Perhaps they were Q cars.
The police always had fleet of unmarked, covert, undercover vehicles. Taxis, delivery vans even I'm told, a milk float.
I imagine the same situation obtains today.

I got nicked by one of the Q cars.
At my trial the judge asked if there was anything I wished to say before he sentenced me.
I muttered ā€œf*ck allā€
The judge cupped his hand to his ear and said to my brief ā€œdid your client say something?ā€
My brief replied ā€œ my client said f*ck all, my lordā€
The judge said ā€œoh, I'm sorry, I thought I heard him say somethingā€

I nicked a milk float once. Luckily the only police vehicle in the vicinity was a Q milk float.

The excellent documentary ā€˜Secret history of our streetsā€™ describes how life was back then very well. They made 6 programmes about different parts of London, hereā€™s the one about Portland Road W11.

I watched all of these a couple of years ago. Really interesting programmes. The one about Seven Sisters Road I thought was particularly good. Worth watching for anyone interested in London history

Think you might mean Caledonian Road. I enjoyed that one too and the one about Revery Road in Deptford.

Another programme just popped up on my YouTube feed, BBC ā€˜40 minutesā€™ all about Cardross Street in Hammersmith.

Ah man I used to love the 40 Minutes documentaries - always had quirky and interesting subjects.

Back when the BBC made worthwhile stuff

A few years back the Mrs and myself were strolling down the Southbank and decided to pop into the BFI and look int the media tech section where you can watch various films/ tv series.

We searched for West London and this was one of the listings so we settled on that and watched the whole thing. It was quite something to see the streets we walk now back in the not so distant past. Although this is more my wifeā€™s manor (born and bred in The Bush me, rarely crossed over to W10 until I met herself) it was fascinating to see Wood Lane, Darnley Terrace, Ladbroke Grove back then.

I couldnā€™t say if it was better then as I wasnā€™t alive but Iā€™m happy I donā€™t live in the slums they did then but hanker after the lack of cars and loads of pubs.

All things considered though, Iā€™m quite happy with now.

"All things considered though, Iā€™m quite happy with now."

Your alter ego, who posts after midnight and mainly at weekends, doesn't always sound happy with now
