why. Just get on with those sorts of conversations in private; you are governing countries FFS not embarking on reality TV shows.

Sometimes a little dictatorial leadership keeping the public in the dark is utterly warranted...

Too may idiots out there in the "general public"...

Can we go out yet?

It should have been private but in a way I’m glad it wasn’t as Trump, Vance, Graham etc have shown who they really are, if it wasn’t clear already. Will be interesting if there are any moderate Republicans who may feel differently now.

It will be interesting what support and backing Starmer gives Zelensky today. Hopefully they give Trump and Vance a bloody nose in terms of unity. And we can fight Russia without America. Most of the damage caused to Russian forces is coming from very low technology in Europe. America, because of what they are now, will always sell Europe weapons.

Never knowingly right.

Trump telling Zelensky off for wanting to reply but said hadn't been given the opportunity. Trump berated Zelensky very loudly by way of response.

I hope all Americans will be ashamed but I think they are generally OK with this behaviour and attitudes by their leaders.

It was frightening on many levels, but was just plain and simple bog standard school playground bullying !!
