We left the EU on the 2st February 2020.
The AZ vaccine was first used in December 2020 10 months after we left the EU. That is why the UK was far ahead of the EU in rolling out the vaccine.
If you remember the EU even threatened to withhold the pzizer vaccine ordered as the UK was not in EU until it was pointed put they would be in breach of the UK EU withdrawal agreement. [Post edited 3 Dec 2024 21:37]

Contro has been told more than once that the problem with AZ was that it was a viral vector vaccine and therefore harder to adapt to deal with previously unknown variants of the SARS-Cov-2 virus as it mutated, whereas this was easier with the mRNA vaccines. The NYT article just echoes what the links I already posted said. The issue of adaptability is different from the issue of clinical effectiveness against the variants of the virus that affected many countries in early 2020; at that stage AZ worked well and was affordable and more widely distributed globally than its rivals.
