That's Sad 20:40 - Jan 14 with 3530 views | Boston | ....the passing of Tony Slattery. Not really my type of comedian, but ok. He was a quick witted kid, used some of the local pubs, knew a few blokes I palled around with, before the fame etc. [Post edited 14 Jan 20:41]

That's Sad on 20:43 - Jan 14 with 3136 views | MrSheen | Someone told me he went to Gunnersbury School. Is that right? Very sad. Overflowing with wit and talent but that couldn’t protect him. He had the world at his feet.

That's Sad on 21:12 - Jan 14 with 2992 views | danehoop | Saw him a few times on the stand up circuit in London just as he was starting out and very clearly talented even then. As you say Boston, so quick with with come backs I am sure he did the Comedy Store impro nights a few times as well when I saw him. Had some terrible demons that haunted him, but cant detract from his being one of the more influential comedians of the time. RIP Tony.

That's Sad on 21:16 - Jan 14 with 2968 views | daveB | Was one of those comedians I never got on tv but saw him a few times at the Comedy Store and he was brilliant and pretty sure he was in a play with Ade Edmonson that I went to see called Nevilles Island which was really good Really Sad news
That's Sad on 21:26 - Jan 14 with 2913 views | Logman | Really sad news. Liked him on Whose Line is It Anyway ? with others like Paul Merton and Greg Proops making a name for themselves.
That's Sad on 22:24 - Jan 14 with 2687 views | numptydumpty | Yes he was out of the limelight for decades. Struggled with alcohol and his mental health. BiPolar diagnosis. Very sharp wit accompanied by a massive vulnerability but it has been reported he was finally enjoying his life, when life had been a consistent struggle for him. Saw a few interviews he has done over the years. RIP Tony.

That's Sad on 22:28 - Jan 14 with 2668 views | Noelmc | Revealing article from 6 years ago which explains the highs and lows in his life. I'm glad he made it past 60 and was doing better in the last few years but 65 is still far too young to go. Thanks for highlighting Cider. RIP Tony.
That's Sad on 22:31 - Jan 14 with 2642 views | Lblock | I hope he’s gone upstairs to the pearly gates and Mr Harman and Mr Lee have gone downstairs to a much hotter eternity Reasons with held for civility He’s not a comedian I really got but he was a mover in comedy royalty circles of that time. RIP to him

That's Sad on 22:31 - Jan 14 with 2639 views | bosh67 | Sadly a comic genius who's demons had demons. He was horribly dogged by the black dog of mania for decades but was at his core one of the funniest people we've produced in comedy over here for many a year. His illnesses took so much of what he had to offer and could have offered away but he was, when he was well and on top of his game, a comedy genius. RIP.

That's Sad on 22:37 - Jan 14 with 2608 views | Lblock | Is Rob Numan still with us? It’s odd because a lot of people say those two were like kindred spirits but I found Rob brilliant but Tony much less so. Crazy how so many comedy geniuses have these really dark places they slip into

That's Sad on 22:54 - Jan 14 with 2560 views | FredManRave | Yeah, I remember Tony Slattery form my yoof, especially whose line is it anyway and whilst I don't know what happenend to him after the height of his fame , it sounds like it was mainly downhill from there, to the extent that 63 is absolutely no age. RIP. P.S. Do what makes you happy, as long as it's not to the detriment of others.

That's Sad on 08:33 - Jan 15 with 2023 views | westberksr | very sad news; one of the generation of comedians I grew up watching as C4 led the way in comedy programming. seemed to have got control of his demons; so pleased that he was in a better place, but very sad other than that.
That's Sad on 08:39 - Jan 15 with 2006 views | wombat | think its still on Tv but he recently did a series or two of travelling around the uk in a motor home , very funny and some of the old tony is still around ,

That's Sad on 08:58 - Jan 15 with 1943 views | BklynRanger | That's a great article - quite moving to read it for the first time today. I met him in 1996/7 - I don't think it gives anything away at this point to say I was a junior staff member admitting him to a clinic. Only had a few brief interactions with him, but in all of them he was a lovely bloke, very quiet and unassuming, especially considering his fame at the time. Really sorry to hear of the pain he went through in later years. RIP Tony.
That's Sad on 09:24 - Jan 15 with 1849 views | Bluce_Ree | He was meant to be doing a live show in a few months in a town near me and I was considering getting tickets. Small venue though so I guess his star had waned a lot. He was always good on WLIIA. Certainly enjoyed him more than posh John Sessions.

That's Sad on 14:27 - Jan 15 with 1362 views | numptydumpty | I think it's easier to be amazingly creative or have ingenious thoughts when you are struggling because your own brain can be incredibly complex. And some ways of thinking, if you look at it from a different angle, can be amusing or funny in the way decisions or ideas pan out. I used to contribute to a mental health charities newsletter, many moons ago, and when I read back some of the articles I wrote then, these thoughts would simply be impossible for me to produce now, being on the straight and narrow for many years now. Yes and supporting a football club such as ourselves can almost mimic a bipolar experience. Sometimes we are sailing proudly up above cloud nine, and almost as suddenly we can dip into the depths of darkness. A simplified example but sure you get the drift. Yes and Tony Slattery you could see was almost teetering on an all too frequent ledge. A very clever man who was way too critical of himself.. [Post edited 15 Jan 14:28]
