The worst UK city for growth? 04:18 - Dec 1 with 2626 viewsAnotherJohn

MSN is featuring a story, recycled from September, about PWC's survey of the best and worst UK cities that I’d missed before. I looked down the best cities list expecting Swansea to be in the top 10, but to my horror we feature as number 1 on the worst cities list.

https://www.msn.com/en-gb/money/other/the-20-best-and-worst-cities-to-live-in-th

https://www.pwc.co.uk/government-public-sector/good-growth/assets/pdf/good-growt (full report)

The exercise is based on an index developed for PWC’s Framework for Growth research, and our problems seem to include the winding down of traditional industries, the need for city regeneration, serious economic disparities, and lack of affordable housing. Apart from the major impact of the blast furnace closure at Port Talbot, I don’t really recognise the picture, but perhaps I have been misled by the refurbishment of important city buildings and our geographical advantages. Are we really the worst UK city for growth? Apologies if this is old news for some.

I believe it. For many families money is very very tight as industry is changing and better paid jobs are disappearing. Possibly some should bare this in mind when criticising supporters for not attending games. Imo the biggest drop off in attendees is families, these are the hardest hit with the drop off of well paid jobs in the area.

The decline in Industry in the area has gone on for over 40 years with no replacement coming in to replace it.
More recently Swansea Council and more specifically the planning department as to take the blame for some of it.
How many millions have been wasted on driving Alco-tourism. Plans fir cafe culture boulevard and such nonsense thar resulted in Wind street being the main tourist attraction.
Short term, weekend accommodation is the only hotels in the area. Where are the holiday parks for families around the Gower? Tenby has plenty and is then full of tourists all summer.
Swansea planning block any attempts to provide family facilities in Swansea.

Having great beaches seems an irrelevance

Personally I feel our beaches are no longer great, the continual sand dredging has left the beaches stoney and not great for walking into the sea. The fantastic beaches of my youth are no longer there and you will find far better around the UK.

The drop in family leisure time, such as football will also explain low attendances.

A great believer in taking anything you like to wherever you want to.

Haven’t been back to Gower for five years now
Used to swim in Fall Bay
Lovely memories
We have 15 miles of shoreline but not the best for swimming although it’s far cleaner these days. Our issue is mud at low tide and sandbanks
I used to do the charity Police river swim which was horrific really .

North Wales beaches are better for swimming

The WAG has the powers to do something about the lack of growth, but as usual has little creativity or appetite to do anything different.
10% of Income Tax rates is controlled by the WAG.
Why not declare Port Talbot and the surrounding area an "Area for Economic Growth" or some such name. Then offer any company setting up Head Quarters with at least 10% of UK staff based in the area, a 7.5% reduction in Income Tax for employees paying income tax in Wales.

The family section of the South stand was pretty sparse yesterday which backs this up, the club were advertising ‘Kids for a quid’ for the Sunderland game I believe, which should improve this.

It should be kids for a quid every game

Swansea Indepenent Poster Of The Year 2021. Dr P / Mart66 / Roathie / Parlay / E20/ Duffle was 2nd, but he is deluded and thinks in his little twisted brain that he won. Poor sod. We let him win this year, as he has cried for a whole year. His 14 usernames, bless his cotton socks.

Agreed. Sky pay £9M a season to the club, more than the total gate revenue. Let kids in free with a paying adult, they are the future.

Yes, heavily discounting the kids is a good idea from many perspectives.

The last two home matches have been a great advertisement for free flowing attacking football. Yet after a 7 goal thriller our attendance fell by 2000. Makes you wonder if public of Swansea actually want a football team.

I stood on the North Bank in 1973 when we played Northampton, the attendance was 1,300.
The average home attendance for the 1974/75 season was a shade over 2000.
Those figures are what you call disappointing…innit.

Ancient history
I’ve been there in the dark days too Rig.
Another world now
We don’t belong in the lower escherlons
We never did

People should be welcomed if they want to return not labelled in a derogatory fashion

We could do with a few games where we see us crush shite teams like Cardiff and Pompey and do the basics against the likes of Leeds .

Anyway,we’re off topic

Seems Swansea is seen in a different light to you

You’ve seen it at its best though, like me .
We were lucky to be born when we were
Growing up in the fifties and sixties in Swansea was terrific .
I never thought I’d live anywhere else
Warts n all, I still feel chemically attached the the place and the sporting clubs whixh we loved

I hated Glamorgan leaving and the All Whites morphing into a mixed team with Neath ,of all places.

Talking about rugby…. There should be two regions . East and West Wales

Let's look at some facts.

To get to Swansea you currently have to drive 40mph across the bridge

From Magor to Tredgar Park you have a 50 mph zone, which you will be very lucky to hit.

Then from Port Talbot to Swansea, once again you are down to 50 mph.

Once in Wales, you have a ridiculous 20 mph speed limit.

& those in power then decide to put a tourism tax on top for those people who decide to come to Wales.

Anyone who thinks investment is coming to South Wales with the current transport issues is a deluded fool.

Is that the ridiculous 20mph limit that is saving lives in Wales?

Yes i think lives are quite important.

Its probably why most large English cities are also 20 mph.

& how about growth for Swansea & South Wales in general regarding all the other points, or are you harping back to the 20 mph thing again?

If the Westmonster govt had not stolen HS2 money from Wales then we might have better transportation links. Just a thought …..
